Management changes at Sony.

Ken Kutaragi Steps Down
"Father of PlayStation" shifted in "executive management transition".
by Rob Burman (http://ps3.ign.com/email.html), IGN UK

UK, April 26, 2007 - Ken Kutaragi will step down from his position as SCEI's representative director, chairman and Group CEO on June 19, Sony has revealed. He will be replaced by Kazuo Hirai, current president and group COO, who will take on responsibility as leader of the PlayStation business worldwide.

According to the press release issued by Sony, Kutaragi is leaving to "pursue his dreams beyond PlayStation and to accelerate his network vision", whatever that means. Talking about the years he's spent building up PlayStation, Kutaragi said, "I am happy to graduate from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. after introducing four platforms to the PlayStation family. It has been an exciting experience to change the world of computer entertainment by marrying cutting edge technologies with creative minds from all over the world. I'm looking forward to building on this vision in my next endeavors."

Kutaragi will continue to work with Sony as a senior technology advisor and will support Sir Howard Stringer, chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation. Stringer said the company had benefited tremendously from Kuturagi's visions and will continue to be encouraged and supported by Sony.

good news or bad news

Both.

Bad news - The PS3 is in huge trouble and Sony basically admitted as much firing (lol@stepping down) Ken Kutaragi. The guy bit off way more than he could chew with the PS3. Not to mention when he spoke lately, it was usually a PR nightmare.

Good news - They reality has finally set in at Sony that they're getting their tails kicked by the Wii worldwide and Xbox 360 in North America and it wasn't gonna change unless they did something. Hopefully Kaz Harai rights the ship.

Hey, remember when J.Allard (former Coporate Vice President of Microsoft Gaming Division) said this back in 2005?

"What gets me out of bed and into the office every day is the thought of Ken Kutaragi's resignation letter, framed, hanging next to my desk."

Good times.

It will be interesting going forward, how the hardware for the PS4 is. I'd bet it will be a very "safe" design, with standard parts compared to the PS2/PS3.

Ken had some crazy comments, and was always good for a laugh. I'll kinda miss him. :D

Make no mistake though, Ken was FIRED, and this move is a tacit admission by Sony that the PS3 is in trouble...

Nothing is, just a bunch of Xbox lovers grasping at straws. PS3 is a better system, it will be fine.

And Sony fans living in denial. It works both ways.

Always fun to watch.

Denial? The PS3 is a lot better than the 360. Why did MS have to release the Elite shortly after the PS3 launched? Because the 360 specs were up to PS3 par? Doubt it.

they didn't have to release the elite lol....they did it to create another console buying boom for themselves for people that buy into the "must have hdmiz0r" that were on the fence between the ps3 and 360....

Regardless if they HAD to or not, they did.

What Microsoft really needs to do is axe that non-hardrive model. They took a step backwards with that move.

Interesting tidbit about the Elite. It has an HDMI connector on it for 1080P output but no way to play 1080P content without purchasing the HD-DVD player accessory. Total up the cost of both devices and you have something that costs 100 more than the Playstation 3. Kind of interesting don't ya think?

It is interesting. But there's still the illusion that Xbox is cheaper. It isn't if you want the same capabilities that come stock with PS3.
