Vikings | Childress had thoughts of Owens in dealing with Culpepper
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 14:21:17 -0800
John Shipley, of the <A href="http://www.kffl.com/link/26">Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings (http://www.kffl.com/team/23/nfl) head coach Brad Childress (http://www.kffl.com/player/8309/nfl) said he heard enough from former QB Daunte Culpepper (http://www.kffl.com/player/1120/nfl) to know that he did not want to be with the Vikings (http://www.kffl.com/team/23/nfl) and that the feeling was mutual. Childress had plenty of background experience having to deal with WR Terrell Owens (http://www.kffl.com/player/1608/nfl) for the last two seasons. In his first public appearance in the Twin Cities, Childress told a St. Paul Chamber of Commerce luncheon crowd he didn't like what he heard from Culpepper during the few conversations they have had since Childress was hired Jan. 5. Childress was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia the past seven seasons, the last two with Owens, whose egocentric, and eccentric, behavior ultimately became such a headache that his prodigious talent was deemed not worth it.

EDIT: Sorry if the tittle thread was missleading. Brad C didn't directly say Pepp was like Owens. I was reading between the lines.

Shouldnt he be talking about who the new QB may be and not who it isnt?

He is still talking about Culpepper!? It's been a week, and he is still talking about him? Wow... Can't wait for the Vikings to come to South Florida next year... I bet this will be a Sunday night game...

This guy needs to focus on his own team rather than a player on the Miami Dolphins.

He's probably doing it to cover his ***. I imagine that the trade probably didn't go over all that spectacularly in Minnesota, and him being a new coach, he doesn't want to alienate the fans too much. So he embellishes and tries to make the Viking fans believe that he and the owner are not to blame for this.

It would look better for the Vikings if he was focusing on the future instead of the past. Before last season I said that I would be happy with either Childress or Saban. Seeing how Childress is handling things now, I must say that Saban was a much better choice. ( I never doubted that Saban was a good choice, I just thought(past tense) that Childress was a good choice as well).

See, if i were a Vikings fan i would totally agree with that because i think they made a huge mistake by trading him. Fans up here are glad to see him go. It really makes me mad cuz they always say "Good luck with Pep" like he was a bad player. Viking fans are rediculous, period.

But what he should be doing is telling the fans how he plans on putting that behind the organization and what they are doing to make things better.. But I guess being a first year head coach is tough and something like this can't help things..

What kills me is this

Childress had plenty of background experience having to deal with WR Terrell Owens (http://www.kffl.com/player/1608/nfl) for the last two seasons.

and how well did benching Owens work out for the Eagles?

Listen, in no way shape or form did I ever think Daunte was like Owens, as far as I saw, Daunte always kept his composure, even when Moss would yell at him on the side lines.

Daunte is a bigger man than I am, I would have laid Moss out had he spoke to me like that.

I'm sure Daunte didn't like where the franchise was going (Kinda like Milarky)(sp?), not to mention the team not beeing up front with him about seeking a trade. I don't blame Daunte for feeling the way he did.

One day Childress is going to realize that you don't trade away a franchise QB for a 2nd round pick just because you don't like him. Especially when your alternative is a 38 year old Brad Johnson. The Vikings are going to pay dearly for this, and it will cost him his job. Congratulations buddy, you just doomed yourself to failure before your first minicamp.

He's still trying to justify only getting a 2nd rounder for a pro-bowl QB...

I used to hold the Eagles organization in high regard, but seeing how they handled the whole TO situation, it leaves a lot to be desired. If I was an Eagles fan, I would be more pissed at TO but very pissed at the Front office (Andy Reid) for sacrificing that entire season to make a point. And in the end not getting aything in return.

Obviously Childress doesn't fall far from the tree. He's setting a bad example by still commenting on a player that's no longer with the team.

Good job Brad.

I personally think he's trying to absolve any kind of accountability if Daunte has a Pro Bowl year in Miami by saying we know he's good but he was a cancer.

It's a total spin job to make it look like Daunte forced his hand and if they didn't respond they would have another TO situation. It's bs but it a cya type of bs.

You know what I find funny? The Vikings fans said the same thing after Randy Moss left. They thought they would be better off without him. The team struggled this past season after he left. Now they are saying that the only reason Culpepper was any good was because of Randy Moss. What are they going to say after this next season is over and they have like six wins without Culpepper at the helm? Childress is a goof on top of everything else. The Vikings organization is a joke. I think that will be shown over the next few seasons.

I think Childress is just trying to cover his butt w/ fans incase there is a backlash for dumbing Culpepper, especially when they suck next year.

It wasn't in your quote, but it is here:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/football/nfl/03/20/vikings.childress.ap/index.html

"I went through a big 'me' situation last year with a guy who was all about 'me.'"

Sounds like a comparison there. This guy does sound whiny, no? I love the article on finheaven homepage by Carter ripping the vikings for trading Culpepper.

I love how Childress is throwing Culpepper under the bus here. It shows that he is of the utmost class, and clearly above the personal, me-first mentality that he so against. Oh wait...

Well, I still love it all the same, since we got Culpepper for a 2nd.

But damn, the dude's a doofus.

This makes linehan the best hire of the offseason. It was him and childress and this situation shows childress as a petty child. Give it up about dante man, you got rid of him and will regret it and be fired in a few years. Diffrence between a guy like him and saban is saban doesnt publically diss his players, he hasnt bad mouthed howard or gus now that they are gone. He doesnt say anything bad about sam or pat.

Childress is a child plain and simple, he needs keep his mouth shut and just coach his team and stop worrying about ex-players. If daunte was that much of a malcontent why does he keep talking about him. Oh and news for brad, since he has only been to philly and minnesota, when you have a ligamint tear you work out in warm enviroments now cold ones. And you would want to work out where someone can wait on you hand and foot, now near the team that you cant do anything with anyway. He will be fired in 3 years because of a move like this.
