The New York Knicks broke camp at the College of Charleston this week with more questions than answers; none bigger than the obvious: Can this team really be worth $195 million?

That's the combined bill — for the new coach Larry Brown ($10 million), the players (about $125 million) and the estimated luxury tax penalty (about $60 million) — that Madison Square Garden Chairman James L. Dolan will dole out for a team that won't contend for an NBA championship this season and might not make the playoffs.

payroll means nothing to the Knicks. This isn't black and white like the other 27 or whatever teams. The Knicks charge "PREMIUM PRICES" for courtside seats. The luxery tax means nothnig to them. Paying Larry what they pay him means nothing to them. They can have a large payroll because they will make it up 10-fold in ticket prices. As long as the team is competitive. Of course they aren't a championship team, but they are a playoff caliber team (a 5-8 seed range) and that is enough to jusitfy that payroll now.

You can't talk about the Knicks the way you talk about the Heat, Bobcats, Rockets, Suns, Bulls, Portland, Sonics...etc. They run their organization on a different business structure. Because of the arena they play in the city they play in..etc, they can't just blow it up for a year or two and take their lumps and play for the #1 pick. They can't. So, they must overpay for medicore players to be competitive at this point in time. It sounds crazy, but its how they (the knicks) are a profitable team and make boatloads of money year after year.

If Curry is yhealthy and can play this team is a plyoff team w/ a great coach like LB, they won't click off the bat but they will be midseason and they should be a playoff team.

The Knicks will find a way to suck, they over pay for everyone they get and have no concept of how to manage their money. Certainly their talent is no where near what they're valued at. They had a relatively good offseason in my opinion, but i dont know if they can put it together. I think Isaiah Thomas is over rated as a team president, and i doubt Larry Brown is healthy enough to take that slop the Knicks were last year and make them a team that can advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs.......

Granted, but they still have to contend with a cap. And they make trades awfully hard for themselves because they're stuck with a bunch of albatross contracts.

The Knicks could have paid me 200k a year to be the GM and I would have done 10X the job. I just laugh at every move they make, how does Dolan sign off on this crap.. Jerome James 5 years 28 million are you kidding me.. Not cutting Houston in the Allan Houston rule comes about... I think Isiah is sabotaging the Knicks to help out the Pistons.

The situation the Knicks are in is laughable. Why pay 195 million for a crappy team when you can do just as well for 100 or less? They havent been a good team for years, theyve gotten crazy giving every halfway decent freeagent a ton of money. Isiah is just completely clueless. I dont understand how giving Jerome James 28 million helps you to win or sell tickets.

The Knicks arent a profitable team and have ruined their chance to be because of mismanagement. 10 years ago they thought along these lines and started shelling out the money. They dont make "10-fold" revenue in ticket prices, they pull in 70 mil a year from ticket sales. The majority of their revenue comes from liscencing and tv deals like every other nba team. Even though they are the most profitable nba team they will lose money this year.

You have zero clue as to what you are talking about. Seriously. They will NEVER lose money. MSG Network alone makes sure of that. Throw in those courtside seats for the celeb's and everything else that playing in Manhattan and that team is farting through silk and whipping their asssssssssssss with 20's!

I wouldn't give you a $1.95 for them:lol: The Knicks are not going anywhere with Larry Brown...not with Isiah running things.

Forbs has a list of ticket receipts and total revenue for each sports franchise. Its not that difficult to figure out. But believe whatever you wish to.

I'm not a Knick fan but as bad as the Knicks have been recently the Celts have pretty much been like that for 15 years.

Celtics > Knicks

Plus, at least we're building a very solid foundation with cheap young talent (Jefferson, Perkins, West, Allen, Gomes, Green, Reed)

The Knicks are just a disaster..

For most of their existence the Celts have been better than the Knicks but for most of the past 15 years the Knicks have been better tha the Celts and I think the Knicks could end up being better this year but safe to say barring disastrous injuries neither will be anywhere near the Nets in the Atlantic.

UGH, I hate the Nets.

That said, give us a couple more years to develop our young guys. We're not gonna contend for any title this year that's for sure. But I love watching this young Celtics team.

So much potential..
