This guy isn't exactly a prophet in this industry, but he's on point sometimes.

Anywhoo, he thinks that when the 60GB model sells out )at $499, then sony will make the 80GB+Motorstorm bundle go for $499... then early next year. drop the whole thing to $399.

If he's right, sweet.

The same guy who confidently predicted MS would drop the 360 price by $50 at E3 last week?

I value the insight of some posters here more than "Mr. Obvious Pachter" and what he says. Although I tend to agree that Sony will lower the 80GB model to $499 (without a game included though) once the old 60 GB system sells out.

I don't see them hitting $399 until late 2008, at best.

Sounds cool and I'd certainly buy it at that price. I won't hold my breath though. I'll continue playing my 360 until the PS3 price comes down, if ever

Yea, I'll hold off on a PS3 until it hits $399.

He might be predicting the drop to $399 in early 2008 because of this artcle:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26703

Here is the most telling quote that could lead him to that prediciton IMO.

Sony Computer (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26703#) Entertainment (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26703#) Europe president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation 3 will be the clear leader in the next-gen console market within the next nine months.
"PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08. They really, really will," he predicted.
"It's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you."

So Sonys Plan is to Lose money?

I don't get it doesn't it cost like 800 bucks to make a PS3?

anaylists showed that that price may go down at least 100 dollars a year.

You have to remember Maj that the profit from Sony's systems does not come from console sales specifically. It ends up coming from the software & accessories that everyone ends up buying. Obviously the less consoles that are sold, the less of a consumer base you have out there purchasing said items. So their objective is to increase their user base by using price marketing, which in Sony's case is long overdue and I agree with many others in that it is still in need of further review.

Also those numbers about 800 per console are definitely far from correct as of today. There have been multiple reductions in production cost of everything from the Blue laser diodes to the Cell processor itself. As time goes on it continues to get cheaper for them to produce, especially if they sell more consoles.

If I didn't have a 360, I would have no problem paying $500 for a ps3. it's just I can't pay that much when I have a similar system when there are only 3 games I want right now for it.

Lets not forget that the PS3 is helping the fight to cure cancer! :D

Well worth the money right there!

I had the same idea.

That's what I was thinking today. If Sony made the decision to drop the price and introduce the 80 gig version at the same time then they would have had to introduce the 80 gig at $499 and droped the 60 gig even more, like $349 or something. They may just be waiting to clear the shelves of 60 gig consoles and then immediately drop the 80 gig to $499.

That scenario would make sense to me, if they let the shelves clear of 60 gigs and then still leave the 80 at $599 then they are morons for waiting as long as they did before explaining exactly what there "Price cut" was. Consumers do not like to be screwed around with. Microsoft has to be loving this crap.

$399 is still a hell of a lot of money for a guy like me. Factor in tax, another controller, and 1 game, and you're over $500!

You single guys can afford that, but I can't.

at $399 i think the PS3 is a win... if anything, for the Blu-ray capabilities.

That's a bit of a broad assumption.

Not really.

When I was single, I had more money than I knew what to do with. I bought every system and game I wanted.

Even though I make WAY more money now, I had WAY more disposable income then.

If you're not married and don't have kids, you don't understand how good you have it financially when you're single.

No I understand, which is why I had deleted my post before I you replied. I misread what you said, and at first was thinking you were saying that people talking about a ps3 being a good price at $399 were all single.

I'm married with two kids and bought it for 600. I wish I would have wait now though :(. But anyway, you can still have disposable income (a little)with a family if you play your cards right. I agree though that it's much easier when you're single.

Analyst predicts price drop once 60GB model sells out

Industry analyst Michael Pachter...

And that's where I stopped reading.

Seriously, shake one of those magic 8-ball's for industry predictions. It'll be right more often than Pachter.
