Daniel Craig, the new James Bond, wants critics to give him a chance.

"If I went onto the Internet and started looking at what some people were saying about me -- which, sadly, I have done -- it would drive me insane," the British actor says in an interview in Entertainment Weekly magazine, on newsstands Friday.

"They hate me. They don't think I'm right for the role. It's as simple as that. They're passionate about it, which I understand, but I do wish they'd reserve judgment."

A group of James Bond fans have launched a Web site, www.craignotbond.com, to protest Craig replacing Pierce Brosnan in the 007 film franchise, and to boycott "Casino Royale," slated for release November 17.

The fair-haired Craig, whose screen credits include roles in "Munich" and "Layer Cake," was tapped last October to play the secret-agent icon.

While filming "Casino Royale," the 38-year-old actor was uneasy about uttering those famous words, "The name is Bond, James Bond."

"People kept asking, 'Have you done the line yet?' " Craig tells the magazine.

"But honestly, I didn't rehearse it at all. I didn't practice it in the mirror every morning or anything like that. I didn't want to even think about saying it because I didn't want it to be this weight around my neck. I just wanted to get on with it and not blow it."

Craig decided to take Bond in a new direction.

"I watched every single Bond movie three or four times, taking in everything I could about how the character had been portrayed in the past, then threw all that away once I started doing the role," Craig says.

Anyways, the trailer is up for this. I've been open minded about Craig, and I'm glad I was. He looks bad *** in this.

He was good in Munich, but he doesn't seem right for this role IMO.

He can't be any worse than George Lazenby or Roger Moore....there is only one real James Bond:

Sean Connery

I've always felt that casting for characters in movies based on books should remain faithful to the books. Does anyone know how 007 is described in the original work?

BTW, if the movie is as good as the trailer, it'll be awesome.

This may settle the issue.

Although the character of Bond is not known to be based on anyone but Fleming himself, the look of James Bond, famed for being "suave and sophisticated", is based on a young Hoagy Carmichael. In Casino Royale the character Vesper Lynd says of Bond, "He reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless." Other characteristics of Bond's look are said to be based on Fleming, such as his height, his hairstyle and his eye colour.

Craig does look like an older Hoagy, come to think of it.

According to the ever useful Wikipedia, he is a mix between Hoagy Carmichael and Ian Fleming himself. Here is a link to the sketch Ian did of what he thought he looked like: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c5/Fleming007impression.jpg

Personally, I don't really care what he looks like so long as they stop the cheesefest that has been rampant in the past few Bond movies. Actually, I don't even remember the plot of the last one, I just remember a bunch of overblown effects.

I like the direction they're going with this one. Bond is going to be what he was always supposed to be...a cold ruthless killer, instead of a gadget laden pretty boy.

Plus, with this being his first mission, we'll see the gradual transformation that makes James Bond what he is. He'll actually be human in this one...he'll be as arrogant and confident as he was in the other movies, but he won't necessarily have the experience to back it up yet. I think it will make for a good flick.

And, as for the acting, I think Daniel Craig can handle it perfectly.
