DETROIT (AP) -- Gary Matthews Jr. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6241) hit for the cycle -- and did it in order, too -- and the Texas Rangers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=tex) routed the Detroit Tigers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) 11-3 Wednesday night.

The Rangers roughed up Justin Verlander (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7590) and sent the AL Central-leading Tigers to their 10th loss in 15 games. Detroit leads Minnesota by 1½ games, while Chicago moved three back.

Matthews led off the game with a single, doubled in the second inning and hit a triple in the fourth. He got his cycle when he led off the sixth with a 418-foot homer to left-center. The All-Star center fielder also walked in the eighth.

Matthews became the third Rangers player to hit for the cycle. He joined Mark Teixeira (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6788) (2004) and Oddibe McDowell (1985).
