The guy I'm wanting to watch the most is Quincy Butler. I think he'd be a good day 2 pick for us. He seems to have the size that Saban likes at CB and he's good in coverage and has decent speed. He also appears to have solid tackling skills and that's very important for Saban. I will definatly keep my eye on this one along with some of the guys you've listed here. I'll definately be watching Pinegar, Olson, and Gradowski.

DB 6'1 190 TCU
36 Solo 17 Ast 53 Total 2 TFL
5 Int 76 yards 15.2 avg 41 long 8 breakups

That TCU defense wasn't too bad and hung with a few good teams. The opening win against Oklahoma that sent them going wheels off. And then beating Iowa State in the EV1.net Bowl game.

Yeah, we definitely need big, speedy DBs who can tackle.

I forgot about the Hula Bowl as well - This Sat. 7pm EST.

Does anyone have any info or links that talk about who has impressed at the Shrine game practices this week? I know it doesn't get the coverage the Senior Bowl gets, but there are some interesting players there and I was wondering how some of them look.

Just looked at both rosters... Some stellar talent in the defensive backfield... Look out for Marcus Maxey and Josh Lay at CB and Marcus Hudson and Nate Salley at S ... 4 of my sleeper picks... Barrick Nealy should be fun to watch along with Bruce Gradkowski and Brent Basneaz....

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:12 PM
Tarvarus Jackson starting QB for East. Chris Gocong makes great backfield play on leak route throw...TFL

False Start on Stevenson OL.

Short middle TE throw...Dwayne Slay missed tackle looong gain by Cooper Wallace. RB Howard two good runs, takes advantage of missed tackles, TD East. 4 missed tackles in drive. One by Slay. Not sure who else. Very slow start with the missed tackles....guys not comfortable.

- McNeal nearly picked.. Strong rush... Keep me updated CK...

Reggie McNeal starts at QB for West. Rolls out, HORRIBLE decision long...double covered. Too hesitant. Open man 10 yards in front of him. Keep an eye on Tim Day....McNeal high pass over the middle, comes down with it good. Excellent athlete.

Good scramble by McNeal for first. Golston goes offsides. Taurean looks good, fast running.

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:20 PM
Keep talking about McNeal but this is his home team offense and he's not looking great throwing. He's just running everything. Good rush number 90 holy crap he's fast....Wyche. Great speedster

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:22 PM
Vickel Vaughn had a nice open field tackle on McNeal... Im keeping a close eye on him.. Not impressed with McNeals arm.. He could be a nice WR though, great speed...

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:23 PM
McNeal doesnt look like he's out here to prove anything as a passer and he needs to. End-around, good coverage of it by Vickiel Vaughn, two plays in a row for him. Sloppy play on D all around.

Holy crap Eric Henderson great containment on the outside on rolling McNeal...MATCHED Reggie with his speed.

01-21-2006, 05:26 PM
Who was that chasing McNeal on that TD play....wow is he quick.

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:26 PM
McNeal sucks... That pass was horrid.. This Day kid is going to be something good... Who were those 2 players chasing McNeal? #51 and I believe someone from Troy... Great speed... Great containment...

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:27 PM
I love Tim Day. Very reliable target. Man Wyche is fast as an outside rusher. Good tackle Brandon Hoyte near goal line. Two plays in a row...great DL play.

Great rush from Schlegel, Henderson. Holy crap what a play from Tim Day. Not a ball Reggie McNeal should have thrown, but somehow Tim Day comes up with it in traffic. Great day for Day so far.

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:29 PM
Should have been Schlegel and Henderson chasing McNeal while he rolled right then left. McNeal's arm is good. It's his decisions so far that suck. His accuracy looks ok too...but what good is accuracy when you're throwing to covered guys? Reminds me of Omar Jacobs vs. Boise State....accurate strong passes straight to WRs who are covered.

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:30 PM
Who was that chasing McNeal on that TD play....wow is he quick.

Let me check the roster real quick.. You beat me too it.. I was wondering myself.. #51 was Anthony Schlegel.. An ILB for Ohio State... Ranked #9 out of ILB's on NFLdraftcoundown.com.. I expect him to go late 1st early 2nd day...

OurHeartAndSoul

CK Tim Day looks like an impressive reciever, how are his blocking skills? Do you think his game can translate well into the NFL at H-Back?

dm416
01-21-2006, 05:33 PM
Leon Washington looks good

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:35 PM
Leon Washington... Nice..

Horrible mechanics on the first throw right there by Jackson, his feet were all tied up, nearly picked.. Nice play by Hopoi....

Washington goes nowhere...

Jackson does nothing right there... Bad run.. Noone open

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:37 PM
Leon looking real good. Fifita not bad. Not special yet. Hopoi had a good rush. Fifita bounced in pretty good on another play on stunt to outside but was falling as he pressured Tarvarus. Punter is real good but didnt show much control on touchback.

