Predicting the 53 man roster

QBs (3): Chad Henne, Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen

.

The Dolphins open the season with the most depth of any team at their quarterback position. All three starters have seen significant time in the NFL. There is no way Pat White was making this team with Henne, Pennington and Thigpen at quarterback.

.

RBs (5): Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs, Lex Hilliard, Lousaka Polite

.

Miami has one of the best running back tandems in the NFL. Cobbs is the change of pace running back and Sparano’s favorite player. Polite is the powerful lead blocker and first down machine, while Hilliard is a nice insurance running back and core special teams player. This is by far my favorite position for this team.

.

WRs (5): Brandon Marshall, Brian Hartline, Davone Bess, Marlon Moore, Roberto Wallace

.

The top three at this position have remained the same throughout training camp and preseason. It was the bottom half that became wide open when Greg Camarillo was traded to the Minnesota Vikings. The trade opened the doors for both Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace who have taken the opportunity and ran with it. Both players have outplayed Patrick Turner and have earned a spot on this team.

.

Tight End (2): Anthony Fasano, David Martin

.

I have a hard time believing Miami will stay with only two tight ends on the roster, but for right now, I think it is the best decision. Fasano and Martin are a real nice tandem at tight end and I expect a season similar to the one they had in ’08. Miami will more than likely place Nalbone on the practice squad and look for a backup tight end else where.

.

Offensive Line (8): Jake Long, Vernon Carey, Richie Incognito, Joe Berger, John Jerry, Lyndon Murtha, Donald Thomas, Corey Proctor

.

I had a real hard time deciding who would make the team along the offensive line, but in the end, I had to go with what I have said all along. I believe Miami will cut Jake Grove, who is injury prone and too costly to have in an uncapped year. This is the year to let go of a big contract without ramifications.

.

With that said, Berger automatically becomes the starter at center, Procter makes the team and serves as a swing lineman, and Thomas becomes your back up guard. You have your bookend tackles in Long and Carey, who are the stars of the offensive line, and Murtha stays for now as insurance.

.

I believe Miami will be in the market for an experienced backup offensive tackle, so Murtha’s time with the team may not be long.

.

Defensive Line (8): Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Kendall Langford, Jared Odrick, Marques Douglas, Charles Grant, Tony McDaniel, Ryan Baker

.

Randy Starks, Paul Soliai, Kendall Langford, Jared Odrick are all locked to make the team. The additions of Marques Douglas and Charles Grant have solidified this unit and have proven to be blessings in disguise. McDaniel and Baker have improved and are quality backups that deserve a spot on this roster.

.

Outside Linebacker (5): Cameron Wake, Koa Misi, Charlie Anderson, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Quentin Moses

.

The Dolphins have Canadian sensation Cameron Wake and rookie Koa Misi manning the two outside linebacker spots. Charlie Anderson, a more than capable backup and special teams player, has proven he is a quality backup and remains with the team. Converted defensive lineman Ikaika Alama-Francis has been a pleasant surprise and has been Misi’s backup all through training camp and preseason. IAF has even seen time with the starters as a run stop specialist. Moses is my surprise here, I know he was injured, but I am impressed with what I have seen from him this pre season and I am seeing him apply solid pressure.

.

Inside Linebacker (4): Karlos Dansby, Channing Crowder, Tim Dobbins, Micah Johnson

.

The biggest surprise to the inside linebacker unit has to be overachiever Micah Johnson, who was signed as UDFA after being cut by the Giants when Miami lost linebacker A.J. Edds to a season ending injury. No one expected Johnson to make any contributions to the team, but the injury to Crowder opened the door and I believe Johnson has demonstrated, with his play, the ability to make the final squad.

.

Cornerback (6): Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Will Allen, Benny Sapp, Nate Ness, Nolan Carroll

.

The Trifecta has kept five corners on the roster these last two year’s, but after Will Allen suffered a set back to his injured knee, Miami was forced to keep six corner backs. I had to go with Nate Ness instead of Jason Allen, Ness has really come on strong and is a very good special teamer. Ness is sure tackler, with real good recovery speed and an ability to knock the ball away. He is also a lot cheaper than Jason Allen and in his young career has shown more. Remember Ness is a converted safety/cornerback so he also adds depth. I don’t know if the Dolphins will keep six corners the whole year, but for now Nate Ness has made the Miami Dolphins 53 man roster.

