Irish/Spanish...born in Cuba of Cuban parents. My great-grandpa (father's side) was Irish, left Ireland and passing through the Canary Islands met a woman, fell in love and they were married.. They then emigrated to Cuba before the turn of the 20th century. Straight-up Spanish on mom's side.

Cubano to the core.

I realize the difference but how far back I wonder do you have to trace it or are the descendants like the mayans in mexico to where they are well known as descendants of the mayan?

I realize the difference but how far back I wonder do you have to trace it or are the descendants like the mayans in mexico to where they are well known as descendants of the mayan? It's largely tied to culture, so people have a lot of freedom with it. The Persian culture still exists today. I think it has a lot to do with your immediate family and how you were raised. Language also plays a part. It is a strong uniter and a tangible connection to a culture. In the case of Persia, Farsi plays such a role (a beautiful language, by the way). It also has to do with how you perceive yourself and how interested you are in your past. If you feel strongly connected to where your family comes from, you probably claim that as an ethnicity. I don't think there really is a limit on it. Native American cultures such as the Mayans are a perfect example.

I'm related generations back to a persian woman who was once married to a persian merchant prince thus making her a princess. After her first husbands death she married an englishman who was part of the East India Company they had a son who became a weathly merchant and based himself Down Under

At least your ethnicity isn't a conflicted and somewhat bad combination. I mean, I'm part French, which means I can be traced to country with a war record worse than the Bills Super Bowl record. And I'm Haitian, so my family is from one of the many countries who kicked France's ***.

It's actually quite common.
Many see France as having the biggest influence on how the island turned out today and they obviously are the ones that entrenched the language.

I am Mexican American, but I am also jewish, despite the fact I don't practice it, my family on my mother's side was sefardic jewish, and my family on my father's side was just jewish...

My mother is part mexican indigenous from a group called otomí (they have another name which they rather use, but I don't know how to spell it), so I am one forth otomí.

Is your father's side from Eastern Europe or converts? If they're from Eastern Europe, then they're Ashkenazi. We have something in common, besides taste in football teams.

This may not be important to you since you're secular, but someone else reading this post may have the same issue. According to Jewish tradition your mother determines your "Jewishness." Her being Jewish also depends on her mother being Jewish, and so on. Therefore, if she's Otomí on her mother's side, then according to tradition she isn't really Jewish.

Since we're on the subject, if anyone is interested, today is Tisha B'av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. On this date, calamaties happened to us through the years including the loss of both the first and second temples, the expulsions from Spain and England, the beginning of the Holocaust, and others that I don't remember.

We fast for 25 hours, not even drinking water, sit on the floor while praying (a sign of mourning), and read the Book of Lamentations by Jeremiah.

I'm 100% human race. Anything else is just geography. Why do we choose when we go back to ? Biblically speaking, wouldn't we all be from the Garden of Eden ? If I want to get more recent, I'd be American, or (more specifically) Virginian/NorthCarolinian . I have ancestors who lived in Scotland, and some from England. That doesn't make me any more English, or Scottish than Saddam Hussein, in my opinion.
