View Full Version : Keith Byers - TRAITOR

In 1997, New England was at the heart of a delicious bit of espionage. The Patriots had signed fullback Keith Byars that season after he'd been cut by the Dolphins. New England then played Miami in the final game of the season, setting up a rematch in the first-round of the playoffs the following weekend.

Byars taught the Patriots defense all of the Dolphins' audibles. During the game, linebacker Ted Johnson intercepted Dan Marino's slant pass and returned it for a touchdown as part of a 17-3 victory. Beyond that, the Patriots defense even communicated to each other using the Dolphins offensive signals as cues.
"They were using our signals all game," former Dolphins running back Bernie Parmalee said at the time.

Yeah, that's been referred to a few times. The bad thing is that we (JJ, Gary Stevens) knew the problem, and did nothing going into the playoff game. We played them and lost the last regular season game and then played them to following week in the wildcard round and lost.

Shame on Miami for not changing them when a big part of their team went on to one of our chief rivals. No fault of Byars here.

I see nothing wrong with it, in fact it shows how stupid the coaching staff was for not changing the signals.

This title is misleading. It shouldn't say Keith Byars = Traitor. Instead it should read Jimmy Johnson - ******* for not changing signals.

I agree, and that can go way back to the Shula days as well. I recall hearing Marino used the same calls and audibles for years and years.

Completely agree. How stupid can you be, really? I think all coaches make some adjustments to their signals. If Jimmy Johnson claims that everyone stole signals all the time, and even said he did it himself, how can he not change them?

With the players/coaches turn over that goes on in the NFL each year changing the signals should be standard procedure for any coach with half a brain.

What's really sad is that despite his name being spelled correctly in the blurb you posted, you still misspelled his name in the subject line.

The problem w/ this article is that Byars was signed by NE in 1996 not 1997 and Miami wasn't a playoff team in 1996.

So true, so true. I mean, those we're Gruden's signals I believe that he used as Head Coach under the Raiders, and the Raiders kept it the same.
