THREE REASONS WHY LIONS DONT DRAFT A QB IN ROUND 1

3. Jon Kitna threw for over 4,000 yards and has the strong arm needed to fit into Martz's system. Yes, he's 35 years old but has not shown signs of wearing down. He probably has another 2 years left. He's obviously not the greatest Qb in the NFL, but with a few less turnovers, he could be much improved next season.
2. The Lions defense is what is holding them back from winning games. They need pass rushing D-ends.With the loss of Dre Bly, they need help in the secondary. They need a linebacker. Best Defensive Player is who they pick.
Gaines Adams comes to mind for the surprise pick in the draft.

NUMBER ONE REASON WHY LIONS DONT DRAFT A QB IN ROUND 1

1.Mike Martz, look at the guys history. As the offensive coordinator of the Lions and a well respected guy in the Lions organization, he will probably have a big say in who they draft on the offensive side. Martz, with the Rams, picked up Marc Bulger after being drafted by the Saints in the 6th round and picked up Kurt Warner as an undrafted FA. This guy knows how to find gems in the later rounds/after the draft. I highly doubt they use their 1st pick on a QB.

Random Facts why Vikings arent drafting a QB in Round 1

They have many more important needs (according to the Vikings organization). One of their starting DE's didnt record a single sack all season. They desperately need a pass rushing D-end yet no one seems to talk about that. They will jump on Adrian Peterson if still available. With the addition of Mike Doss, they probably wont take Laron Landry, but who knows. Brad Childress has stated its an open competition for the QB spot this offseason between Brooks Bollinger and Tarvaris Jackson. Childress picked Jackson with a reach in the 2nd round last year, he will not show he made a mistake by drafting a QB so early this year. Supposedly, Childress is still very high on Jackson. They showed no interest in David Carr which could mean they have no interest in adding talent to the QB position.

Browns is the only team that scares me.
Reasons for fear...

Quinn is a local guy. The Wiess-Crennel connection. Browns owner stating publicly that he wants a franchise QB drafted NOW. Charlie Frye not getting the job done. One good thing however, if word is true and Raiders are on the verge of signing Calvin Johnson, that would mean Jamarcus Russell could fall to the Browns. I've read that the Browns GM really likes Russell. Plus Frye is still young, was only drafted 2 years ago. Crennel has stated he will give backup Derek Anderson a look this offseason to see if he can start.

One of those teams WILL draft Quinn. its a reach to think we will get him. We will get a QB in the Draft but wont be 1st round unless theres a suprise. Lions will go get Quinn IMO. Kitna isnt getting any younger and they have young WR's.

yea, you're right, he was drafted by the saints. However, he never made the team. He landed with the Rams. Martz must've seen something in Bulger to get this guy drafted in the 6th round on their team.

This sounds like more wishful thinking to me.

Jon Kitna is 35 years old and could act as mentor to Brady Quinn or whomever the same way many would want Green to do if he was to come here.

You are also giving Mike Martz too much credit with bringing in QBs because he's not a personnel guy.

I cant see the Lions passing on Quinn, would be the worst move they could make IMO. And Martz will have little input into the final choice. Sorry, but teams listen to the OC, but the choices are made by the HC and GM, neither of which is Martz. And lets not give Martz credit for Warner while we are at it, and not sure about Bulger either. At the least Warner was more a Vermeil guy than Martz.

Fact is, Quinn is the kind of cerebral pocket passer that Martz likes, Kitna is decent but gettinng old and clearly not the future-especially considering that team is a few years away from contention. Their OLine isnt fantastic, but neither are they desperate for a Joe Thomas either.

Quinn just makes the most sense, unless they just fall in love with Gaines or something. Wouldnt count out a trade down from them though, question is with who?

I agree that defense is a much more pressing need for the Lions but they could draft a franchise qb... Kitna is a nice qb to have around while you groom another. I can see them drafting a qb and then focusing more on defense in the 2nd, 3rd, and fourth rounds.

Come on .. Kitna is 35 yrs old . 35 YEARS OLD !! The Lions have a very good chance of drafting Quinn..

You think they drafted all those wide receivers to not have a guy get them the ball ?

