I hate the bench press and hardly ever do it. I'm 6'5'' with long arms, so it's always an awkward exercise. The heaviest I've ever benched is 275 or 285 (can't remember)...I haven't tried anything heavier than that, but I normally keep to a 225-185 pyramid. Like I say, I hate the bench press....it's a stupid overrated exercise anyway for dudes who go to the gym to do their one rep and pick up chicks.

275 is how much i do my 10 reps in, no idea how much my max is... probably 315 i'm guessing. I weigh about 220~230ish. Of course i'm a bit older than you guys and have been working out since i was a fetus. i'm about 6'3" and have the really long arms, so it is a bit more difficult for me than some of my buddies i work out with who are like 5'5"...

i'm with Hysterikill though - bench press is overrated and simply numbers guys use to throw out to impress chicks.

Rob19 is pretty damn impressive.... 225 at 16? that is something to be proud of. PLUS he's not a moron like a lot of people on here... so that says a lot.

I have done reps at 280, although like another poster, I prefer to do pyramid sets with the heavy being more like 250-260.

I dont like trying to find a MAX cause I usually dont feel to good afterwards.

For the younger crowd, very impressive numbers. Keep it up. Definately the longer you stick with it the more you will see. Kindve like the tortoise and the hair,

DISCLAIMER:
Due to the crazy schedule and lack of working out over the last 3 months, I might be lucky to get up two wheels on each side (225) right now

02-10-2007, 09:27 AM
i just always worried about reps of 225...due to college football and up..thats the set weight to show "your stuff" so on a good day id say about 9-11 times....11 being the most ive gotten with no spot...

but its all about ths squats baby...the CORE...and how hard you hit...never matters about weight in the gym

My max WAS 315. That's when is started lifting for mass. I got out of that. I don't want to be huge because I know one day, after the weight lifting is done, all that muscle is going to turn into flab. I lift lighter weight now. Not sure what I could max at now, but I know it wouldn't be 315.

Good point, especially to the young guys on this board...dont juice, its not worth it, and NO substitute for hard work.

Sethdaddy8

I'm 5'9 and a half. I have long arms for my height, and weigh about 180-185.
I've only lifted 8 times in the last 9 months but I can still bench 225 for 10 to 12 reps with no spot.

When in the swing of lifting regularly, I can usually bench 275 for 9 or so reps, and 315 for 3. Bench calculators estimate this max to be around 350, but I never bother to max. When I get up to this level of weight, I usually aggravate the minor pec tear that I have in each pec,and have to take off weeks to a month. I cant help but get competitive with myself when I get serious into lifting, so I repeatedly make the same mistakes. I just don't have the drive I used to have to get into the gym though, but at least I laid a decent foundation.

Anyway, I started tis thread, so figured it was time to share. Good stuff, and keep up the good work young guys.

Yeah, Ronnie must have some nasty **** going on inside of him. On top of that, I've read his contest prep., and it's totally ****ed up. as far as pro-bodybuilding goes, you're right. these guys eat ridiculous things that are very unhealthy as far as longevity goes...and the drugs, forget it. not to mention the women...ech. but i like lifting for excercise. its more enjoyable than running/cardio for me, and its not easy to find sports to play on a regular basis, to keep in shape with...so its a logical solution for me, and it doesn't hurt getting stronger while keeping my heart healthy as a bi-product.

I agree. I read these type of threads in other forums I post in, it's quite funny.

I don't really like telling anyone how much I can bench, though bench press only tells you how strong you are, doesn't really say that you are fit and in shape. I know fat people that can bench 300's and they are in horrible shape.

did 225 for 12, with no spot yesterday.
last rep was a little scary...but not bad for an old man. :(

Edit:
after about 6 weeks of lifting 1 to 2 times a week(since the above paragraph)... I can throw around 225 for 15-17 range. guess i can't expect too much progress considering the 1 to 2 hours a week i barely put into lifting. Getting old is bitter sweet...the man strength sticks, but the energy and desire fades.

Yeah i got pretty lucky there, my dads 5'11" (and thats height and width:tongue:) so its kinda weird because im tall and fairly thin and hes just big. Not to get too greedy but im really hoping i can hit 6'2" - 6'3" because thats what would set me apart from the other kids in football. I mean, im not the fastest but im near the top, im not the strongest but im near the top, im probably one of the smarter players when it comes to knowing the game but my size is what gives me the advantage because no im not the best athlete but i am near the top like everything else so the size jut helps out a lot. So yeah, im real fortunate to have that.

