Here's a cool chart about a bunch of the latest greatest video cards out:

http://www.finheaven.com/clear.gif

Look like ATI leads the way. The Mor needs a new card ASAP.

Dang my old 6800 GT is getting a bit long in the tooth. I have been a long time fan of Nvidia based cards but the Radeon xt1900 with a 648 core and 1548 mem clocks ... DAMN.

I've never owned an ATI cared. Been an NVidia fanboy for years... Might have to make the switch.

What about other games? Because if i remember correctly some games an ATI card is best and others NVidia is. My card isn't even on the list I do have an ATI and it needs to be upgraded, but it can still play HL2. However my roommate has a great card i forget which one ill look later, but it runs BF2, Cod2, and any other new game perfectly fine.

Speaking of PC gaming, to me at least the games i usually play and buy, there really doesn't seem to be any worth getting right now that i would want a new video card for. The only new game i would want is oblivion and i already have it on the 360

The nVIDIA 7900 GT and GTX are the fastest vcards on the market, and it's not even close when you talk about how expensive ATI vcards are.

Your chart is totally out of date by the way. It doesn't include the 7900 GT, 7900 GTX or the 7600 GT from nVIDIA.

I need a new video card, but I don't have a PCI-E board so I'll have to settle for the best AGP card. I'm still using the NVIDIA FX-5200.

nVIDIA and ATI both have solid AGP vcards.

ATI has the 800 or 850 line. nVIDIA has the 6800GS and 7800GS line. nVIDIA may come out with a 7900GS AGP version, but none of that is fact it is speculation at this point.

The 800's are around $300

The 850's are around $300-$369

The 6800GS are around $200

The 7800GS are around $269-$329

If you are all about gaming I believe the 6800GS is the best bang for the buck. If you want to game and also watch TV or do some video editing go with one of the 800's from ATI. But be warned, ATI drivers are awful, and very buggy.

 Yes actually! I used the term "fanboy" to express that I've been with the company from the beginning. It's not that The Mor has a classic fanboy issue... Y'know one of those "Nvidia is better than ATI!!! NO MATTER WHAT!" issues.

Every time The Mor buys a video card, it just happened to be an Nvidia card because I've never had a problem with one.

Ah, I get it now, and here I thought the Mor was having some self-loathing issues

i dunno, i've used 3 or 4 ATI cards over the years, never was that impressed, at least not compared to the nvidia i have now. everything seems to be handled better, especially the whole setup/technical support/driver issues. i guess it depends on which one you get. i do have an ATI TV Wonder Pro which is awesome though (obviously, not a video card).

It's a nice vcard, I had one for a few weeks last year. It's a GOOD vcard for HL2, which I know you know all about! :)

Thx, I just took a break from all the back and forth on the pofo. Sometimes I think it is healthy to take a timeout from that place. It can get awfully pesonal in there at times.

My mother taught me as a child if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. I found I was not following what my mother taught me. :)

Yes it blow HL2 away, even with HDR on. THe new games like Oblivion I have to back off on a bit, I can only run at 4x AA at 1025x768 with everything else turned on high, I know that is still good but it always hurts when you run into that first game where you have to back off even a little. Its like that writing is on the wall ..... :-P

That's simply not true, on all accounts.

Both types of vcards have their pro's and con's however. With all honesty the biggest and most serious issue ATI has is with its drivers. The are commonly known as AVG at best, and in LINUX they are down right crap. They are usually buggy, and you have to use certain versions to play certain games.

I once had an ATI X800XT not work properly because it didn't get along with an MS Internet keyboard. It took me 2 weeks to figure that out and it cost me hundreds of dollars to fix that issue for my customer. Yes that's the last time I'll ever use a ATI vcard for any PC that I build for a customer.

ATI is a wonderful vcard if you are going code video and watch TV and DVD's on your PC. It really is the BEST when it comes to that.

I'd like to show you HL2 on just a nVIDIA 6800GS compared to that R 9800 Pro.

My nephew had the same vcard and when I showed him how HL2 is supposed to look and run, yes I had to go buy a 6800GS for his PC.

Yea they are calling it a 7950, I think. It should be a GREAT vcard. I would think they'll have VIVO on it as well.

I've been on ATI the past few years after being on nVidia's for a while. I'll be going back to nVidia myself. ATI's drivers are just pure crap and prone to just causing headache issues. Half the time you don't even know if it's the game or the ATI drivers (90 times out of 100 it will be the drivers). nVidia's made a solid line of consistent cards and their only really disappointing line was the FX5200 (don't even get me started on the support issues I get on those puppies).
