Maurice Clarett was arrested early Wednesday after a highway chase that ended with police using Mace on the former Ohio State running back and finding four loaded guns in his truck, a police spokesman said.

Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the former Fiesta Bowl star was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said.

"It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers."

Clarett was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed. Police planned to charge him with carrying concealed weapons and other counts, Woods said.
Clarett made an illegal U-turn on the city's east side and failed to stop when officers, in a cruiser with lights flashing, tried to pull him over, Woods said.

Police were pursuing Clarett on eastbound Interstate 70 when he darted across the median and began heading west. Clarett drove over a spike strip that was placed on the highway, flattening the driver's side tires of the SUV, Woods said.

You, too, huh?

Methinks Clarett never was told "no" as a child. Hell, probably through college... He just seems selfish to the point that it had to have been ingrained through years of getting what he wanted. Even through the lawsuit to allow him to join the NFL draft early, he was surrounded by yes-men that told him he should be allowed, it wasn't fair, it's discriminatory...

Kinda makes me a little sad...:(

But not too much. He is a tool. He should've learned through all the crap he'd gone through recently. Good riddance, I say...:fire:

dude might be running from people who he owes money to..

i seen an interview on ESPN of this guy who talked to maurice hours before he got arrested. he said that he sounded very paranoid. also that when he got drafted he was ridin around in BMWs and such, and borrowed money from people that banked on him makin the NFL, which he obviously didnt.

But i know one thing, dude is rollin around with a bullet proof vest and a loaded AK, he is not ****in around. Hes either a big *** dealer and lucky he didnt get caught with nothin, or hes paranoid as hell and protecting himself from some crazy *** people....

5 million dollar bail.

Assistant prosecutor: 'He's a threat to the community'

Maurice Clarett's bond on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon was set at $5 million Thursday, a day after the former Ohio State running back was arrested following a chase with police and four loaded guns were found in his sport utility vehicle.

Prosecutors had asked Franklin County Municipal Judge Andrea Peeples for a bond for Clarett of at least $1 million.

"We feel he's a threat to the community," assistant prosecutor Chris Brown said.

Clarett, wearing a jail-issue tan jumpsuit, stood motionless and expressionless against the wall next to his lawyer during the arraignment. He did not say anything and was not asked anything by the judge.

Clarett's attorney, Nick Mango, said the $5 million bond was excessive. He would not speculate on why the guns were in the SUV Clarett was driving.
"We're very confident that there was no intent to harm anyone," he said.

Peeples said she set the bond so high because Clarett fled police. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 18.

Clarett's latest run-in with the law began when police noticed an SUV driving erratically in the early morning hours Wednesday. A highway chase ensued, ending when police spiked Clarett's tires, sending his vehicle limping into a restaurant parking lot.

Officers said they could not easily subdue Clarett because the bulletproof vest he was wearing thwarted their stun guns. It took several police using pepper spray to get the 6-foot, 245-pounder into handcuffs.

Clarett must have mental evaluation

Maurice Clarett, arrested after a bizarre and violent encounter in which he was caught by police with four guns following a chase, has been ordered to have a mental health evaluation by a judge.

The judge delayed a trial set to begin Monday on previous charges accusing the ex-Ohio State football star of holding up two people outside a bar on New Year's Day.

Judge David Fais ordered the evaluation against the wishes of Clarett and his attorneys, citing the events surrounding Clarett's arrest early Wednesday.
"I clearly understand everything and I don't know why we have to drag this thing out," said Clarett, who scoffed, smiled and rolled his head back when Fais ordered the evaluation.

Clarett, who wrote a few notes to his attorneys with his hands cuffed, said he was ready to go to trial.

Fais said he was concerned by Clarett's attorneys saying in published reports that they were worried about his mental health.

"It's my job. I have to ensure that your rights are protected," Fais said.

Fais also revoked Clarett's $1.1 million bond on the charges, meaning that Clarett figures to remain in jail until the new trial date of Sept. 18.

Clarett's latest run-in with the law began when police noticed a vehicle driving erratically, beginning a highway chase that ended with police spiking the SUV's tires. Officers said they could not easily subdue Clarett because he was wearing a bulletproof vest that thwarted their stun guns.

A postcard with a taped-on, typewritten message threatening jailed ex-Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett was sent to a law office representing him in two criminal cases, his attorney said Tuesday.

Michael Hoague, one of Clarett's attorneys, talked about the message in a phone interview just before a judge handling robbery charges against Clarett said likely will prohibit Clarett and his attorneys from talking to the media.

Hoague did not say what the threat received Monday entailed, but said it was sent from Los Angeles. Clarett, who was arrested last week after he was caught with four loaded guns following a police chase, has received threats before, Hoague said.

"We don't know quite what to make of it," Hoague said of the threat, which was typed on a sheet of paper, cut out and then put on the postcard. "It's very cryptic."

Clarett was offered plea deal

A former attorney for Maurice Clarett said Friday that a prosecutor offered a plea deal with a sentence as short as 1 1/2 years if the ex-Ohio State football standout admitted to a robbery charge.

Clarett and his two attorneys met at their law office with an assistant prosecutor who explained the plea deal in July, attorney Bob Krapenc said. Clarett fired Krapenc and his partner about two weeks later.

In the meantime, Clarett has been charged in a highway chase with police earlier this month that ended with officers catching him with four loaded guns wearing a bulletproof vest in his sport utility vehicle (http://www.srch-results.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=77&k=sport%20utility%20vehicle).

Krapenc told reporters about the plea deal, which prosecutors would not confirm, after a hearing Friday when Clarett's current defense attorneys said they were trying to find out more about the meeting. Clarett is to go on trial Sept. 18 pending a mental evaluation on charges that he held up two people outside a Columbus bar early New Year's Day and took a cell phone (http://www.srch-results.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=77&k=cell%20phone) from them.

Clarett's current attorney, Nick Mango, alleged during the hearing that Assistant Prosecutor Doug Stead may have asked Clarett questions during the meeting and suggested that alcohol was consumed, which he called "highly inappropriate" after he left the courtroom.
