This years superbowl had the WORST superbowl commercials ever. The only one I found even mildly entertaining was the one with the snickers and the two guys kissing. Seriously anyone agree that this year flat out sucked?

did anyone else notice that most of the commercials were for cbs shows and such? they must had trouble selling the airtime. i wasnt really interseted in the game, and the commercials made it worse.

The Bud Light "rock, scissors, paper" ad was the funniest commercial I've ever seen.

The only one I really laughed at is the "Slap" one - where one guy was told the fist bump was out. And he asked what was in. And got the **** slapped out of him....that was the only one that was funny.

That one was kind of funny, but overall I expect much more than just one or two small laughs over the course of the entire superbowl.

hated that one.... nothing against gay guys.....but we dont need any more homosexual "promotion" ....dont know just ticked me off :fire: ... since a lot of kids are watching and explaining that it was a joke doesnt always fly.

just think it was too much for a snikers commercial... actually for any commercial it wasnt needed.... or funny.

other than that commercials blew.... mencia's was decent and the one where the guy got a stone thrown at him.

The white dog that got dirtied up to look like a dalmation was funny....I don't really care too much about the commercials...I was sucking down beer and wings. I didn't really care who won the game either.

Well back when MTV was producing the halftime show (until the Janet Jackson Tittigate scandal), it always had "current" acts....and it still sucked. In fact it sucked even more.

Every year it's the same thing, people complain about the halftime show. When has it ever been good? I mean seriously.

I'm guessing you've never heard live instrumentation before.

There is no way the guitar was recorded, mostly because it was obvious it was coming out of an amplifier, and had the feedback, incidental noise, and raw sound of a live guitar.

Being someone that played the guitar for 7 years, I can assure you he was playing.

What a silly comment.

Calling Prince an "80's" artist is ridiculous since the man has charted hits in THREE SEPARATE DECADES...well, maybe 4, I don't know if any of his 2000-onward material has hit the charts.

Some of you clearly have no perspective or knowledge of music.

Metal Panda
02-06-2007, 07:37 PM

Ever consider the fact that you're completely wrong?

I'm the king of spotting pre-recorded music. I snuffed out that two bands I saw at a free live concert in Orlando once were lip synching and/or mocking playing before it became obvious to everybody else.

Pre-recorded music sounds too clean, not all that noisy, not all that crunchy, and sounds canned.

Prince's guitar was crunchy, noisy, was clearly coming out of an amplifier, and was not "canned", not to mention there was a lot of the incidental noise associated with live guitar.

there may have been a second guitar player as well, but I can't remember...would make sense to have a second to double while he played leads.

Alex44

Every Super Bowl is typically medleys. You get what, 15 minutes to perform? That means you either play 2-3 songs, or you play 6-7 snippets.

His voice sounded great. That WAS Prince. He wasn't like some artists who deteriorate over time. His guitar sounded great too. Guess some of you forgot guitar was an integral part of Prince's music. It's him who plays the guitar solo at the opening of When Doves Cry yo!

Haha, how exactly would they have pre-recorded some of it? I mean yea there's a possibility of click track if you have instruments/backing singers you couldn't bring with you, but other than that....gimme a break.

Some of you have no idea what live music sounds like apparently.

Actually I hate Nickleback and I do enjoy some 80's bands. The fact is that he didnt sound good at all. I have heard live music, Ive been to concerts and guess what...they all sounded better than that.

How would they do it? I don't know but bands do it all the time so it wouldn't surprise me. (I didnt say it was prerecorded either, I said some parts looked like it)

In 15 minutes I'd rather have heard 3 or 4 full or at least nearly full songs than 30 seconds of each.

Overall I respect Prince as an artist, but come on he was horrible at halftime.

In 15 minutes I'd rather have heard 3 or 4 full or at least nearly full songs than 30 seconds of each.

Overall I respect Prince as an artist, but come on he was horrible at halftime.

most bands get quite a bit of time for soundchecks before a show - during halftime, they set up the stage, instruments, monitors etc in what, under 5 minutes? - in the pouring rain! it's sad to hear someone so young complain as much as you do, alex - go outside and play!

I thougt prince sounded pretty good. He's a very underrated guitar player and he nailed that solo on purple rain I thought. But then again I was blitzed out of my mind.

If anyone has a recording of the game go and watch the halftime show it is obvious he barely plays it if at all and everyone at my house noticed it.

Have you ever thought of the fact that the reason it sounded so noisey and crunchy is because of the wind driven rain and the volume for the music being way too loud.

i thought there were a LOT of great commercials... .not EVERY commercial will be golden guys.

the KFed was great, the Bud commercials were all funny (except for the gorilla one), the Sierra Mist with the combover beard was funny, the Fedex with Eileen and Bob, the GM commercials weren't funny but good, the robot commercial WAS funny, the Evergreen Nuts with Robert Goulier was HILARIOUS, i just think there was a bunch of good ones.

