Um, why? Were the Pirates really in on Pierre? I find that hard to believe.

i agree, i relaly like pateron, but Pierre gives them instantly one of the best leadoff hitters. He should set the talbe now for ramirez and lee. I like the trade for the cubs, now they can trade patterson, maybe to the yankees? or id personally liek him to trade him to my sox if Damon leaves(whcih i hope he doesn't) I am also sorta suprised he didnt get maybe traded for FLA, now Florida has no CF.

Take it from a Cubs fan. Patterson has been given more than enough chances.

Damn I am pissed the Cubs pulled this trade off, I wanted Pierre on the Yankees. With his speed we could have had a certified leadoff hitter who manufactured runs with his legs. This threw a damper on my morning, I thought the Cubs had settled on Milton Bradley and Pierre would fall into the Yankees lap!

Patterson's certainly been given his share of chances, but I don't like how they rushed him to the bigs like they did. I don't think he ever quite recovered from that. This could be another Jose Guillen situation where he starts hot in his career, falls off the radar and re-emerges in a few years as a big time player.

Maybe the Yankees should look into Patterson for Centerfield. It's been 2 years since his ACL injury and if he can't cut it batting in a line-up with Jeter, Giambi, A-Rod, Sheffield, and Matsui, then he probably won't cut it anywhere. At this point, with what's on the market, I'd take my chances with him!

That's certainly not the worst idea I've heard for the Yanks. The Cubs probably wouldn't demand much in trade.

Patterson is my favorite player, & it's tough to watch him at times. He starts off every season on fire then fades as the season goes. He carried the Cubs the first half of 03 before his ACL injury, which doesn't affect him. The one thing his game really lacks is plate discipline. He has the power, speed, & glove to be great. He's one of the fastest players in the majors that hasn't received the best coaching. But we haven't given up on Patterson just yet because we still don't have a RF or LF, though rumor has it Milton Bradley or Aubrey Huff will be a Cub soon. Patterson needs to play the second half of winter ball to please the Cubs front office. It would be stupid to give up on him after one bad year.

Whoa, a bit off there. Stokes is not a second baseman in any way. He's a first baseman and is not major-league ready because of wrist injuries. Kris Harvey was drafted in 2005 and didn't make it out of A-ball. Tyler is not a closer nor will he ever be; Travis Bowyer is the closer of the two. Probably an innocent mistake. Look for the Marlins to grab Aaron Miles from the Rockies to play 2B, although I'd like to see them offer some of their pitching to Cincy for Ryan Freel. Joey Gathright is also a good candidate for center field next season. The Fish might try to trade some of their now-ridiculous amount of pitching depth on the farm for MLB-ready position players, like Gathright, maybe Jody Gerut from Pittsburgh, Miles, names like that.

As far as the rotation goes, the Marlins want to bring Moehler back and possibly Valdez. Willis is the #1, of course. After that, it's all about spring training. Vargas and Johnson will probably win spots. Then the final two go to someone from Moehler, Olsen, Anibal Sanchez, and Petit.

The pen will be Resop, Messenger, Bowyer, and whoever else. Bowyer will close. Nate Bump could be back (ugh). Ben Howard is a possibility. Who knows, far too much still to happen this offseason to project.

so we pretty much traded for nothing but pitchers..i guess they dont mind having a triple a team playing next yr b/c thats all this team is..they couldnt trade for a decent catcher?

wanted a young catcher, and had the D'Backs not backed out of the Lo Duca trade, we would've gotten a great young catcher.

I personally like the kid we drafted from Utah (moved up to AA quickly), but he is not ready yet.

As RWhitney said we will probably trade some of our many pitching prospects. (Or be the first team in history to use a 10 man rotation)

1.Reason I said Stokes is I get him and Wilson mixed up. I know both Wilson and Andino are going into ST as 2nd basemen.

2.Sanchez is probably the best pitching prospect we got, but he is not ready for the majors. Mitre will more than likely make the team (either as middle relief or a starter), and Petit is also ready for the majors.

3.I know we're trying to get Miles, Gathwright, and either Kearns or Pena from the Reds (Willingham is moving to Catching full-time, and Gerardi wants one more corner outfielder.)

4.Yeah I got Bowyer and Tyler mixed up.

This is what I don't understand. Unless I'm missing someone, EVERY single prospect of any value that Florida has picked up is a pitcher. I mean, I know young pitching is a valuable currency and all, but this is insane. There are 8 other positions on the diamond and 20 on the active roster to worry about!

Hey I guess the old saying is true: "You can never have enough pitching"

Also maybe FL feels that its easier to trade pitching prospects for good position players. I don't see anything wrong with having a lot of pitching prospects but I agree that they probably should have asked for a few more position players.

Technically Hermida, Jacobs, and HanRam are still prospects, but they will be starters. (Willingham as well, but he's got no real position)

Then you've got guys like Stokes and Wilson who were once considered great prospects, but have not made any progress since 03. Eric Reed and Reggie Abercrombie are solid OF prospects, but I highly doubt either makes it to the big league on our team.

Our best field prospects were probably all drafted last year (Kris Harvey, Brett West, and Gaby Sanchez), but none of them are anywhere near big league ready.

I forgot about Ramirez, and don't count Jacobs as a prospect. But thanks for clarifying that. At least there's some method to the madness now.

no problem, and as mentioned in previous posts.

We've got about 20 pitchers that we can use to get solid vets.

Yeah, Hanley was only best prospect we acquired this offseason. And Jacobs is still a prospect. 100 ABs in the majors doesn't change that. Regardless, this strategy is unique to say the least. But pitching is always wanted and at a premium, and considering how expensive it is to sign somebody else's, it's not a bad idea. But they need a C, 2B, and a CF. LF you can fill in. I'd like to find a franchise C so the young staff can build with him, and Willingham is not good at calling games. He's better suited somewhere else, or even in a trade for something. I like his stick, though.

I was really mad when the Rockies traded Juan Pierre to the Marlins...I loved watching Pierre play and the way he hustled and stole bases....I also thought he would wind up with the Yankees and replace Bernie Williams. I see a lot of Cubs games on WGN and he should be a nice leadoff man for them. The Marlins really had a big fire sale.
