View Full Version : Could we pass on CJ if he's sitting there?!

Realistically, we are looking at a top 5 pick. Even if we start playing mildly better, top 8 at worst. With the teams that will be picking high, with the exception of Green Bay, I don't see any of them taking Calvin Johnson because of Adrian Peterson and Brady Quinn being there among others. If CJ is sitting there, I don't see how we could possibly pass on him. It feels like we're stacked at receiver, yet we never have huge receiver play that makes an impact in a game with the exception of a few Chambers performances last year. So, despite Hagan, Chambers, and Booker, I think you have to take CJ if he's there. The guy is a freak. What do you think? Or, conversely...if we wind up with, say the 3rd pick, with Oakland and GB ahead of us, I don't see any way that Oakland passes on Peterson and Green Bay passes on CJ...so is Quinn is sitting there, do we take him? Personally, I think Quinn is overrated at this point, and will be a decent pro QB with a long career, but never a star.

If CJ is available and Joe Thomas is gone or we dont think he will pan out we should jump all of Johnson imo.

I don't want to have to remember the day we passed on CJ. Check out these You-Tube links.

Calvin Johnson is a terrific player and person, but we have far more pressing needs than WR. If he's on the board, we ought to use his presence there to trade down and get the picks and players to fill several of our roster holes. If we can't get a good trade down package, then we have to take him and try to turn Chambers or Booker into a left tackle.

If CJ is there, we HAVE to take him. The guy has everything you want in a reciever and then some.

That is a possibility, but we would have to consider him. Maybe use him as trade bait for a LT

There are two players we cant pass on if they are there. They are need palyers and IMO I dont think they're capable of failing to live up to the hype

CJ and Brohm. Brohm #1, CJ #2

I'm absolutely sold on CJ, not so much on Brohm that I think we cant pass on him. Especially since I think we have our QB already on the roster.

unless Joe Thomas is still there or Alan Branch comes out (most scouts believe he is a top 10 lock right now, and could go top 5), I'd take CJ.

Alan Branch is going to be a stud DT as well. 6'6, 330 LBs, can't run around him, great football IQ, pass rushing skills. Probably the best DT prospect to come around in awhile.

I know you are a big fan of Thomas, but are you saying that if CJ is available we should pick him. Or are you saying we shouldn't, and should pick Thomas if he is available?

Last time i checked.. We had more pressing issues than at WR. Maybe we could use his availablity as trade bait, but i think we need to address our OL, secondary and LB's first.

This draft is very deep in OL though, not including underclassmen.

I have a sneaking suspicion we will pick the best player available, regardless of need. Draft talk already........................this is going to be a loooong 10 weeks.:fire:

He's a RARE talent. You don't pass on those regardless. Just because the Cardinals had Boldin didn't make them take someone besides Fitzgerald, also a very rare talent.

But honestly, CJ appears to be a bit more talented than Fitz.

1. best player available
or
2. trade down and draft a lineman. However, if our line shows improvement once again... we'll hold off on the OL.

If he's there, you take him. Enough said.

You can get an OT like Arron Sears in Round 2. But, if you have someone explosive like CJ, you HAVE to take him.

I agree with most on here. I am tired, sick and tired of drafting for need. Just get the BEST player available, thats it. I dont care who he is or if we have vets at that position already. If you know the guy can play, and play GREAT, get him.

Wait until his pre-draft workouts. Yes, the guy is good but is he really fast. He's big and has great hands, but that's what was said about Mike Williams.
The guy weighs 235 lbs, does that affect his quickness.
He sounds a lot like David Boston, but with more focus and maturity.

his coaches say he's a 4.3 guy. but i guess more like 4.4.

You don't draft OL in the top 10. This years draft especially is deep and we will be able to get some good picks in the middle rounds that could help our team immediately. I would think we are going to try to get as many picks as we can this year through trades and whatnot.

Top 10 imo is reserved for position players, Passing on a guy like CJ is something a franchise could regret for years. However, if a stud LB or DE is on the board, thats something to think about.

Perhaps not the top 10. But that particular thinking, applied to the entire first round, is exactly what has brought our o-line to where it is today. I'd rather see us trade down and get a can't miss O-lineman in the mid- or later-first round, and get extra picks we could use later in the draft.

No you can't pass on him unless Joe Thomas is available and Saban and Co. have him rated higher. For all you talking about needs, if we're in a position for him, which is top 5. You don't draft for need that high, BPA.

@ 3-5 (assuming we dont trade down)....OL all the way...Thomas or Baker. No way we finish with 1st or 2nd Overall pick. So I dont think CJ is there.

Now, spin it this way......right now he is viewed as #1 Talent....but if he starts to slip and we are sitting at #3 - #5 you would have to question what is/has caused him to slip and decide if he is truely BPA at that moment in time.

At this point in time last year, who wouldnt have told you, you were crazy for having Leinart at #10!!!!

In case any of you aren't watching ESPN tonight, there are six minutes left in the Georgia Tech/Clemson game. Calvin Johnson has ZERO catches and MINUS-FOUR rushing yards.

LOVE THAT CHAN GAILEY OFFENSE!!!

Have you seen who GT's QB is? It's not CJ's fault he isn't getting the ball.

I mean, JR Tolver had tons of yards and receptions his senior year. Doesn't mean he's a good pro-prospect.

I was thinking about this today. I'm torn. If we're in a position where Thomas and Johnson are both still on the board, it would be a very tough call. On one hand, I'm fed up with Chambers' disappearing act 95% of the time, but on the other hand, we've been saying things like "How's he supposed to throw behind this line?" about our quarterbacks for the last 10 years it seems. If they're both there, I think I'd take Thomas, but I'd be THRILLED with either one.

While we need a franchise LT, you have to go BPA. Look how drafting for need has hurt us in years past. Besides, look what happened the texans.
