View Full Version : Best shutdown Corner in the league?

Covering WR's is an art in football and the Cornerback is surely the most under-rated and least talked about position in the game. It takes a tremendous amount of skill to run with guys like Chad Johnson, Terrell Owens and Steve Smith ect..

Deion Sanders is probably the greatest Corner to ever play the game. But now in 2006, its a pretty big debate on who the best shutdown Corner in the league is. Ronde Barber, Ty Law, Champ Bailey and DeAngelo Hall are some of the more talked about guys in the game, but I want to know everyones oppinion about who the top Corners in the league are?

With the rules all seemingly to benefit the offense I don't know if there is a shutdown corner. The best CB in the league IMO is Champ Bailey.

Champ has the most tools of any corner. By far. But I've seen him get beat or guys out playing him.

For my money, Chris McAllister, when healthy, is as much a shut down corner as any. I'd put DeAngelo Hall, Rashean Mathis and Ty Law in that company too.

Rashean Mathis. Probably the best cornerback in the league, but very underrated as he doesn't get mentioned much. He is very physical, and has shut down some of the best WR's, like Chad Johnson.

Today he will shut down Hines Ward. You will see.

Nah, the Dolphins have talent.

Any CB playing Mike Mularkey's offense is more like it.

He had quite a bit of trouble staying with TO last week.

ive always thought chris mccallister was one of the best... and ive thought bailey was overrated...

ronde is a great zone CB with that tampa 2, dont think hes that good with man coverage though...

If I was a WR, I wouldn't care who was covering me as long as I didn't have to go across the middle and meet Sean Taylor... good lord...

Best Corner - Chris Mcallister/Champ Bailey

Best secondary player - Ed Reed/Sean Taylor

Best corner - Champ Bailey, Dre Bly, or Reggie Howard....

Not necessarily in that order.

exactly! he layed a vicious hit out last night in the dallas game... can't remember who he hit now though... here's a sample of some of his work. it'd be nice to have a guy like him in our secondary...

back onto topic, i'd have to go w/mcallister. i live outside baltimore so i get to see him play every week. when the announcers do call his name it's usually for a batted down ball or a pick. and when he does make a pick he always gets good yardage if not a td in return. can't really speak for the rest except bailey when i saw him play for d.c., even though that was awhile ago and i have a pretty bad memory, i seem to remember hearing bailey get called for pass interferance quite a bit.

he didn't shutdown ward like you said he would, but he played very well. ;)

ward had 2 catches for 29 yards....thats a pro bowl top 5 receiver, and that's good enough for me

p.s. Someone mentioned Reed and Taylor :rawk:....behind Urlacher, my 2 favorite players in the NFL....dudes are too nasty to put at corner because they'd ruin the nfl's pass-happy policies

sean taylor is overrated as hell. he gets beat so easily and bites on the run way too often.

this is from someone who said he was the greatest safety ever coming out of college, too.

I agree with the cornerbacks and Reed but no way is Taylor better than Polamalu. Overall I think Reed is the best secondary player in the league.

sean taylor isn't in polamalu's league. taylor is a heavy hitter but gets beat on every single deep ball.

I would agree with that. Guy has some weels on him and can cover like white on rice.

Chris McAllister easy!

He walks the walk and talks the talk.

There really is a dropoff after that, I think.

chris mcalister and champ= top 2 corners
champs gambles a bit and gets burned but he shutdown chris chambers last year.

also deangelo hall is so fast and looks athletically gifted did you see the srpings on that guy when he intercepted that ball looked a little bit like deion.
but yea deangelo is good but he can be great but hes not great yet, he gots deion teaching him ,wow.

rahseen is good but for some reason he always has trouble vs marvin.
nathan vasher is good.