.

Safety (4): Yeremiah Bell, Chris Clemons, Tyrone Culver, Reshad Jones

.

An encouraging sign for the Dolphins is how consistent they have remained at the safety position since day one, especially after last year’s debacle. They have entrusted Clemons with the free safety position and Pro Bowl safety Yeremiah Bell is expected be used as a key weapon on the defense. Culver is a key contributor and quality special team player for the Dolphins and rookie Reshad Jones has enough potential to remain with the squad and also be a key special teamer.

.

Specialists (3): Dan Carpenter, Brandon Fields, John Denney

.

The Three Amigos, as I like to call them, have turned into one of the most consistent units on this team. Their play earned them all contract extensions during the offseason and there was no way this unit was being separated.

.

Released: Pat White, Rolly Lumballa, Patrick Turner, Julius Priutt, John Nalbone, Ander Gardner, Jake Grove, Andrew Hartline, Ray Feinga, Lionel Dotson, Montavious Stanley, Erik Walden, Chris McCoy, Austin Spitler, J.D. Folsom, Jason Allen, Ross Weaver, Kevin Hobbs, and Jonathan Amaya.

DOLPHINS END PRESEASON WITH LOSS

Cowboys 27 Dolphins 25

The Dolphins preseason finally came to an end. Though the Dolphins lost to the Cowboys 27-25, the Dolphins won't care about that score come tomorrow. All eyes are now pointed at the Buffalo Bills next Sunday, when the games actually matter.

Head coach Tony Sparano decided to play his starters this week against the Cowboys and they lasted three series, but only managed three points. The running game did improve and quarterback Chad Henne did redeem himself a bit after last week's horrible performance, but things were not as crisp as most would have hoped. The biggest concern the team has though is that on the final play that the starters were in on, Jake Long went down with a left knee injury. No initial word on the severity of the injury.

No real need to disect this game, since we can all turn our attention to next week, when the regular season officially kicks off. The preseason is history, bring on the Bills.

Nate Garner Out For Year PDF Print E-mail

GARNER PLACED ON IR

Nate Garner

The depth along the offensive line took a big blow on Tuesday, as the Dolphins placed backup tackle/guard Nate Garner on Injured Reserve ending his season. Garner started eight games for the team in 2009 as he filled in at various spots along the line for injured starters.

Garner's versatility along the line will be greatly missed this season. While the Dolphins do have adequate depth at the center and guard positions, the team is very thin at the tackle position. Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long and right tackle Vernon Carey are the starters, but the team's main two backups, Andrew Gardner and Lydon Murtha have struggled during training camp and the preseason games. It is likely the team will add a new backup tackle to the roster this weekend after the mandatory league wide cut down to a 53 man roster. Stay tuned.

Dolphins Waive Tight End Joey Haynos PDF Print E-mail

TEAM CUTS ROSTER DOWN TO 75

Joey Haynos

With the Dolphins needing to trim the roster by one player for the mandatory NFL cut down to 75 players, the team placed third string tight end Joey Haynos on the waived/injured list today. The move is not shocking, since it was widely believed Haynos suffered a serious foot injury in Friday's 16-6 preseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

While nothing has been officially reported on the severity of the of the injury, it was believed it will cost Haynos the entire 2010 season. Haynos signed with the Dolphins on September 24, 2008 and played the past two seasons with the team in a reserve role. During his tenure in Miami, he accounted for 21 receptions for 184 yards and 3 touchdowns.

With Haynos now gone, the Dolphins currently have three tight ends on the roster with Anthony Fasano, David Martin and John Nalbone. The Dolphins are expected to only keep two tight ends on the 53 man roster, and it is possible Nalbone will spend the season again on the practice squad.

DOLPHINS STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO FALCONS

Dolphins Vs Falcons

The Dolphins first team offense shined against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, but stalled against the Atlanta Falcons tonight. Chad Henne had a tough night going only 10 of 22, for 123 yards and an interception. Not only did the passing game not perform, but the running game was completely nonexistent as the Dolphins running backs combined for 20 yards on 15 carries. In fact, the teams top two leading rushers were Marlon Moore and Chad Pennington.

The defense was a different story. The secondary did still give up a few big plays and 3rd downs still seem to be a problem, but overall, the unit played well. Vontae Davis played very well tonight as he defended a few passes and forced a fumble.

