49ers waive QB Cade McNown

May 17, 2003
SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Quarterback Cade McNown, the 12th overall pick in the 1999 draft who has not played the last two seasons, on Saturday was waived by the San Francisco 49ers.

McNown was acquired from the Miami Dolphins last June for a conditional pick in the 2003 draft and did not appear in any games with San Francisco last season.

The 6-1, 210-pound McNown played in 16 games, starting six, as a rookie with the Chicago Bears in 1999. He completed 127-of-235 passes for 1,465 yards and eight touchdowns with 10 interceptions. The following season he completed 154-of-280 passes for 1,646 yards and eight TDs with nine interceptions.

McNown missed six games in his second year with a shoulder injury and was traded to Miami before the 2001 season. He was Miami's third quarterback for all 16 games in the 2001 season.

The 26-year-old McNown was a four-year starter at UCLA, where he ended his career ranked first in Pac-10 history in total offense with 11,285 yards.

Without McNown, Brandon Doman and rookie Ken Dorsey are expected to battle for the third quarterback spot with San Francisco.
