Virtua Tennis Online on Xbox 360 Only

Sega put another dagger in the PlayStation 3 this week revealing that Virtua Tennis fans looking for the best experience in the next generation will find that only on the Xbox 360.

The company said that Virtua Tennis 3 would be the first Xbox 360 game playable in 1080p - so-called Full HD. The game was already revealed to be one of the first 1080p games on the PS3.

A bigger blow is that only Xbox 360 players will be able to take Virtua Tennis 3 online. While PS3 owners will have to settle for playing in their homes only, Xbox 360 owners will find a full Xbox Live experience including singles and doubles ranked and unranked matches.

Also exclusive to the Xbox 360 is VT: TV - an online spectator mode where you can watch other players duke it out.

P L E A S E V I S I T O U R S P O N S O R :

"We're thrilled to be able to say that Virtua Tennis 3 will be coming to Xbox 360, showcasing an online experience with Xbox Live that you won't find on any other systems and spectacular 1080p graphics," said Microsoft's George Peckham.

The announcement is just the latest disappointment for the PS3, which has seen previously exclusive games flock to the Xbox 360. Speculation last year put the blame for the lack of exclusives on the PS3 at the feet of Ken Kutaragi, who reportedly had been slow to negotiate with third-party game makers.

Yeah, that's what I said... UNTIL playing Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast with four players. You'd be amazed at how much fun -and trash-talking you can have with a tennis game.

Top Spin on the Xbox was good (with a very deep create-a-player mode and online play) while Top Spin 2 on the 360 is the most sim tennis game (still good but arcade tennis is better).

I may have to get Virtua Tennis 3 also. The spectator mode should be STANDARD for sports games. Who wouldn't want to watch games in an online league you're part of? Online play is good, spectator mode takes it to the next level.

Not having online play for the PS3? Well, you get what you pay for. MS has made it very easy for developers to take games online, while Sony expects each developer to take care of it themselves. You'll see this trend continue with multi-console games in the future too.

Virtua Tennis is actually not the first 360 game to support 1080p. NBA Street Homecourt (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12680) is.

Side note: congratulations, Microsoft, on allowing games to output in 1080p. The question is, if your console was capable of it all this time, why didn't you just support it at launch? I get the feeling the answer is because the 360 actually DOESN'T support 1080p, but instead upscales 720p or 1080i.

Dunno if this is exactly a dagger. Then again I'd be interested, being a pretty badass tennis player myself. :D

Why's that? I know the 360 supports 1080p output via a software update. The question is, is it upscaled 1080p or native 1080p?

Except, it doesn't actually say they're native--and I didn't, either. They just support 1080p. They don't say HOW. I still question why, if the 360 could do 1080p, Microsoft didn't just enable it by default.

because it doesn't make much of a difference, and it was only done after sony thought they had the leg up on M$ and begin spouting the lies of 'OMG this is true HD, the games you have played for the last year are fake hd!!!" and all the fanboi's starting spouting superiority and using 1080p as a main bulletpoint to support that.

oh also, lets not forget how many people even have 1080p sets, and how many had 1080p sets when the 360 came out.

While games released for the Xbox 360 have up until now supported 1080i resolution, today's information from Sega marks the first time a title has been confirmed for the console to include native 1080p support. Microsoft previously announced support for native 1080p games and movies in its October 2006 Xbox Live update.
