I remember him being quick but was brought down easily. We drafted him, possibly the first round but how long was he on the team? I can really only remember him being on the team for one year, did we give him much more of a chance after that?

Why Avery? Why now? I just can't do it. Come back at me after the playoffs.

Quick and Fast.. Small 5' 9'' 190 Lbs, out of Mississippi..
We had him about two years..
He was supposed to be a starting RB, but of course it didn't
work out...
Then JJ tried him as a third down back.. He flopped..
Was later released and picked up by the Broncos.
They actually tried to use him as a WR... He flopped again..
I guess he is a Viking now.. That is if the link isn't old...

Actually we traded him to the Broncos in 1999 for WR Marcus Nash. He was small and quick, but had poor field vision. I believe he's out of the NFL and is playing in the CFL now.

He was playing in the CFL as recently as this year(on the same team as Ricky I thought). I think he may have been the CFL's leading rusher in the 2005 season. I remember I had such high hopes for him. I was sure he'd be what we were looking for as a real threat in the backfield. A change from K-AJ, not that he wasn't a nice back, he just wasn't the franchise back you want. There was one play in the preseason, a punt return I think, Avery took it like 77 yards weaving all across the field. It was so great to see such a thing in Miami. Then the regular season came, and a long with it, broken dreams and mediocrety. It was a sad day in the off season of his second year, that I realized he'd never be what I had hoped. Just another name on the list of tailbacks that didn't work out for us.

Biggest bust nect to Ryan Leaf.

lol, not even close. Not even the biggest RB bust of the 90's.

For the Dolphins it was.
Avery is the RB JJ put all his cards in for finally getting a RB to compliment Marino. Yet again the team failed miserably and wasted a 1st rounder when clearly many better graded players were available.

Only bigger dissapointment and bust was Sammy Smith.

See 2 posts above for what I thought about him. I agree with you, but to say he was the biggest bust next to Ryan Leaf is just laughable.

John Avery will in my book always live in infamy because that year we traded down one spot with Minnesota who inturn drafted Randy Moss, next pick we took Avery:shakeno:

Sadly, yes, the biggest play of his career came in a preseason game against the 49ers -- off left tackle. Even more sadly, it was against the 49er backups...

he plays for the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL... Yes that is also where Ricky was this year.

I am pretty sure he plays in the CFL and with his size you would expect him to be a flop because NFL running backs need to be bigger.
