View Full Version : Sony may use Xfire as an Online Component *UNCONFIRMED*

So everyone always says the biggest hurdle the PS3 will face is trying to live up to the very tall online standards that Microsoft put in place with Xbox live (I actually think it'll be the price of the unit). XBL might be the sole reason the 360 is so successful. Who can argue that being able to download demos and videos of games to be released is not an awesome thing.

Sony says (and they say a lot of things that aren't true) that their online component will be just as east to use and feature rich as XBL. The industry and the fans has it's doubters. It has just been releases that the new Untold Legends game for the PS3 (officially called Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom) will use Viacoms Xfire online gaming platform to interface it's players in the online world.

Xfire offers one click game joins and in-game chat sessions (for most of the PC games it supports). Now granted, Sony only confirmed that their using Xfire for one game so far. But who's to say their not adopting the system to be used with the PS3 totally.

"We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game," said a spokesperson for Sony in a statement to 1Up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153547).

"However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," continued the statement."

This is a good an a bad thing... Good because Xfire is a proven online component that I would have faith in playing on my PS3... Bad because if one game uses Xfire and the other's aren't.... that means that the PS3 won't offer a centralized hub for gaming (like XBL) and instead it will opt for a let-the-developer-choose-their-onlione-fate sort of world.

Anyhow, just wanted to get you guys talking, this forum has been slow all week... No news :(

More info on Xfire can be found on their site: http://www.xfire.com/

That would blow if they used it for just one game.

I hope they have a central hub, that's one of the 360's best things.
