they had to make laws to prevent subliminal messaging in movies and tv back in the 50's and 60's. A lot of brainwash study was going on and they realized how effectivly you could "suggest" hunger and thirst, things like that to sell products.

Actually, symbols of sex and death are the most common in subliminal advertising. Those symbols cause a reaction, which the person then subconsciously remembers and associates with that product. Then when they see it in stores, they buy it without really knowing why.

Happens all the time; joe camel's nose is a pair of testicles, etc. Most often though it's anything in a picture ad represented with a highlight or a shine; the highlights in ice cubes is a common one. And they often don't actually spell out a word, they are symbols like skulls, representations of death, representations of sex.

There's a book called Subliminal Seduction, by Wilson Bryan Key. It's out of print (hmmmm...) but you can find it cheap on amazon or at used bookstores. Pertty interesting stuff.

I don't buy into that subliminal stuff, it'd be wrong to assume it's actually undertaken.

A long time ago, I participated in a four-year study of the unconscious mind's ability to absorb subliminal messages. Back then we called it "going to college".

There are ones who dispute Key. Here's an interesting link (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_344.html)

Alright, I know what just happend was funny and I will laugh about it tomorow but as of this moment, I am pissed. I fell for it completely, It has been a long day, I get home, laying in bed, lights off, on my laptop in bed. I dont want to turn up the volume too loud so I hold my ear close to the speaker and read the words out the corner of my eye. I was shaking

 While it's true that Key does go overboard, it can't be denied that those images are there. And funny how the guy in that QA debunks Key by saying that the images are random - but they're always of the same things, sex or death.

If they were random, wouldn't they produce something different once in a while, like a bunny or a giraffe or something?

I don't know the answer. It's an interesting subject, though.

Maybe the ads are subliminal Rorschach tests and we see what we look for. I'm sure some graphic artists have had their fun as well. Or maybe the advertisers really believe it will make us drink more. HysterikiLL's post was effective on me, but then I'm easy.

Its alright, the hate is gone. It was my fault for clicking the link when I was laying down in bed, tired, with the lights. It seriously scared the living crap out of me. I was shaking for about an hour.
