Thousands of credit card numbers were stolen from a state government Web site that allows residents to register their cars and buy state permits, authorities said Friday.

The private company that runs http://www.ri.gov (http://www.ri.gov/) said that 4,118 credit card numbers had probably been taken, a state official said. All online transactions were suspended Friday until any possible security problems could be fixed.

"We just can't risk it," said Department of Administration Director Beverly Najarian.

That is not right. What if that was one of my families credit cards?

Then you family would be in trouble, unless the theif was caught, even so recouping any damage done is unlikely. Just like the other 2000+ families who's CC numbers got stolen.

trust me any cards stolen will NOT have to pay the charges that go through. and they will be tracking down the hackers. Its a goverment site.

Unless the site takes responsibility for that I am not sure. Someone has to pay for it.