Tim Day should be a TE, not H-Back. He was mostly a blocker at Oregon. He reminds me a lot of Donald Lee as a prospect. Blocking specialist that was underused in the passing game at Oregon and has the athleticism to be good on both ends.

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:39 PM
They keep talking about McNeal but he his feet give him an unfair advantage in All-Star games.

McNeal just fired a nice ball on post in to Carter. TAMU to TAMU, both know this offense. Advantage to them

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:40 PM
James Anderson is looking pretty good so far. Cofield got a good push too.

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:40 PM
Nice Pass by McNeal to Carter... Big yardage.. A tad high but good enough...

Another decent pass... Screen... Gilbert Harris with the catch... Gain of about 6 or 7...

Torean Henderson with a decent run of 4 or 5 yards... 1st down...

End of first...

dm416
01-21-2006, 05:42 PM
I don't know why but Reggie McNeal reminds me of Aaron Brooks

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:45 PM
Theres Hass... I, personally, have been waiting for him... Decent pass by McNeal... He was pretty embarassingly wide open though....

Theres Torean Henderson again.. Decent run.. Studder step made him go down right there though...

TD Torean Henderson... Nice drive...

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:46 PM
BTW Golston has looked good so far, it is really hard to judge these big uglies upon the first review. Lucky for me the DVR is going back home. I'll get a good look at this stuff later.

Mike Hass is smart and Reggie is doing a great time buying time with his feet, but that rolling to the left then throwing back to the middle crap is generally referred to as a bad decision in the NFL.

Taurean Henderson continuing to look good. On D I'm noticing good hustle from James Anderson and Brandon Hoyte. This is set up to be a shootout. The West needs to take McNeal out of this game. He's got way too many advantages. Put Mike Vick in any given pro bowl and I bet he'd dominate like this too. That doesn't mean he's this good week in and week out against defenses that practice together and have game plans.

Gradowski's in at QB

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:50 PM

Dwayne Slay puts stops on roll out pass to Brandon Williams.

Jonathan Orr made a nice catch but he's hurt

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:51 PM
Yes, Gradkowski in.. Nice...

Decent pass... Offbalace throw although there was no pressure, it gets the job done... Gain of around 7 or 8...

Didnt catch that play.. Stupid Torean Henderson...

Gradkowski throws it out of bounds.. Not nice at all.. Released WAY to high.. Nice coverage by Quincy Butler... Orr is hurt as wel...

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:51 PM
Orr down field, out of bounds, good coverage Quincy Butler, but Orr made the tough catch just didnt stay in bounds. Good long throw for Grad.

Gocong is having a nice day.

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:54 PM
Being picky on the Gradkowski throw, there was nothing wrong with it, it was just excellent coverage from the physical Butler on the tall but skinny Orr. Orr had a shot at the ball. He caught it. Butler just legally forced him out of bounds first.

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 05:54 PM
Can't wait to see Basneaz and Pinegar.... Orr came off under own power..

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 05:56 PM
And I meant Gradkowski when I said 'He's going to look GOOD.'

This punter is good. Booms them. Orr is ok, banged his head. Good STs tackle James Anderson, he's a next-level guy.

Drew Olson in. Watch him choke. He's as predictable as a clock in these situations, usually.

paskerbrandon
01-21-2006, 06:04 PM
Olson is in..

- Not sure what happened first play..

- Nice pass to Ross... Gain of around 20...

- Hit as he threw... Dion Byrum with a hand on it... Just missed pick..

- Olson quick hitter to Jeff Webb... gain of 10... first down.... nice pass... I like what I see so far from Olson.... moving the football nicley...

- Olson with a throw over the head of Watkins... Didnt look good at all...

- False start...

- Deep pass... Nice throw... Reciever was tripped.. Peprah with the penalty... Pretty obvious call right there.. Watkins was tripped up...

- Encroachment

- Horrid throw... He just cant seem to hook up with Watkins... Way too much on the ball...

- Run.. up the middle... gain of around 2 or 3... 3rd and 1...

- Olson nice pass... TD to TE David Thomas.. Wide open lane for the TD...

Olson looked decent on that drive... pretty impressive.. few errant passes... other than that, he was solid...

A true Olson doubter to the end :/. Focus on the high passes (which were a function of him being a bit too hyper) and not the good judgement on the ones he made and the accuracy of them.

- Screen, Washington... This kids impressive... reminds me WAY to much of Travis Minor though.. either wat nice run.. Penalty however, holding call on Henshaw...

- Gradkowski wonderful deep pass... What a catch by Jennings, that was impressive as hell... jumped right over the D-back.. Wonderful pass by Bruce.. nice play..

- Run.. Washington.. Gain of a yard..