This is a silly thread IMO. Fact is, Quinn is 4 year starter w/experience in a pro system . . . a mental QB and a workout warrior w/ a solid arm. These type of guys don't grow on trees. Tho its never 100% on any QB (look at Eli) . . . a team like the Lions w/ Kitna, or Browns w/ Frye or Vikings w/ Jackson . . . hell maybe even Washington . . . Quinn is expected to be a stud in this league and its a fantasy thinking he will be there at 9 or IMO even out of the top 3. Leinart had arm strength questions and Cutler played for Vandy . . . thats why those guys slid . . . Quinn has really no questions physcially and played for Notre Dame . . . people only question him winning big games . . . its nonsense really . . . he had a sucky line w/ a sucky defense last season and he lost to better teams . . . plain and simple. The only team not taking Quinn that I am sure of is Atlanta and Arizona . . . everybody else is a contender IMO. 6 teams . . . 9 isn't gonna happen.

What drafted receivers?

Charles Rogers is OUT of football.
Mike Williams is/has contemplated retirement.... RETIREMENT.
Roy Williams is the only one left.

Mike Furrey was a converted safety from the Rams.

Which drafted receivers?

you make a good point BUT the QUARTERBACK POSITION is just ONE POSITION. These teams ahead of the Fins have so many needs..
Look at the Lions.. Their offense is set for next season. They might pickup some olinemen in the draft as every team and they could use another reciever and a TE. When you look at the Lions, the quarterback position is not a position that needs a 1st round talent upgrade. Their defense is what really needs a major upgrade.
Vikings need pass rushing DEs. They JUST drafted a QB last year in the SECOND ROUND. NO TEAM ever will draft a qb in the 2nd round and then without giving that guy a FAIR shot at playing time, draft ANOTHER QB the NEXT year in the 1st round... that just doesnt make sense
RAIDERS are simple.. theyre not drafting quinn. Theyre already signing Johnson.
Cleveland could take quinn. However, theyve already stated they like Russel and the owner/gm want him if hes available. Plus a fan base like the browns would really be excited with a physical specimen like Russell. Theyve been bored with Qbs the past few years (tim couch, charlie frye, kelly holcombe??)

people need to look at the bigger picture. the qb position is just ONE position. Luckily for the Fins, no team ahead of the Fins desperately need a qb except the raiders who arent even taking one in round 1. Vikings already got theirs, lions need defense desperately, and browns hafta give frye one more year, and with no future at rb, theyll look to get peterson- that would be great for public relations as the browns fan base wants peterson more than anyone

The Lions recievers ARE IN FACT getting the ball. Between Mike Furrey and Roy Williams, they've gotten the ball, i duno, 170 times? Thats pretty insane. Kitnas done a pretty good job. As stated though, he does turn the ball over too many times but he can corrent that as he continues to learn Martzs system more and more. My prediction, Lions draft a 6/7th round qb prospect. Maybe Zabranksy ?

Not buying that one bit. Kitna is still an old and at best marginal QB. Quinn is a potential all-pro guy who can lead the team and take over games ala Manning/Brady. I dont see the Lions using Kitna any more than the Bengals did when they took Carson.
Defense is a need for the Lions, but lets face it, they are not contending NOW, so they might as well build a solid base for the future, and Quinn would be a better overall talent than any defender. Not to mention Quinn is about the ideal QB to run Martz system that you keep pointing out. Not happening.

Makes sense but a few things:

The Lions pick is way too high for a defensive pick. Unless they trade down, they're likely to select an offensive player. If Millen is willing to lower his already abysmal standings among critics, he'll draft CJ, who's a pretty good player for Martz's offense and a valuable trade commodity. And there's the history. Harrington left a pretty sour taste with regards to a high draft pick used on a QB. Unjustified fear but still potent.

Vikings have Chester Taylor who ran for 1200+ yards last season so Peterson I don't think is a high priority. Childress was just gushing about Quinn at Pro Day and considering Quinn fits their offense as well as he does ours, he could be taken. A possible solution is a trade up to Washington.

Browns do look like they may draft Quinn but not if Russell is still around. Phil Savage has been following Russell since he was in football diapers in high school. But Peterson is still a very potent pick for them as well. Like the Lions, they too have had a bad history with QB's picked high in Tim Couch.

Warner was in camp with the Packers for a couple of seasons. Last guy cut, first guy stocking shelfs. Not exactly an unknown.Washington traded up to get Jason Campbell, they ain't looking QB day one

I'd be surprised if he drafts QB in the first. The one given about Millen is that he is in over his head and does not make the best draft decisions. Also he is under a lot of pressure from the fans who want him fired.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Millen

So while it is possible he takes Quinn, its also just as likely he is feeling the heat and decides to bypass QB which will not help him win now.