The Coke one SUCKED (its a rerun for starters, and its a stupid premise on a tired idea), the Honda CR-V one shouldn't have even been allowed, and all the damn promos for CBS shows were ridiculous.

oh, and i did NOT like the snickers commercial. not funny, just weird and ghey.

i'm not going to make an argument one way or another about the prince halftime show other than the fact that i did not enjoy it....

BUT it did seem like there were sounds coming out of his guitar when his hands were not anywhere near the strings.... which is weird.

I don't know if this commercial was mentioned, but its worth mentioning twice its so bad....It was so bad I thought it was a joke....but it wasnt, they were serious. The one where the cheesy sales rep pulls up in a Ferrari Spyder, and the bad actress is like, "hey Bob, nice car!" and bobs like, "hey Jim,lets go hit the links",and jim's like, "i cant bob, i have too many clients to call, i cant hit my quota, how do you do it???" and then he reveals the ripoff website offering sales leads. it was the worst production and overallperformance i ever seen on regular tv, let alone the superbowl. that cheesy company should be embarrassed.

I'd save face and admit you are wrong now. I'd have been the first to admit if he wasn't playing, because I am a musician and could easily hear that. oh and see it too. Did you just recently become The Fly or something, cuz I don't know what you were seeing.

Dude...just...stop.

apparently you think you've found the Pandora's box, and you don't realize that anybody on this board who has ever picked up a guitar is laughing at you profusely.

I know exactly the moments that you and 1 or 2 others on this board are talking about. Moments where Prince removed his right hand from the guitar and...*gasp*...sounds were STILL OMITTING!

See, this is a little technique known as "hammering". IE, he was playing the leads with his left hand without picking. Hammering=repeated alternation between 2 or more notes, and is typically done with the left hand only and does not require picking. This is why at times to the untrained eye, or to someone who isn't familiar with guitar playing, it looked like he wasn't playing. But in reality he was fingering the leads with his left hand. Believe me, I have watched the halftime show multiple times...I was actually curious on a few of the fingerings myself just because I used to play.

I own 9 Prince albums, including the one Let's Go Crazy, his opener, is on. It was clearly not the studio version played over the loudspeaker. so you're intimating that Prince decided to waste time in a studio recording a "live version" of a song that would have taken less energy to play live.

You'd have to be wrong.

I have never been a fan of Prince. Ever. Never owned an album by him, nor have I ever thought to pick one up. When I heard Prince was going to be the halftime entertainment, I thought: "Wow, do they even try to get anyone decent anymore?" :D

When I saw the show, however, I loved it. I thought Prince put on the best halftime show I've seen in at least 5 years. He blew me away.

I may have to check out some of his albums now... Wouldn't be surprised if there's nothing on them to interest me further, but what I saw during the halftime show has piqued my interest.

there is no band associated with football, but when you think of football, you think of all things american - beer, muscle cars, guys being macho. these are all crude stereotypes, but why not feed off of that and have a rock band? i mean when is the last time they had a rock band? the year they had aerosmith split duties with britney spears and nsync? they keep going pop... at least prince was a departure from the normal crap they have.

heck, i would have liked to hear Hank Williams do the "ready for some football" song followed by a medley of classic country rock or what have you... but hey, at least they didn't have Pink. Her Sunday night football song was horrible

my next door neighbor dragged me out to see a bluegrass band last week - i hate bluegrass but they were all kickash musicians and it turned out to be a great show
this proves a different point - and not one i was trying to make, but will concede - that it isn't necessarily the type of music, but how good the show. i don't think the Prince show was that good of a show. i'm not attacking his guitar playing abilities, or his voice, or anything in particular. i just didn't like it. the song choices, the rendition of it live, the effects and displays.... call me negative or whatever you want, i just didn't like it.

i never accused him of faking it, i never said it was pre-recorded. i just said i don't like it.

so sue me.

Intertesting thought....except for the fact that the climate of the NFL these days pretty much demands anything but a rock band.

If you wanted something to reflect the NFL - in today's society - you'd need a rap performer. Most of the times I see something pertaining to football, there's rap music in the background.

We can only hope they never do though.

actually i am not that much of a hip hop fan, but it would be nice to see the NFL stray from the usual pop performers. i would like to see a remake of a collaboration - metal and hip hop. That would certainly be racy, but it would be great. What are some other past attempts? Anthrax and Public Enemy? Bodycount?