- Gradkowski... That looked real bad... heavy pressure and he got WAY to giddy.. errant pass... Incomplete.. Penalty on Henshaw... Offensive pass interference.. Decliend..

- Timeout East...

Agree with most of what has been said, but disagree about Gradkowski's 'errant' pass. He was under fire from every direction, did a good job avoiding rush, ended up having his shoulder pulled as he threw so it hit the turf.

Colston great second effort. Gradkowski is impressive in that he puts things together well. None of his throws are ever bad. And he's got great feet and a feel for the rush. Not a gun for an arm. None of his passes make you say holy crap. He's a WCO guy.

Basneaz is...

- Pitch.. Gain of 6..

- Washington.. Gain of a yard.. 3rd and 5....

- Haha Basneaz "Hold you f****g water", think again when putting a mic on him.. thats great......

- Made them jump... first down... wonderful on Basneaz's part...

- De'Arrius Howard nice run.. gain of aroudn 9...

- Quick pass.. Low.. catchable by Jennings there...

- Overthrew Jennings.. Jennings may have been held... East is going for it... Another example of great coverage by Butler... Impressive....

- Basneaz with a nice quick hit to Colston again.. Colston and Jennings are sweet..

- Basneaz goes down.. Gocong is having a hay-day... Jolly gets the sack... Goncong is impressive.. keep an eye on him...

- Basneaz quick hit to Washington.. Nice gain.. Slay just layed the smack down..

- Another pass to Washington.. He falls down.. Not his fault.. Nice coverage and tried to make a move to fast..

- Another 4th down right here... Goes for it all.. Nice coverage.. Deflected by Quincy Butler... WOW.. Quincy Butler.. We need to draft this kid..

Quincy Butler continues to cover well.

Basanez has no arm. His rifles look like lobs. Colston is excellent.

Chris Gocong still all over the place. Jolly gets the sack but Gocong did that.

Dwayne Slay finally gets the hit he's been looking for. Two in a row on Leon. Ellison should have gotten burned but Leon fell...Slay finished off.

Terrible attempt by Basanez for the hail mary. Colston was up on Butler trying to catch but Appel was there to help. Butler great defense because he ended up being alone since Appel sucks, never even challenged for the ball. Single up Colston on Andrews? Colston gets it. Single him up on Butler? No dice. That's the bottom line here.

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 06:37 PM
I'm not even bothering debatingt the QB thing. Needless to say, there's plenty to be learned in both the East-West practices, and the game itself. If you're a scout, the game itself holds nuggets of knowledge that you really already should know. If you're not a scout and don't travel around the country and have access to films of any game you want, then there's plenty to learn.

I've never even heard of Quincy Butler, what school did he go to???

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 06:52 PM
First half thoughts? A lot of things I already knew.

Brett Basanez is not an NFL QB. Neither is Drew Olson or Tarverus Henderson. Reggie McNeal is a worse passer than Vick, but he is better sized and has just as much speed. He's got a clear advantage out here though. Leon Washington is an NFL RB. He'll do fine. Marques Colston will have to move to TE but he has good prospects there. Quincy Butler is a shutdown corner...against lesser WRs. He's very physical though, very savvy, challenges on the ball...excellent. Dwayne Slay had an uncharacteristic missed tackle on TE early, recovered with some nice tackles later. He lays out for every hit, needs to learn to wrap better. He's still a man among boys type. James Anderson is a next level linebacker, as his Brandon Hoyte. Anderson can probably fight his way from the bottom though in special teams where Hoyte may not have that ability.

Jennings good concentration so far at WR. Brandon Williams as shifty as advertised. Jonathon Orr is one of those almost-there guys. Have to take a shot on him if he is there late. Steven Fifita is not a difference maker today but guys that are on the DL include Chris Gocong, Kedrick Golston, James Wyche (who should make us all salivate), and Eric Henderson.

Tim Day, you can play for me. Taurean Henderson and Leon Washington the best RBs so far, by far. Todd Watkins has blazing speed at WR, he makes me drool. Bruce Gradkowski looks every bit the guy I've known him to be.

Devan Long, Justin Wyatt? Where are you?

Nice halftime special on Brett Basanez and his vision. He does have very good vision, just a wet noodle for an arm. He needs to become Charlie Whitehurst's personal trainer or something. What Whitehurst needs is vision, and he needs it badly. He's got everything else. Basanez should become a QB coach, he's got a better future there than at QB.

some quick questions...

able to see slay in coverage? if so, how is he doing?

Does Jonathan Orr look any good?

Jon Orr is a frustrating 'almost there' type of guy. Good mid round value type.