Right now just 4 sets of 4 cause I just moved up from 215 (which I was doing 4 sets of 6) I pretty much lift high weight low rep and it seems to be working a lot faster than medium weight high rep used to. I do hit my chest though...no cheating BS for me.

Thats good man, good for you. if you are interested in really increasing your power...pick up Dorian Yates' book...Blood sweat and Glory, or something like that....his basic philosophy helped me break beyond the power levels my body type should have limited me to(ectomorph, thin torso, longish arms).

275 is how much i do my 10 reps in, no idea how much my max is... probably 315 i'm guessing. I weigh about 220~230ish.
and i'm a guy who spends about 3 hours every day in the gym. I'll do about 4 sets of 10 (maybe the 4th set i'll hit 7) at 275. I've never tried to just do my absolute max for one rep, but i'm guessing its around 315 based on the reps i can do.... So for nizzo to say he's reppin 345 is just insane. plus i know he's just messin anyway for a laugh.

based on you doing 3 sets of 10 at 275, id say you can bench a hell of alot more then 315. a couple my boys i work out with can bench 315 and i dont think they can even rep 225 10 times for 4 sets.

Thats real good man...when I was more consistent, and could do 275 for the 8 to 10 rep range, I could rep 315 for 2 to 3....so you're probably more in the mid-300's. maybe even higher. and considering I only would do one very hard set, and then switch excercises not 4 sets of 10, thats impressive. But maxing is kinda dumb and an injury risk...especially for someone like me, who battles minor pec tears on a regular basis...but its a fun meat-head thing to talk about!

yea, the old equation is 225 for 10 reps = a 300 pound single bench.
something psychological kicks in when you get those 3 plates on there though, and people can get psyched out.

45 lbs....when i was in 5th grade, i tried to do it and it fell on me.:(

true story. I went to a prep school that has the top swim program in the country. Girls & guys win states every year, and Florida is no joke.

One of the few times I entered the weight room (i hate freaking lifting)
I'm on the bench. I think I had the 35s on.

This girl comes up and asks me if I'm done using the bench. I sad yes.
She said do you mind taking off your weights. She proceeded to put
the plates on.

I never went in that weight room again. Those chicks were built like brick
shat houses.

Lifting strength is weird though. Because when I boxed when I was younger, I'd knock the f out of the body builder sorts. And found their
jabs to be far less painful than some of the svelt guys. Now, weight
room strength translates well on mats and in sports like football I suppose.

Damn swimmers are strong too. Those chicks smelled like chlorine though
and had green hair.

Thats crazy man. I've never seen a girl bench with the big plates on...
let alone in high school...jeez.(i know they are out there, just never seen it)

punching power is kinda like baseball pitchers...either you got it or you don't.
some guys can just pitch. and body building wont help that much, in comparison to hitting the bags and practicing. wirey guys can rotate and whip thier punches too, as opposed to stocky guys who can't create any inertia, especially over a short distance.

it was quite disconcerting. maybe a dozen girls all working out with plates,
squating ridiculous amounts of weights. Swimmers are funny too. The girls have hairy legs and power lifted while the boys shaved their legs, and worked out with light weight.

That being said, I need to hit the iron, as Spray Mucus says. I am so weak. And I know just a little gym time would help with my tennis as well
as my physique. It's just hard to start. To get over the hump. Not to mention that pain after just the first few workouts.

Thats a freaky scene man...

But if you don't like to lift, I wouldn't bother...keep playin tennis, do stuff you enjoy to get/keep yourself healthy. But if you want to build your physique, I guess you have little choice...we've talked about how far push-ups and sit-ups can take you physically/mentally.
and the pain is only bad, when you do your legs and you go to take a dump like 2 days later...then its a biotch.

In high school (about 25 pounds lighter ago) I used to box with my friends. I could hold my own with my speed and height, but now with the added weight I know I definitely hit A LOT harder. I'm kind of an average swimmer...but I'd probably give you a hell of a game in Tennis (4 years high school (3 varsity) and 2 years JC (started both years) but I haven't really played since I started football back up so I'd be reaaaaallly rusty probably....and the sprain on my index finger sucks =/
