A lawyer for several convenience store owners says David Ortiz, Miguel Tejada, Pedro Martinez, Octavio Dotel and Julio Lugo all have been named as defendants in a phone card scam that has resulted in a $35 million civil lawsuit, according to a report in The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.

Attorney Salvatore Delgado, according to the newspaper, says his clients unknowingly sold defective phone cards advertised by the standout Dominican baseball players.

American Worldwide Telecom, STX Communications, TWD Prepaid Cards, STI Mobile and Global Compass Inc. are also named in the lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday in New York, and reportedly claims fraud and deceptive advertising as the phone cards allegedly shortchanged users. Delgado told The Times that the cards, known as Grandes Ligas (Major Legues) were bought by Dominicans who subsequently used them to call home.
