UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- Rick DiPietro re-signed with the New York Islanders on Tuesday, agreeing to a record 15-year deal that will pay the No. 1 goalie $67.5 million.

The Islanders scheduled an afternoon news conference to officially announce the contract that would keep DiPietro in the fold until 2022, when he would be 40.

Quite possibly the dumbest move in the world. Everyone knows that in hockey, all you need is a hot goalie to go very far. Now, if DiPietro is a bust, they are mired in a pit of mediocrity for 15 more years. What do you tell your fans if DiPietro's GAA the next two years is something lke 4.39 each season? That you're going to get better next year, spend some money? On what? You can't pay a backup goalie that kind of money and you can't fix the problem. Bad, bad move.

He's signed until he's 40.

And there's some delusional Islander fans who think it's a great move.

He's not even going to be the best American goalie of his era.
