Im downloading the demo as I type this and was wondering if anyone has ever played this before and if its still got a decent fan base or whatnot.

Its just that Ive heard that on some servers you can be the only person on a planet due to lack of people playing, which defeats the purpose of it being an MMO.

It use to be huge but lost tons of fans because it use to be only the best people in the game would become a jedi so there was a purpose to it. Then they made it anyone could be jedi and it hit a major downhill decline.

The jedi changes was only the tip of the iceberg. Once the game played like a very deep RPG with a well sized community supporting it. There were a lot of options on how you would play your character. You did not have to always be the same class type all of the time. If you put enough time and thought into your character, you could have many different abilities so that you could fill different roles in a party.

Then came the dreaded NGE patch, and the game was completely turned upside down by SOE. They changed the class system to be more in line with other MMOs, you picked a class and that was what you were the rest of the time. So, all of those Jedis who worked their ***** off to get there, got the shaft completely. Anyone can now create a Jedi from the beginning of the game, and they are nowhere near as powerful as they used to be.

Fans waited for the Smuggler class to be functional, then SOE just gave them a bunch of escort & delivery missions once they launched their space expansion.

The creature handler was a very popular class, as most pet classes are in any MMO(and this class was pretty cool) - it was removed entirely.

The whole game really went from a majorly in-depth MMO, to some half-assed cross pollination of a MMO "Action" RPG.

SOE completely screwed their fanbase, and the current population of SWG is a shining example of what not to do with game updates in a well established MMORPG.

Exactly! It's the best gaming experience I've ever had in my life, until that.

Go to any MMORPG message board and you can find someone who used to play Galaxies and who wrote a 5 page essay as to why this game failed. It is my opinion that Galaxies is one of the biggest failures in MMORPG history as if it was just half way decent it would be the biggest MMORPG just by name only.

You can just see the passion from the fans or ex-fans to just see how great this game could of been. I have NEVER seen a MMORPG generate more 5 to 20 page essays about it than Galaxies.

I played SWG for over a year. It's one of those games that you could play for 3 hours and realize you accomplished nothing (in game of course). There are better ones out there IMO. Let us know what you think of it.

So far I think its pretty good being that its different from WoW in that its not the same old sword and board setting.

Blasters and X-Wings are a nice change of pace....we'll see if I get bored I only have a few more days left before the trial runs out.
