View Full Version : Ripped down by their own hands: The Patriots

Cockiness or smugness can be measured in a variety of ways. Sometimes it comes in the forms of guaranteed win. Sometimes it's a player mouthing off during a press conference. Other times it's media reports of bizarre pre-game team activities... And sometimes it's when you think you are SO good that no one is good enough to even talk about you. Sometimes you are so full off yourself that even people telling the blatant truth about you becomes a personal and violent attack...

May I please present the New England Patriots...

For years the media machine has given them the mantra of the best "team". Guys who don't speak out. Guys that don't overly celebrate. And because of this it was assumed that they were not cocky or smug. But there were signs... Signs that the patriots thought they were better than everyone else on the planet. And as a proffesional athelete you must have confidence in your abilities, but a grounded athelete always was able to gauge his talent level versus others. Sometimes guys are just slow, or small, or they have bad hands or throw an inaccurate ball. And I know the truth can be painfull sometimes, but it is still the truth. But sometimes you are so smug with yourself that it becomes unacceptable to you for people who are "below" you to even utter these these truths.

If the pats had a crappy run game, and some one pointed it out it was labled an "attack".

If Tom brady was not fellated and announced the as the best QB ever it was a personal affront. One worthy of a scathing rebuttal.

If their defense looked suseptable to the pass and it was mentioned, it became poster board material.

If a player cheated, and was caught for it. If anyone EVER dared to question his prevoius exploits they were labled "haters" on a witch hunt. Almost as if they were to good to be questioned by the likes of us! If a reporter questioned further they were accused of trashing a players reputation, when the player had already done that by cheating in the first place...

It got to the point where coaches were caught cheating, given the heaviest punishment ever handed down, and they then berrated the media for having the audacity to label them a cheater and question their past exploits.

Cockiness and smugness is not about predicting wins.

It's not about endzone celebrations.

It' not about calling out players in a press conference.

It is simply thinking you are better than EVERYONE else and that NO ONE is good enough to point out the ugly truths about you.

The football gods remind us everday that glory is fleeting, that there is always some one better, and that players that know their weakness laso know their strength. They also remind us that the proud will fall to the meek. And the height of that fall is measured in one's own self perception. Humbility leads to acceptance.

And no one can EVER say the patriots were humble.

A Humble man accepts honest critisism.

A Humble man knows when he is wrong.

A Humble man knows for every win there is a loss.

A humble man knows ANYBODY has a chance, no matter how slim.

Yesterday the football gods built up the mighty. They let them taste the pinnacle of perfection. They let them see the promised country. And then they were smited. They were torn down brick by brick. The fell further than any team in the history of football...

There were no Controversial calls, there is no third entity to shift the blame.

Was it because of the giants they fell? Or maybe it was because they were not as good as they wanted us to believe... Either way I think(hope) I speak for most: They deserved it.

damn, quoting the bible...

This is my favorite: The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