While the Dolphins did not play real well, it is still not the end of the world. The offense looked bad this week, but they were on fire last week against Jacksonville, so it just goes to show it is hard to get a fair judgement of a team based on a preseason game. Also, keep this in mind, the AFC Champion Indianapolis Colts gave up 59 points to the Green Bay Packers last night. You want your team to play well in the preseason, but one game does not tell the story for the entire upcoming season.

The most important part of a preseason game is trying to escape without any injuries. Sadly for the Dolphins tonight, that did not happen. Receiver Brian Hartline, Center Jake Grove and Tight End Joey Haynos all left the game with injuries. Out of the three, Haynos' injury appears to be the most serious. While nothing is official, it would appear Haynos' season came to an end tonight.

Dolphins Young Defense Sprinkled With Just the Right Veterans PDF Print E-mail
Written by Roberto Yanes

                 ROBERTO'S FIN FRIDAYS
.

Take a look at the Miami Dolphins’ defense and the first word that will come to your mind is youth. In this year’s draft, the Dolphins drafted defensive end Jared Odrick and outside linebacker Koa Misi, both rookies, who are expected to start at their positions. Also scheduled to start are cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, safety Chris Clemons and outside linebacker Cameron Wake,  all who are in their second year in the NFL. The young defense is the reason fans and pundits are worried that the Dolphins will struggle defensively this year, but what they fail to see is the amount of veterans there are to help the Dolphins young defensive players.

.

The Miami Dolphins have done an excellent job of building a young talented defense for the future while sprinkling in a little veteran spice. The Dolphins have been very smart with the veterans they have added to the unit and the ones they have kept. These are players who are experienced, crafty, smart veterans that have played for good defenses, contributed in big games and have helped their past teams reach the Super Bowl.

.

The Trifecta wasted no time in signing free agent linebacker Karlos Dansby when free agency began. At the time, the move was considered to be the biggest move of the offseason, but after the Dolphins traded for Brandon Marshall, the signing of Dansby has gone under the radar. Fans and pundits have forgotten Dansby is one of the premier inside linebackers in the NFL, has played in a Super Bowl, and last year won his ex team, the Cardinals, a playoff game in the final play of the game. With only two years since playing in the Super Bowl, Dansby’s playmaking ability and veteran presence should do wonders for the Dolphins young defensive unit.

.

Dansby is not the only veteran linebacker the Dolphins added this offseason. Who can forget about Tim Dobbins, who was acquired on draft day via trade? Dobbins is a young veteran linebacker with a ton of upside and a core special teams player. Just one of the many veterans Miami has added to its young defense.

.

After the Dolphins lost defensive end Phillip Merling in the offseason, they dialed up the numbers of two veteran defensive linemen and offered them contracts, which both signed. The signing of Marques Douglas and Charles Grant has proven to be two key additions and a blessing in disguise. Both players have flashed in preseason and shown why they have been so good for so long in this league.  Douglas played for the best defense in NFL last year and Grant helped his team reach the Super Bowl. Grant has moved up the depth chart and has been the Dolphins best pass rushing defensive end in preseason. Douglas has received rave reviews from Coach Sparano for his wits, veteran leadership and play on the field. Neither player is expected to start or be a progress stopper for the younger players, but both have made enough of an impact to remain backups and contribute plenty with the way Miami rotates its defensive linemen.

.

The Fins continue to add veterans to sure up their defense and add depth. On Wednesday, the Dolphins traded fan favorite wide receiver Greg Camarillo to the Vikings for cornerback Benny Sapp. Sapp played for a Viking’s defense that was ranked sixth best in the league last year. He is a nickel/slot corner, who is a sure tackler, special teams’ ace and plays with mean streak. He is expected to fill in for the injured, Will Allen, until he returns and adds much needed experience and depth to a very young secondary.

.

After all is said and done the Dolphins have added five defensive players who helped their respective teams reach the post season last year. Dansby, Douglas, Dobbins, and Sapp all played in the playoffs last year, with Douglas and Sapp both playing in the AFC and NFC Championship games. Grant played for the Super Bowl Champions New Orleans Saints, and would have played in the post season and Super Bowl if not for a season ending injury. The five add experience, veteran leadership and know what it takes to help their team reach the post season and Super Bowl. Combine these new additions with all the experienced veterans the Dolphins already have, and what seems like a very young unit all of a sudden has the potential to become a real solid defense.
