I found this to be horrible news and could not believe that Curtis Leak would even say such a thing.

Didn't Florida coach Urban Meyer learn his lesson about overbearing parents? Last season, freshman quarterback Josh Portis was more of a distraction than an asset for the Gators. His mother, Patricia Portis, regularly attended the team's practices and publicly complained about her son's lack of playing time. In December, Portis transferred to Maryland, where he and his mother will become Terrapins coach Ralph Friedgen's headache beginning in 2007.

Urban Meyer wants to avoid another QB issue.

Last month, Curtis Leak, the father of Gators quarterback Chris Leak, told a columnist that he believed a portion of the Gators fan base doesn't like his son because they didn't want an African-American quarterback breaking all of Danny Wuerffel's school passing records. Never mind that Chris Leak has fallen considerably short of the enormous expectations that preceded him to Florida. Most importantly, he has failed to lead the Gators to an SEC championship, after Wueffel led them to four conference titles and the 1996 national championship.
Now, another parent is reportedly a frequent visitor to the No. 7 Gators' practices. Bob Tebow, the father of highly touted freshman quarterback Tim Tebow, is around his son and Meyer so much that Florida's student newspaper, The Alligator, suggested in an editorial last week that "you'd think he was a member of the UF coaching staff." Bob Tebow is a pastor and maintains an international mission and orphanage in the Philippines. "The Gators kick off the 2006 season in eight days and no one seems to be in the ear of Meyer or Tebow more than Bob, and that can't be a good thing," columnist Antonio Gonzalez wrote in The Alligator. "This is so plain and simple, I'll just say it: Bob Tebow needs to go home."

Not good, big potential problem there. I can't believe Leak's dad would say something like that, thats ridiculous. Maybe Chris and Tim will play with a chip on their shoulder in spite of the BS, lets hope so anyway.

Sad thing is, Leak had the exact same hype that Tebow has now when he came in 4 years ago. I've always thought Leak was a good pocket passing QB. I think the reason for all the hype with Tebow is because he fits Meyer's system perfectly.

I have seen alot of Tim Tebow. I alot of tape and the Orange and Blue game and I don't think he is ready to QB the Gators. Tebow just needs time to hone his skills. Chris Leak is a great QB and has never ever had the WR's he will have this year. I mean they will not all be great, But he will have alot of depth.

I love Leak. He has had two main problems in winning a SEC championship at UF.
1. Zook. Enough said.
2. First year in Meyer's offense, which is not suited to Leak's strengths as a QB. I grew very frustrated last year as it didn't seem like Meyer was willing to adjust. Towards the end of the year it started to work. I think the Gators offense will explode this year (crossing my fingers on the OL) as Meyer and Leak grow from last year's lessons.

IMO Leak's dad is far off base with his assumptions. Gainesville does have a definite feel of the true "south", but I never got that feel from it's students and alumni. I don't personally know anyone who doesn't want to see Leak set a new standard for UF quarterbacks.

I'm sure there are some who just want Tebow to run the offense, but that has more to do with the typical college fan's affliction with being in love with the back-up.

This should never have been reported on. It's not news. It's an attempt by Curtis Leak to be controversial. For a reporter to write the quote down and run with it shows that it must have been a slow day at practice. For ESPN to acknowledge it shows that they need to dig a little deeper to find somthing to write about.
