Did you see him running that 40 at the combine though? He was movin' man. 4.41 40 yard dash with great size. Not to mention that gets rid of our biggest hole we had at saftey. NICE PICK NICK!

Jason Allen DB 6’2 202 Tennessee
By: Robert Davis Jason Allen enrolled early at Tennessee, but did not have any notable impact as a true freshman. As a sophomore though, he started to show some flashes of his potential. He finished the year with 57 tackles and 2 interceptions. As a junior though, he made his name known all around the country. After moving to free safety, he made 123 tackles, had two sacks, and two interceptions on the year. Allen's senior year was cut to just five games after dislocating his hip, but was impressive to that point with 35 tackles, three for loss, and a sack.
Allen is a versatile defender in the defensive backfield. He has experience at both safety and corner, and projects very well at the next level at both positions. As a corner, he has the ability to jam the receiver at the line, and turn and run with them. With his experience at safety, he shows the willingness to be physical and take on blockers and make plays in the run game. Allen has the ability to be a very good all around corner. As a free safety, he shows the recognition skills to quickly diagnose plays, and is a real force on making plays in front of him. With his corner experience and ability, he has the chance to be a real ballhawk in coverage.
With him playing safety last year and corner this year, he isn’t fully developed at either spot. Allen may be a bit of a project at corner because of the year off as a junior. If he moves back to safety at the next level, the year off will also probably take some time to adjust.
With his versatility, Allen will be in command come draft day. He flirted with leaving last year, but changed his mind at the last minute and decided to return to Tennessee for his final season. When healthy, he has NFL potential at corner or safety. His hip injury has put his future in question however. If he can show that he's fully recovered and will play next season, Allen could return to his normal spot as a potential Top 50 pick.

I am a little worried about what they were saying about his hip and Daunte's knee but the combine footage looked good and his highlights did too. Could be an exciting player for us in the future. It is definately a position the Phins needed to address.

It makes you wonder . . . at the combine, Allen ran the 40, but did not participate in the DB drills that they ran, the coverage drills. That right there makes me worry that his hip isn't right. Being able to run straight ahead is one thing, being able to swing your hips in coverage is another.

you cannot estimate the value of a DB who can line up as a safety or corner...they are invaluable to a defense...im positive parcells would have taken him next...

True it is a bit odd. I am hoping Saban and his crew know something we are not aware of. Just seems like a good bit of our team is coming off of injuries some very serious. Although sports medicine has improved greatly past few years so may all be good.

and I'am sure that saban has a plan B with a good LB in the 3 oreme rounder and a WR too.

I'am not upset about this pick saban have faith in matt roth and we don't need another DE pass rush ala manny lawson and we signed an OT yesterday so good pick for me.

Just watched his video on Yahoo and doesn't really excite based on few plays that are there. Hell two of them he got hurt. Nothing flashy and seems to make the big tackle after long gains but that doesn't suck. Thought we could have done better at 16, but Saban hasn't really too many moves that didn't help Miami out so I will trust Saban on this move as well. Honestly though a little disappointed.

i must admit... i don't love the pick in that slot... sorry...

he could turn out to be a fine safety, but it sure seems to me like they could have traded down 10-15 slots and still got him... Sporting News draft guide has him as the 10th best safety -- a late 3rd rounder... Admittedly, that magazine is put together months ago.... With all the free agent moves we made in the secondary, i thought WR was the way to go if we were gonna stay at 16... Jackson would have been ideal.... What happens if Chambers OR even Booker gets hurt?

Allen better really produce right away, or this seems like a lost draft. Flame me if you like, but it's about slotting and movement... We stood pat, with a glaring second-round hole, and took an injury risk...

Talent wise... Allen is a top 10 pick!

The ONLY question is his hip. If the Fins took him... they have done extensive research on his hip... and determined that he is ok...

Saban wouldnt have drafted him if he wasnt 100% confident in the hip.

Talent wise... we got a steal...

Of course some UGA fan would say that. I just registered to tell you guys a little more about Jason. First off, he wasn't 100% at the combine but felt good enough to run. He is 100% now, so that's no problem. As for his real speed when healthy, he usually timed right at 4.3 while at Tennessee and if you watch last year's game against Ole Miss, Allen ran down Mico McSwain from ten yards back and McSwain is a 4.3 guy. Allen also is a solid tackler, despite the running-over Ronnie Brown gave him, last year Jason was knocking back runningbacks and really looked the best he ever has at wrapping up and sticking a guy. He actually led the entire SEC in tackles in '04. He will not be a bust. He's smart, extremely fast, extremely athletic, instinctive, and relentless. The guy who started this thread is probably just ticked that nobody like Greg Blue who likes to lead with his helmet all the time...a dirty, dirty player.

He was the most athletic DB in the draft (even over Huff, as an athlete not as a prospect). He has the size Saban covets and we had a huge need at FS. He can cover and he can tackle, so-so hands. Before his injury (hip)he was a top 10 pick. There was a rumor that he has a degenerative hip condition, but that made the rounds during the last two weeks when most of the disinformation arises. If healthy, he's a great pick. I have faith that Saban checked that out and historically our physicals have been very stringent.

I am worried about the hip and a bit confused as to why they didn't pick someone else. I am worried sick over Daunte's knee and what our QB situation will be.

Having said that though, Saban has been doing a great job and he and his staff are privy to more info than I and most of us here are. I trust Saban for now because he has not done anything to make me not trust him. The man shows exceptional intelligence and thought in his actions and decisions.

This pick is questionable but only time will tell if it is a mistake or not. Let’s give it that time and stay supportive of our team and its staff.

IAFINFAN
04-29-2006, 03:23 PM
Listening to Saban he really loves this kid. Said his doctors really worked him over and thought he was 100%. Said that he gave a lot of RB/WR so concessions while at Tenn. and yet Allen hasn't had this problem than he really brings the wood and is very intelligent. With the injury and the second guessing Allen wants to prove he can succeed and Sabans thinks he will because of his work ethic and family values. Feel better about it and it does address a major need in our secondary.

PSU Cane
04-29-2006, 03:23 PM
That "IF" is a big one considering we have a lot of needs and not a lot of picks. A hip injury for an OLineman or something is one thing, they don't run much, but a hip issue for a DB is HUGE. For a DB, a hip is the most important body part in coverage. You need fuild hips to swing and run with receivers. With so many questions about his hip, it worries me. Remember Eddie Moore? Also a UT guy? Remember Yatil Green and his injury history at Miami?

It's funny they don't show all the other plays where Allen took Caddy and Ronnie down. A lot of other really good players got drilled by those two backs during their years at Auburn also. Whether now or late, you'll eventually agree that Allen is a bigtime player.

Yeah, I'm obviously a Tennessee fan. I was just looking for some Dolphins message boards to see the fan reaction to the pick....not as good as I thought. Reminds me a lot of when the Giants picked our Safety Gibril Wilson a few years ago in the later rounds and the fans were complaining and didn't know much about him.....but he was a steal and is starting for them. I think, and many others agree, that Jason is a top 10 talent if there weren't some questions about the hip. It's unfortunate because that was his only injury in college, but he's 100% now and it was determined by a number of different specialist that it was not degenerative....and that was before a single NFL team doctor looked at him.

Agreed! There are few if any backs in the NFL that would have not been rolled by those hits by Ronnie That clip has me fired up for Ronnie again now. I still wish we had Ricky in there with him but damn glad we still have Ronnie and looking forward to watching him do that to Bills, Jets, and pats DB's.
