The mysterious half-smile that has intrigued viewers of the Mona Lisa for centuries isn't really that difficult to interpret, Dutch researchers said Thursday.

he was smiling because she was happy — 83 percent happy, to be exact, according to scientists from the University of Amsterdam.

In what they viewed as a fun demonstration of technology rather than a serious experiment, the researchers scanned a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece and subjected it to cutting-edge "emotion recognition" software, developed in collaboration with the University of Illinois.

maybe see was 83% happy because she knew that for hundreds of years to come people would be wondering "why the hell is she smiling?" and she thought that was mildly amusing

But maybe the real Mona Lisa (provided she existsed and wasn't just an abstarct interpretation of some manner of 'muse' figure) had a nasty scar on her face and was all like "But Leonardo, I don't want-a you to paint-a the scar!" and DaVinci was all like "Shut up-pa you mouth! I paint-a you without-a the scar!" and she was all like :)

The leading theory among art scholars is that the Mona Lisa is a self portrait of Da Vinci in drag..

The facial structure of Da Vinci and Mona Lisa are remarkably similar.

The big deal is Davinci painted it so you can't tell if she is or isn't smiling...depends on how you look at it.....if you read the Davinci Code the painting is supposed to be a code which eventually indicates that Mary Magdelene was the wife of Jesus.
