View Full Version : Big News With Am2 -- Finally!!!!!

I know I may be in the minority but I have waited YEARS for this announcement. It has FINALLY been confirmed that Shenmue 3 will in fact be released. This is easily one of the greatest stories i've ever experienced in video games. I played the first one on Dreamcast and fell in love. I then bought an XBOX just so I could play the sequel, Shenmue II (I owned Shenmue II months before I actually got an XBOX  ). I've beaten them both many times now and have been reading forum after forum for a while now with no word on the final chapter's release.

For those of you not familiar with this series, it's like beginning a series you know to be a trilogy but the final chapter is put off for years and years and years after you've been built up big time. This game has such an enormous production cost because of its level of detail, Yu Suzuki (creator of Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, Super Hang-On) hadn't been able to procure funding to finish the story. It's about d@mn time!!!! Apparently they were waiting for a next-gen console to sign them (will more than likely be 360). The game is said to be complete at this point but needs a home I guess. The reason Shenmue II chose XBOX as its home was because the XBOX was the only system that could handle all that the game has to offer. PS2 didn't come close. Next-gen maybe a bit different so a switch is possible. :dunno:

  Awesome! I loved the first one. One of those games that seems like an "experience" rather than a game you just played. Great storyline. Haven't played the second yet. That would be awesome if they put the whole story into one game. I remember when the first one came out they were saying it was the first of like 16 games, like a new FF or something. Great game.

I've heard they are working on a MASSIVE Shenmue online game, guess thats not gonna come out.

So JP, give me a summary/opinion on the 2nd one!?!?!

Sweet! The Shenmue series rocks. Can't wait to see 3 in action.

I'm hoping for two things with Shenmue.

-Release complete storyline game
-Cross platform

It sounds as if "complete storyline" will be implemented in some way from that report. Also, part II included a DVD 'feature length movie' with the entire story of part one to link everything together for those that hadn't played part I. Now, SpeedRush, if you haven't played part II you should really consider it. I think it is better than part I in some ways. You can compete in arm wrestling contests, various martial arts contests (different types of fighting), you can play street vendor games and also eventually work at the stands. You can go to casinos and the arcades come back too with more games. The areas are much bigger and you go to more than just one city. You start off in Hong Kong then go to Kowloon China then to one more place (it's been so long I can't remember the name of it...its a remote village). There's word that Ryo returns to Japan in part III so we'll see how that goes. The way Part II ended has just kept me on edge ALL THIS TIME. Like Rush said, it is more of an experience as far as the story goes, it's like playing a movie. :rocker:

Yea for a while I was almost positive I was one of 20 in the entire world that was pi$$ed that the story had no indication of ever being concluded. I freaked when I saw this news. When the story last ended (I now remember where it was) in Guiline (SP? Pronounced Gwee-lynn) China I was so excited about finding Shenhua.....the staple character we'd NEVER met.

So JP, give me a summary/opinion on the 2nd one!?!?!
First of all this installment does an amazing job of making you feel like a sheltered kid in a huge environment. Hong Kong right of the ship feels a bit overwhelming. The ways you can make money in this game increase too, you can now gamble, fight and play fun little games (also gambling) to win money. As I said before there are now 3 locations you go to: 2 larger cities and 1 small villiage. It doesn't have that boxed-in feel I eventually started to develop with part I (you must consider that the XBOX is just a tad bit more powerful than the Dreamcast  ). If you liked the first one you MUST play part II and now I MUST PLAY THE FINAL CHAPTER!!!

An example of how the story is so great: When you reach Kowloon China you must find a way into the criminal underground. They won't let outsiders in so what you must do is impress a scout (identified for you by a local) that brings in talented martial artists off the streets. So you go to martial arts street shows, bet, fight and if you win you 'impress the scout' (you must first make sure he's attending that particular event). After he's impressed with you winning (I think) 6 different contests with 6 different types of combat he'll approach you and offer you a chance to get into the underground. Once accepted you can continue your searches. Ya see? It's freakin' sweet.