It is REALLY hard to judge these safeties in anything but tackling. Really hard to judge the OL, I havent made a single OL observation yet. I will have to do that in my 2nd or 3rd viewing of the tape

Oh god Pinegar what were you thinking? Dion Byrum made a HECK of a play. GREAT jump on that slant. Rocky McIntosh comes down with it way to make a play man. Someone kidnapped the Paul Pinegar before the USC game and replaced him with a fraud of a QB I'm telling you. What happened Paul???

Good throw across body from Brett. Still, nothing here shows me he can be an NFL QB.

Vickiel Vaughn tremendous hit. Trying to get Pinegar back into this game with easy rhythm stuff.

Badly underthrown ball, Hass what a crafty son of a gun. Great catch. Byrum didn't play the ball very well.

Pinegar throws up a duck here. Man. Hass does have great game instincts. Jurevicius is a good comparison.

Not impressed by Pinegar. It's not just that he's not making the right throws. It's his accuracy and his arm too. He just looks like he doesn't have what it takes. It would be one thing if his accuracy was great too, or if he was flashing a decent arm, but his arm is like Basanez, wet noodle.

I envy you guys who can focus on football today. I'm at work and it's all college basketball.

I'm taping the game at home so any evaluation will be much mater.

But I did just notice that ridiculous weak throw to the deep sideline by Pinegar, identical to the lack of arm he displayed on that type of throw many times against USC. I mentioned that specifically in another forum here the other day. True, the WR bailed him out by adjusting for the catch, but evidence like that has to drop Pinegar's stock.

i like the rb from arkansas. i thought i heard that he is 230 and runs a 4.4 not bad. This Jackson qb sure has a lot of arm strength, he threw an out pattern faster than ive seen so far. seems like no one can catch his passes... too hard.

Boldin ran a 4.6.

neither are overly fast, but they both are quick enough to play WR IMO.

Boldin is built bigger and he is stronger, but colston is taller. i dont see him switching postions at all. if he did, he would probably be playing TE in this game.

ckparrothead
01-21-2006, 07:33 PM
James Wyche is a man among boys out there. Drew Olson continues to suck IMO. I want to see Todd Watkins in action more and he's not even being given the chance.

I would be ALL over Wyche in the draft.

BTW Boldin may have timed 4.6 but he has amazing hips. Colston does not play with great hips or swivel. He'll probably need to move. No big deal though.

I've had my eyes on Slay since TTech played Bama in the bowl game. He is most definitely a prospect Nick will look at, ESPECIALLY where he's regarded right now among Safety prospects. I see this guy listed way down on the safety lists and only Mel Kiper seems to have this guy where he should be...up in the 2nd round. I'm sure scouts have him about right but if they all get caught with their pants down thinking that nobody will take him until Day 2, he could fall that far based on mass stupidity. It has happened before.

Slay should be in the SENIOR BOWL. Not the Shrine game. The only thing more insulting is Marcus McNeil in the Hula Bowl.

Wow. Reggie is on FIRE. He's answering a few questions right now let me tell you. You can't argue with like two TDs in two drives with like 5 plays total. Man. Deep throws to Hass and Watkins (Watkins looked REALLY impressive). Second throw to Hass really impressive though. The most impressive part of the second drive was he made use of his two best players among the receivers in Hass and Watkins.

Reggie McNeal gets the game ball. I'm still not a believer, but he's got enough to be drafted as a QB not a WR. There's more I'd like to see before I close the book on him for sure.

Wow...I just watched the game that I recorded earlier because I had to work. I gotta tell you, McNeil was impresive!! I know he had some advantages that the other Qb's didnt, and there were no blitzes, but his accuracy on long passes, and his calm demenor when the game was on the line...very impresive indeed!!!

ckparrothead
01-23-2006, 12:34 PM
I think McNeal kind of did what he needed to do to continue being considered as a QB prospect instead of moving to a different position. He DID have a lot of advantages out there that the other guys did not. He not only used the same playbook that he's worked out at TAMU for a long time now, but he also had his top option receiver Carter on the team too, and they definitely hooked up with each other in some big situations. It was no coincidence that he completed a deep pass to Carter and another chain-mover earlier in the game. Also, with the lack of blitzing and complex defense, you just don't defend against Reggie's legs and that entire first touchdown drive of his was purely accomplished with Reggie's legs, not so much his arm at all (he wasn't actually making very good decisions with his arm). Where he impressed me were the deep passes to Todd Watkins and Mike Hass. That right there said to me, this guy might be a quarterback after all. Hass is a much slower target than Watkins, so you have good variety in where those receivers were going to be as they streaked down the field, but he still hit them, and he did it all very calmly.

This guy is like a Mike Vick clone, except he's 2 inches taller and apparently can hit deep passes. He's not as good as Vick in a lot of ways, but similar in enough ways that he should probably get a shot at QB...and if his stock rises based on this performance as I think it will, I will not be surprised to see his name called in the 2nd round a la Quincy Carter.
