Anyone else looking forward to this game? I personally can't wait. The entire premise of the game is what I have been longing for in Tony Hawk games for so long, and that's REALISM. You won't be seeing handstand grinds or double backflips over stairs in this game. You also won't be seeing city streets littered with quarterpipes and ramps. This game is purely about realism and creativity, and that's what I've always wanted from the THPS games.

Basically you will be in a city (a huge open world one like the one in Project 8) and you get to skate around and come up with creative lines on real city structers, like ledges and benches and stairs etc, but WITHOUT the aid of a bazillion ramps set up all over the city like it's some giant skatepark. This is how I play Tony Hawk game anyway. I always free skate and just find a stair set or something interesting (that ISN'T a ramp or quarterpipe, it has to be something that would normally be there) and just session it for awhile. The problem is, it never feels right because if you want to do a simple kickflip over stairs in real life, the board rotation matches the distance, so it takes almost as long for it to do the kickflip as it does to clear the stairs. In Tony Hawk the kickflip happens so quick the board ends up magically sticking back to your feet and you can even do ANOTHER flip trick before you land. Completely unrealistic, and while entertaining, I am always yearning for more realism.

This game does away with balance meters too, and the trick system is mapped different, to the analog sticks, to give a sense of "realness" to the trick. For example, a kickflip is a flick of the analog stick a certain way, fairly easy, because in real life a kickflip is a fairly easy trick to learn, but a 360 flip for example, requires a swooping arc of the stick, so it's harder to pull off, just like real life. This system makes it actually REWARDING to pull off harder tricks, and they also say there will be no stat increases, that you start the game full capable of doing every trick, but you won't be able to at first, because harder tricks take more practice to learn and pull off, just like real life. Also, manualing isn't a simple up down or down up then keep the balance meter level anymore. It is done by slightly pressing the stick up (or down) and holding it level there. Press it all the way up and you will faceplant, you gotta keep it slightly up and level. It all sounds really challenging, but also really rewarding, and that is what a skating game has needed all along.

Here are a couple of videos of the gameplay:

Notice you don't see the guy doing 5 foot high ollies or triple kickflips in an ollie, and it all looks fluid and smooth and realistic. Also, apparently you can rewind time and watch your run, and then edit the videos and upload them online, so you essentially make your own skate video and can share them via XBL. This game is going to be so awesome!

Here's the GameSpot preview of it, which goes into more detail than I can (they played a demo) about tricks and how they are pulled and the gameplay and features:

That entire video is basiaclly exactly how I play Tony Hawk games, just skating around and finding off-beat lines and doing little, simple, and REALISTIC tricks on random stuff. I hardly ever use the scattered ramps and quarter-pipes when I'm playing free skate in THPS games.

The animation could use some work though. It looked a bit "jerky" and just not as smooth and fluid as Project 8, and the graphics overall looked a little flat and bland, but I'm chalking all that up to it being unfinished, and hopefully they will be polished by release because this game's concept is aweomse and I wouldn't want poor graphics to bring it down.

That's a REAL place. Danny Way is building it in Hawai'i as his own personal skating "nirvana". They took the blueprints from what he is building and made it a bonus level in the game. If you notice they aren't doing double-backflip-900-quadruple-kickflip-nollies in that video like you would be in tony hawk if you had ramps that size.

Danny Way is the guy who invented that INSANELY large ramp they use for the skateboarding big air events at the X-Games. He's also the guy who used said ramp to jump the GREAT WALL OF CHINA .
