The Confederations Cup starts this week in that crappy nation that we call France. This 8 nation tournament has the same format as the World Cup, the only difference is that it is 8 teams. Here are the Confederations Cup nations, and how they qualified:

France-winnerUEFA European Championship 2000.

Brazil-winner World Cup 2002

Japan-winner AFC Asian Nations Cup 2000

USA-winner CONCACAF Gold Cup 2002

New Zealand-winner OFC Oceania Nations Cup 2002

Cameroon-winner CAF African Cup of Nations 2002

Colombia-winner CONMEBOL Copa America 2001

Turkey-third place in World Cup 2002

Note: Germany is supposed to be in this tournament since they finished second in the 2002 World Cup, but they declined the invite, so Turkey comes instead.

Here is the US squad for the Confederations Cup. There are some players who decided not to play because they are tired (or lazy), injured, or in McBride's case, a family situation (his wife is expected to give birth soon). Some players missing, like Kasey Keller (injury), Claudio Reyna (injury), and Brian McBride will probably play in the Gold Cup next month, which is being played in Foxboro, Miami, and Mexico City. Anyway, here is the roster of the coolest national soccer team, the United States:

Name Pos. Club

Armas, Chris M Chicago Fire (MLS)
Beasley, DaMarcus F Chicago Fire (MLS)
Berhalter, Gregg D Energie Cottbus (Germany)
Bocanegra, Carlos D Chicago Fire (MLS)

But umm not like the English announcers know what they are talking about....they just sit there and barely say anything. So don't worry about a thing.

That is true about the English speaking announcers except for Tommy Smyth....he is the man.

Looking at the US roster a few things jump out.
As for the goalie situation this cup play is probably an audition for Tim Howard to see if Manchested United will take him(especially if he outplays Barthez).
I noticed Claudio Reyna is not on the roster, therefore his knee must not be healed up.
Also, this cup competition might be to develop depth for the World Cup qualification run starting next year.

Spain isn't good enough for this tournament. For them to get in, they would have had to won Euro 2000. They can get in the next Confed Cup if they win Euro 2004 (which won't happen).

Reyna is going to try to play in the Gold Cup, but he is out of this because I don't think his knee has fully healed yet and they want to rest him.

Howard going to Manchester United is pretty much a done deal and it will be official in July. However, I would put money on him not being their main keeper this year. I think he will either be a backup or be loaned out to one of Manchester United's loaner clubs (like Royal Antwerp).

The USA is using a lot of players who don't have a lot of international experience but soon will be essential to the US National Team, like Bobby Convey and Kyle Martino. Also, there are a lot of guys on this team that will never go to a World Cup but are decent depth for the National Team.

No Josh Wolff....No Brad Friedel....No Brian McBride....No John O'Brien.....No Anthony Sanneh.....No confederation cup win for US.

Josh Wolff sucks man...lol...he has like one goal all season in MLS, he shouldn't be back on the National Team until he learns how to score since he is a striker. The only big losses for the US are McBride, Friedel, O'Brien, and Reyna. We can live without Sanneh although he is good. No nation brought a full squad to this tournament except for New Zealand, so I am not concerned that we are playing without a full squad. Next month's Gold Cup is more important than the Confed Cup but I think we can perform well in this tournament. I really want to see how Howard does.

Oh damn forgot Reyna. Wolff doesn't suck. He won like 3 out of 4 prelimanaries before the WC started. He is good and young still needs to learn a few things....that is why he should be on the team...to learn from the older guys.

Turkey won 2-1. They scored one goal off a PK because their player dove in the box.

The US was ripped off out of a goal. A Turkish player headed the ball out of the goal after it passed the line but the refs didn't see it. DaMarcus Beasley scored the USA's only goal.

Well, it shows how much of a joke the Confederations Cup is :(. Miguel would respond but SPAIN DIDN'T QUALIFY FOR THE TOURNAMENT!

I think this is a good tournament because, well, you get to see some good soccer :) and it gives players international experience who wouldn't necessarily play in a World Cup. Also, I like seeing New Zealand because now Oceania got a spot in the World Cup so a team in Oceania doesn't have to a playoff against a team in Europe to get in, and it is almost a guarantee that the team from Oceania will be either Australia or New Zealand.

Hey, I've watched some of the games, but I'm not too into it since the USA didn't have a realistic chance of winning it, and Spain didn't qualify. But, still, it's been some good soccer.

You said Oceania fights with Europe for a spot in the World Cup. That is a false statement. The winner of Oceania plays a South American team to see who goes to the cup. But they may change it to 36 teams instead of 32 for next cup so it may all change.

Europe, South America, it doesn't matter because an Oceania team has no chance against a team from either of those continents. However, Oceania gets an automatic bid in the next World Cup which means we will see Australia or New Zealand in the next World Cup.

I hope they change it to 36 but it doesn't matter for the USA. If I could bet on one team making it to the next World Cup (besides Germany the host country since they get in automatically) I would bet on the USA. The USA has the easiest road to qualification in the world, I know they got in towards the way end last time around but they are a lot better now. CONCACAF is a joke.

Prime Time

Remember USA only won 2 out of 5 games in the WC last year. Don't take CONCACAF to lightly. Oceania could beat a South American team like Chile,Paraguay etc. Concacaf has Mexico,Jamaica...not exactly world class but not exaclty I'll lie over for you USA.

The USA went 2-2-1 in the World Cup which is better than what 3/4ths of the World Cup field did. We went to the Quarterfinals, that is pretty good.

CONCACAF should be renamed CONCACRAP. There are 2 good teams in Mexico and the USA, one decent team in Costa Rica (they actually did OK in the World Cup, they almost got to the second stage), and Guatemala is ok too. However, CONCACAF gets three teams in the World Cup, which means three teams in CONCACAF have to do better in qualifing so that the USA doesn't go to WC2006. Do you think three of these teams have a chance of doing better than the USA: Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, El Salvador. Maybe 1 or 2 of them may do better in qualifing but probably not, but definitely not three. The USA is the closest thing to a lock for a nation to make the next World Cup. Their road is just way to easy.

A couple of thoughts here. It seems the USA team likes to play in France as much as our Dolphins like to play in New Jersey swamps, and the western ghetto of New York state, which is not much.
Second, Oceania will get a place in the 2006 World Cup without having to face a playoff(in 2002 they had to face the 5th place South America team). Also in 2006 CONCACAF gets a chance at a 4th spot in the World Cup with the 4th place team in playoff, I believe against a South America team.
