The Chicago Cubs (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=chn)' ownership is showing new manager Lou Piniella that they are serious about winning.
Chicago radio station ESPN 1000 reported Sunday that the Cubs have agreed to an eight-year contract worth approximately $136 million with outfielder Alfonso Soriano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6154).

...for a 30 year old player.

If anyone is worth it he is.

He will hit a ton of home runs in that ballpark

question is will he play 2B or LF?

He wants to play 2B, but he and Cedeno would probably be the worst defensive combo in the majors.

Pinella is in a perfect situation......and getting key assets 40/40 Soriano (OF or 2B I wonder?).

Cubs just need healthy arms and Lee back at 1B...but getting another bat in Soriano is big time addition to that lineup.

well that's depressing to hear...........being an Angel fan.

A "young" 30. Soriano keeps himself in great shape.

Anyways, he deserves this type of money. In that ballpark, wouldn't be surprised if he hits 60 homeruns.

CF??? I am sorry, he may have got away with LF last year (and could be ok at it again), and he has proven to be serviceable at 2B (as long as you accept some laps moments).

But CF? No way, he has not shown to have that type of talent to be a CF in my eyes.

Are they trading Pierre?

Hey don't kill the messenger. All I heard was is that Soriano is going to be in CF (Murton in LF, Jones in RF) and would probably bat lead off.

He has the speed and arm to play CF. Whether he can learn the position well we'll have to see.

We didn't want Sorry-ano anyway....we will just sign up Sammy "Corky" Sosa. He can play Center, move Rowand to Burrell's spot, and we are good to go.

If they're smart, they'll play Soriano in left, move Murton to right, trade Jones, and let Felix Pie come up to the bigs.

I think if they could trade Jones they would.

Soriano in CF? Man, that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. He was surprisingly good in LF, but CF is a whole different beast.

:yeahthat:
, funny, and last year he whined about moving to LF, now hes got huge $$$ and suddenly its hey, he can be a CF. (personally, for Fantasy BB reasons, I hope he gets 15 games at 2B, lol)

Yes, he has speed and solid arm (less accurate than most), but CF in MLB is a whole different animal.

Maybe he will prove me wrong, but CF in Wrigley, with the wind and all? Wow, I think he would have a full-time learning curve just trying to play LF in that wind.

P.S. They signed DeRosa to possible play 2B. Why wouldnt they resign Pierre, with his solid D, and have a killer top of the order to go with deeper hitting lineup?

Honestly, I forgot about the wind at Wrigley and how hard that would make a CF's job. Holy cow, we've moved beyond "disaster in CF" to "all-time epic blunder". They're going to be looking for a new position for him by the all-star break.

JP is gone to LA LA Land for 5yrs $45M so I guess he may get that shot in CF.

 yeah, it could be a horrible experiment. If it affects his hitting because he is stressed over his OF play then shame on the Cubs for not thinking clearly when this could have been a great move along with keeping JP. If thats how it turns out, then I think the goat-curse is legit.

Alfonso was my favorite player for the Nats but hey, if I happen to be at the Cubs game at RFK, he will be getting a hardy and hefty amount of booing from me.

Greedy little SOB. Go ahead and join the Cubs, You thought the Nats sucked? Just wait

Yea, Shame on Soriano for taking a huge contract that someone offered him. He should have given up like 70 mil to stay with the Nationals. Insane, I mean give me a break.

No-one THINKS the Nats suck. Its pretty much a fact.

They dont have the players to compete with New York now, or Florida in the future and probally even right now. Philli is ahead of them and Atlanta will win some games

Washington without Soriano = Last in NL East

Yeah I totally would have given the nats a hometown discount if I were Soriano.

I really bonded with the city my whole one year I was there.
