I liked the two Transporter movies with Jason Statham.....most of the critics kind of dismissed the movies, but I like action movies and both of the movies were fun to watch. I also saw the movie Crank which was also kind of an action movie and comedy in some parts. I was hoping Jason Statham would become the new James Bond.

Not my favorite, but I really like Carlito's Way. I think it mops the floor with the overrated Scarface.

Unlike the excessive and cartoonish Scarface (which I still like, mind you), De Palma showed a lot of restraint and created a somewhat sympathetic character in Carlito Brigante...a guy who amidst his years of crime and wrongdoings also carried a lot of sadness with him and had a genuine desire to quit.

The ambience was really good too.

I don't know maybe because I was like 11 when I first saw it so it holds a special place for me. I agree seeing it when you're older you see some silly spots here and there but I think as a whole and on sheer entertainment it still holds up so In my opinion it isn't overrated.

How is Scarface catoonish..?

The fact that all of the characters are cardboard and one-dimensional and that Tony Montana's written and portrayed way over the top, the fact that there's a new one-liner every 3 minutes of the movie that is quoted hourly by fans, the fact that the movie doesn't really have much content outside of mindless action and violence (granted that's one of its allures though)...

It isn't like many of the other organized crime films that had some depth.

IT's a good popcorn flick but can't hold a candle to others of the genre.

Very true. There is no good reason for Scarface to be three hours long. Tony Montana's rise to power isn't really given much more than a glossover in terms of the time it takes to occur, and his fall from grace is done so rapidly without a real good explanation, you wonder why we were sitting there 180 minutes.

Masters of the Universe- Yes a live action He-Man movie that seemed more like Star Wars, but still the actors that play He-Man and Skeletor are DEAD on. Again not the best movie but still growing up watching He-man and renting this on VHS 10204 times when I was growing up it holds a special place in my heart.

Super Troopers- very funny movie, although consist quoting of it by my friends have killed the movie for me a bit.

My Blue Heaven- A GREAT GREAT funny movie and it is kind of the unofficial loosey based sequel to Goodfellas as the movie is based on Henry Hill's life after the mob.

My Cousin Vinny- another great comedy that doesn't get talked about in my opinion.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: another good movie that gets overlooked in my opinion.

i have 2 small complaints.
1. a few of us are using blockbuster hits as the "underrated" example.
2. Some some of us didn't like very creative and innovative indy flicks, but we should keep in mind, if you didn't see it until after the hype, and after everyone else already declared it a suprisingly good movie, you're probably gonna set yourself up for a let down.

Snakes on a Plane. I rented it for the hell of it and it was better then I thought it would be..granted I had really low expectations. It was rather humurous watching snakes kill people by the teet and p33n.

I saw the opening in the theater and it was the most fun I've ever had watching a movie. I felt like I was watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Two movies come to mind for me:

Psycho Beach Party - I hardly ever see this on movie channels and I NEVER see it in movie stores. It's friggin' hilarious.

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka - This movie is also extremely funny. Early Wayans brothers flick that spoofs blaxploitation.

Everyone likes a movie that nobody else has seen. For me its The Count of Monte Cristo with Guy Pearce, what's yours?

http://imdb.com/title/tt0245844/

I remember when it was in the theaters - I saw it by accident! Great movie.

But for me, as an underrated film, I'd go with:

Paid In Full
http://imdb.com/title/tt0259484/
Wood Harris & Mekhi Phifer were SPECTACULAR, and Cam'Ron believe it or not was decent. I'm still surprised that he didn't ruin that movie. He had a lot of movie critics giving him praise for his performance. Wood Harris was great though; he and Phifer are two of the most underrated actors out there. Wood Harris was basically an unknown until HBO's The Wire. Aside from The Wire, his only big time success = Remember The Titans.

How exactly is Anchorman "underrated"? it did decent at the box office and every moron on the planet quotes the damn thing.

It was funny precisely once, but it is not good for repeat viewings.

I tried watching it for free on Comcast On Demand like 2-3 during the Holidays.

I'm semi-with you on that. I find Will Ferrell to have potential, but I find a lot of what he's done to be unfunny dreck.

However, I REALLY enjoyed him in Stranger than Fiction, because for once he wasn't an over the top idiot, he played the part very straightforward and was convincing.

i beg to differ!

actually it underperformed at the box office, which is why i thought it fit here. Granted, its success has grown kind of under the radar after it was released on DVD, but when it came out, it was considered a "bad movie".

While your circle of friends might have seen it a million times and quote it, if you ask anyone adult over age 30, chances are they probably haven't seen it. You have a few exceptions, but most haven't.

it failed relative to expectations, never sat multiple weeks in the top 5, and it failed compared to the other movies out at the time in the theaters.

sure, you can quote the gross revenues from its entire run, then compare it to movies made 15 and 25 years ago and discount inflation and make it seem like a blockbuster, but it wasn't.

its biggest success has come in DVD sales, long after it was out in movie theaters...

Anchorman

Most Overrated:*
Reservoir Dogs, Clerks

*and by "overrated" i mean people talk them up like they are great, but they are boring!
Man, I this reminds me of when kids proclaim "opposite day".
I LOVED Clerks and Reservoir Dogs. Nothing boring for me, at all. Clerks isn't about something happening, physically. It's about the non-stop banter and hilarious dialog. Not really a one liner movie. I don't know, but I'd watch either of those movies yet again, at the drop of a hat.

The premise of the thread was movies that not many have seen. I feel like anyone I've talked to has seen Anchorman. Even the guys on ESPN radio quote it all the time.

Here's a couple underrated for me:
Memento - such an original movie that had me completely enthralled.
Empire of the Sun - It was highly acclaimed, but I'd bet most people under 30 haven't seen this. It stars a very young Christian Bale, and is just an outstanding movie.

Here are a couple of mine:

Series 7: The Contenders
http://www.finheaven.com/images/imported/2007/02/moviethecontenders-1.jpg

A DARK comedy take on reality TV game shows. It's about a show in which people are gathered at random and against their will (through a government sanctioned "lottery" system) to perform on a reality game show. The goal? kill the other remaining contestants. What's great about the movie is that it's shot on video and looks like you're watching 3 back to back episodes of the show. What's scary is that it came out in 2000...right when the whole reality TV thing was just starting to hit...and how prophetic this movie was. Also it's quite funny...the last line in the movie is a killer.

...And God Spoke
http://www.finheaven.com/images/imported/2007/02/andgodspoke-1.jpg

I have yet to meet anybody who has actually seen this film, it's a shame because it's quite funny. It's one of those "mockumentary" films about a VERY Jewish Producer/Director team who decide to make a movie about the Bible. If you like those Christopher Guest movies, then you should like this as well. It's funny especially if you're a movie buff.

My name is Trinity

Trinity is still my name

Man from the East

Three of the funniest spaggetti westerns you have ever seen. Starring Bud Spencer and Terrance Hill.

Some of you may have seen a clip from Trinity is still my name on a commercial that is running currently. I forget who sponsered the commercial but is the one, where the cowboy and gunslinger are standing at the bar,the gunslinger draws down on the cowboy, before the gunslingers pistol clears his holster the cowboy reaches out and slaps the gunslinger, then pulls his pistol, twurls it a few times, slaps the gunslinger again and then returns his pistol to his holster. Then repeats this three or four times before he decides to just knock the gunslinger out with his fist. Absolute awful acting by Terrance Hill (trinity) and Bud Spencer, Trinities brother (Bambino). A lot of burping, farting, booger rolling and thumping, and poking fun at estabilished values of the time (early 70s). Anyone with just a touch of appreciation for black hearted humor will love these movies.
