Wow, congrats to Jim Bates. He's done a great job with their D over there, and I think he's inherited a very good team there in Green Bay (when healthy). Congrats to Bates.

Congrats, JIM!!!!!!

I hope this is true. He's a class act and deserves it. God for him, this makes me happy.

I still think he was the second best choice for our HC. After Saban, of course. And I wish Bates had been our HC instead of Wanny.

This is what Clayton said yesterday.

Bates in the lead for GreenBay job?

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog...n_john#20060110

Here is a part for those without insider.

Thompson would have liked a way to get Brad Childress and Bates, but Childress took the Vikings job before interviewing, and Bates made it clear he's not staying if he doesn't get the head coaching job. Thompson wouldn't want to lose Bates, so the only way to keep him is by hiring him as the head coach. This could be a decision as early as Wednesday.

I don't know about that, he certainly has an infectious personality that motivates players.

Bad news guys. Seems like Jim Bates won't get the job. :(

Jim Bates said he has been removed from consideration as the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

In an exclusive interview with the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Bates, the Packers’ defensive coordinator, said general manager Ted Thompson informed him Wednesday evening he was out of the running to replace the fired Mike Sherman as head coach.

Bates, 58, said he was disappointed in Thompson’s decision.

“It’s rough,” he said early Wednesday evening. “It’s really hard. I felt good about my chances. It’s a blow.”

Yep, you are right. ESPN is reporting the Packers are going to hire Mike McCarthy, who is the offensive coordinator for the 49ers.

Bates should've gotten the job. He performed marvelously for the Packers, turning them into a team that ranked 25th given up in yardage to 7th. Plus he had the team behind him like he had in Miami. Of course we got Saban instead who was worth it (and who we'd had hoped would still team up with buddy Bates). Packers get a 49er coach who led an inept offense.

I wouldnt have hired Bates. I wouldnt hire the 9ers dud offensive coach either, he has some ties to Brett Farve supposedly so maybe thats their angle, Im not sure. Bates defenses are always ranked high and always blow games, our defense was a paper tiger defense when he was here. On paper great but when we needed 4th quarter stops or big plays nonexistant.

Both would've had the support of Favre. Plus, Bates has head coaching experience and helped us go 3-4 while Wanny went 1-8. I wouldn't say that big plays were nonexistant. That's up to players more than the coaches. And probably a reason we gave up big plays was in part due to Wanny. With Bates, the D came up big against the Pats to help set up the scoring drive.

Our defense always blew big games, it was consistant. I dont see going 3-4 with a crappy team a big boost on your resume. I like Bates, hes a good guy but I wouldnt hire him as a headcoach.

That is a seriously flawed view of what Bates accomplished here.

If it wasn't for Jim Bates' defenses, Miami might have had more losing seasons. They had the ability to take over games, and around 2000 they even scored a lot of the team's points. In 2003 nobody could run the ball against them.

Sometimes the defense faltered late (and they played abysmal defensively on the road in 2002), but it was the reason Miami could compete. How would Miami have garnered winning seasons with Jay Fiedler at quarterback otherwise?

I never supported Bates for Miami's head coaching job, but 3-4 with last year's team was pretty impressive, including a win over the Patriots. Consider the fact that the team was 1-8 before he took over, with little to no offense due to horrible offensive coordinating/offensive line play. The team offensively looked like one of the early 90s Patriot franchises.

He got a lot out of a little.
