The University of Miami has a new head football coach.
UM defensive coordinator Randy Shannon accepted the position Thursday, according to a well-placed university source.
An announcement by UM is scheduled for Friday.
Shannon, 40, a Miami native, becomes only the sixth black head coach in Division I football. He replaces Larry Coker, who was fired last month after six seasons.
Shannon graduated from Norland High and then UM in 1989. He was a member of the 1987 Hurricanes national championship team and an 11th-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Shannon was a Miami Dolphins defensive assistant in 1998 and 1999 before becoming Miami's linebackers coach in 2000.

Just not excited by this.

Shannon was just as guilty of not making in game adjustments as the Cane offensive coaches were.
Shannon was part of the absolute mess the program became.

I really felt they needed to go outside and infuse some new blood here to really turn over a new leaf.

Hope it works out well but I can't help feeling this is exactly what Shalalala and the admin. wants. Just pass it off to someone they can get off on the cheaps with and continue to devalue the program.

I had held out hope when they "seemed" to go into this coaching search with aggression but I can't help but feel it was all smoke and mirrors. Everything my booster friends predicted happening has in fact happened.

I hope Shannon does great but I'm just not optimistic.

Come on man the defense was 12th ranked in points allowed, and kept us in so many games. They played well enough to go undefeated.

Actually 1 loss. They didnt play well vs Louisville on the second half but other than that they were great most of the year.

I dont see how anyone could have a problem with Shannon

he wasn't that good at recruiting, why do you think guys were leaving Miami for FSU or Florida? trust me Coker was horrible at it, his coaching was the bigger problem though. just look at the numbers, Miami has dropped way down in the recuiting department. we are outside of the top 10 recuiters for the first time in a while

Because the program was already overflowing with talent, and florida was making it's way back up towards contention.

I would only be concerned if my team were regularly below the top 25. Just like the NFL draft, not everyone pans out, nor is it fair to expect them all to.

well Florida is getting so much better at recruting lately because of coach Meyer, yes they do have players who just wanted to play for the school but Meyer is getting better recruits because of him. same with Bobby Bowden, FSU is so worried that after Bowden stops coaching they will lose many recruits. so yes the University drags in players by itself but a coach can also sway just as many recruits. why do you think the #1 QB in the nation went to Notre Dame?

Man the guy just presents himself as the perfect type of coach we need here at UM.

He IMO was easily the best choice for this program. Maybe . . and I mean maybe he wouldn't get some of the out of state recruits that a successful head coach like Schiano or Butch Davis would have gotten . . . but NOBODY . . and I mean NOBODY would have came in and had the success recruiting here in South Florida like Shannon will have.

Now we just need to get a solid OFfensive Coordinator and this team will be back on the right track for sure.

anyone hear of any possible choices for our offensive coordinator.

since shannon is only getting a million a year, the U has money to spend to get a highly regarded new OC for us.

Was promoting Randy Shannon from within the way to go for Miami? (Luis M. Alvarez / Associated Press)

I know I'm supposed to hail Miami's hiring of Randy Shannon as some shrewd move or cosmic shift in the future fortunes of the 'Canes program, because that's what everyone's been telling me to think since the coach was promoted from defensive coordinator a couple of days ago.

That's what I'm supposed to think, but that's just not what's going through my mind right now.

Miami, suffering through a historical low point on and off the field, desperately needed to whack a home run with Larry Coker's successor, but instead hit a bloop single after getting snubbed by a who's who of coaches because of a lack of funds, a lack of interest or both.

Rule No. 1 in tabbing a head coach: Hiring from within is only a good idea if the program is currently hitting a high note. If it's hemorrhaging, you've got to get a fresh start with fresh ideas by looking outside the family. Now, that's not to suggest that Shannon was part of the problem. Au contraire. He's well-liked and a gifted recruiter and defensive coordinator, who's earned his shot to be a head coach, but didn't Miami just go down this same familial road with a guy ... what his name? Larry Coker.

At a time when the program had to make a splash with its next head coach, it gingerly dipped its toe into the shallow end of the water. It got cheap and conservative, landing a coordinator with no head coaching experience and, more importantly, a man who's too familiar with the warts and current players in Coral Gables. What Miami needed was an outsider, a strong disciplinarian with zero allegiance to any current member of the program — an every-job-is-up-for-grabs type character.

When it was announced that Shannon was the guy, 'Canes players openly applauded the decision, mugging it up with the new boss and finding it hard to contain their enthusiasm. Call me old-fashioned, but isn't it a potentially ominous sign when players are that excited about the hiring of a new head coach? Shouldn't there be some trepidation about the new sheriff in town?

Only time will tell if Miami traded up with the promotion of Shannon to head coach. For now, I'll remain very skeptical about the direction of this program, despite all the propaganda that's presently being jammed down my throat.

Should be very interesting to see how well he does and how much support he gets next season.

You make it sound like that is so easy to do. LOL. I just don't see that happening. They asked Shannon this morning about the teams offensive woes and what he is going to do to try to fix it... His answer was "I have not even thought about it yet..." Something about focusing on the Nevada game and recruiting. Which I think is good, but seriously, NOT EVEN THOUGHT about it? Seriously? That was the programs' BIGGEST problem and you did not even think about it? :shakeno: Yikes.

I'm sure thats true, but you have to admit he will be under the microscope and any mistakes he makes will be magnified. Hope he does well, looking forward to that 2008 matchup.

Motion - that AP article you posted, is just that - an article by a guy who doesn't live in Miami, doesn't know a thing about the U.

Real fans of the U, alumni of the U, students of the U know that not only was Randy Shannon the right man for the job, he was the only man.

guess that was a little dramatic - but I'm real pleased with Shannon being the next coach.

I didn't say anything different. I don't know much about Shannon, hence why I said it will be interesting to see how well he does. Trust me I know all about the media bashing coaches. :D

I wasn't saying anything about you - just saying I didn't like that article and the guy who wrote it.

You should also know a thing or two about the coaches using the media to get to the national title game too.

according to the messed up BCS system, but there really needs to be a playoff system. I understand why it's not used but in Div AA they have playoffs, this would eliminate the imposters

Actually according to all the polls, not just the BCS.

I surely hope your not implying that Florida is an "imposter".

not exactly, I think Florida is in the top 3 or 4 in the nation but not the top 2. I don't think they can hang with the Buckeyes although we will see

Guess we'll find out on Jan 8th.

Florida beating Ohio State would give them the national championship (and that's all that matters) - but it most definitely would not prove that they have the best team in the country.

Sometimes the best team in the country doesn't win the national championship - see 2000, 2002, and whatever year Auburn went undefeated.

Bottom line is college football needs a playoff badly.
