George Steinbrenner began spring training in classic Boss style, saying he was disappointed some of his New York Yankees (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/teams/yankees) stars will be leaving camp for the first World Baseball Classic.

Steinbrenner was surrounded by reporters when he finished his lunch at Legends Field on Thursday, the team's reporting date for pitchers and catchers. He gave brief responses to questions, talking about the Yankees and the WBC, which runs from March 3-20. Derek Jeter (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/5406), Alex Rodriguez (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/5275) and Johnny Damon (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/5484) are on the U.S. roster, and Bernie Williams (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/4695) is on Puerto Rico's preliminary roster.

When baseball owners approved the World Cup in August 2004 at the urging of baseball commissioner Bud Selig, the Yankees abstained.

LOL, yeah it can. No Yankee pitchers are playing. Matsui isn't playing and they are about to put the squash on Posada playing!

With A-Rod and Jeter the negative press would be too much if they didn't go so he has to let them go because of their huge name status

I actually think Matsui not playing is an even better deal than if Jeter or Arod didn't play. Matsui IS Japanese baseball. Him not playing for them must piss a lot of people off in Japan, if they even care about the WBC.

I don't know why people are getting on George hear. I agree with him. If I owned a baseball team I wouldn't want any of my players playing for this thing. It's meaningless. What if Jeter or Arod gets hurt? It would be a huge loss for the Yankees. Or what if Billy Wagner or Pedro blows out his arm in the WBC, the Mets are screwed.

Or maybe it's not about the money. Maybe it's the simple fact that the Yankee pitching sucks or is too old and fragile.

I'm sure the U.S. was falling all over itself to get Carl Pavano and Jared Wright on board.

LOL, this coming from a fan who's team just admitted this past week they might have made a mistake by getting Beckett and not giving him a full physical first! OK, old and fragile! Schilling, Wells, and Beckett! Don't be throwing stones from that glass house!

You don't think team USA could use Randy Johnson? That Mariano Rivera couldn't make a team? :sidelol: OK, whatever!

I'm not the one spouting off that John Henry's money is the only reason that Schilling, Wells and Beckett aren't there.

USA could use Johnson as much as they could use Schilling, but neither would ever happen.

As far as Rivera, does Panama even have a team? What the hell are you talking about? You are a WBC expert, why don't you brush up on the teams actually in the tournament.

Has Mike Piazza spent a day in Italy in his life? Yet he is playing for them and not the USA!!! I am sure they could have found a spot for Rivera on some team where Panama could have been included.

Panama does have a team in the WBC. Rivera choose not to pitch for them, although I'm sure George would have put a stop to it if Rivera did decide to pitch.

Isn't that what Ozzie Guillen was mad about? A-Rod not actually being from the Dominican and Nomar not being from Mexico and you started a thread stating he needed to shutup.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing the Yankees lose. I just wonder what their thinking is signing some of the guys like Farnsworth and Wright, Leo Mazzone works magic with pitchers and signing guys who have had success with him and hoping they have the same success is very risky, IMO.

Curious, are any of those red sox pitchers in the Classic either? Then what's your point?

Mike Timlin, Lenny DiNardo and Julian Tavares are in the WBC. So I guess you really don't have a point now.

Maybe the expert should brush up on his WBC facts. I'm sure the internet has links to each country's roster.

So you are willing to admit that John Henry's money isn't the only reason that Red Sox starters aren't in the WBC, correct? That Red Sox starters have other issues.

Well, maybe the same is true for Yankee pitchers. Maybe Georgie's money isn't the only reason that Pavano and Wright aren't there.

What an asinine original post, sounds about right...

I didn't know Wright and Pavano are the ONLY 2 Yankee pitchers! :shakeno:

Your telling me Rivera couldn't find a spot on a team? Or Randy Johnson? Please. They didn't go because of the money. If Schilling was healthy, yeah he would be on TEAM USA if the Red Sox allowed him. I don't see any other STARTING Sox pitchers though.

I don't even understand this discussion to be honest with ya. Neither Boston or NY has great pitching. Yeah, everyone gets that. And why are you so angry and upset??? Chill out dude! It's Feb 22nd! Rleax!

This coming from someone who verbally attacks individuals at any chance he gets. Don't be hypocritical or anything...

And that comment of mine wasn't anger, it's fact. Brush up on the rosters.

:boohoo: Grow up!

:sidelol: cause I'm the one crying in this thread.

If you are the supposed expert on the WBC you should have at least a slight idea of what you are talking about. Why don't you go study up some and then get back to us.

Or you can continue to spew your drivel all over this message board. "Dontrelle is an average pitcher", "West Virginia is the best team in the Big East" (not as asinine, but wrong nonetheless), "the only reason Yankee pitchers aren't at the WBC is because of Georgie's money" blah blah blah. Do you even think before you post? Most of it is just completely asinine on every level.

Considering my past debates with you on this message board, this thread is not surprising.

I can't have the opinion that WV is the best team in the Big East? It's an opinion. You want me to dig up your posts from last year where you claimed the Red Sox would win the AL East cause of their "easy" 2nd half schedule and the fact they were home for a ton of games in August and September? Wrong there? I think so! The ONLY reason Yankee pitchers AREN'T in the WBC is because of George's money! Like I said, you don't think Team USA could use a Randy Johnson? Please. Sure, not every Yankee pitcher is good enough to play in this thing. Nobody is stupid enough to believe that. But that isn't what I said and you are twisting my words (surprise surprise)

And your underlying "hate" towards me..........get over it dude! You feel the need to respond to all of my posts and just "disagree" for th sake of starting soemthing with me. Get over it. Get over yourself. Get over your little "Man-Crush" on me! Move on!

The Red Sox had one of the best home records in baseball last year. I backed up that opinion of mine with FACT. You spew your senseless drivel with no fact backing it up. You claim Dontrelle Willis is average because you have some personal agenda against the Marlins. Why? Not a clue, maybe it has to do with them celebrating in the Toilet in '03.

And as for the second part of this nonsense... look who's whining now! I just like to point it out when you are wrong, which happens to be quite often. I don't see any harm in that, especially considering you happen to do it to everyone on this board.

Cry me a river.

Now I have an agenda against the Marlins. :sidelol: I back up my positions on that franchise with facts. Guess when I do that its an "agenda" and I guess when you do stuff its ok. Like you don't have an agenda against me! :sidelol:

I do what to everyone on this board? You have serious issues. Really. Take a chill pill and just put me on IGNORE if you can't control yourself around me.
