After months of rumors and denials, the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive is due to be manufactured soon and shipped in Q3 of 2008. Pegatron Technology, an OEM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, is reported to have received the winning order from Microsoft for a Blu-ray equipped XBOX 360.

Earlier reports cited Lite-On as the company with the privilege of building the new console for Microsoft. Lite-On is also currently one of the suppliers of the internal DVD drive fro the XBOX 360.

First, reports of Microsoft making their own version of the Wii Remote and now a Blu-Ray Xbox 360. Good idea or blatant imitators? Either way, E3 should be very interesting this year.

That is all fine and dandy, but they will not be able to take advantage of the storage of the BD because MS sold its soul to DVD for another generation (unless they make a CHEAP add on of course). If they tried it, they would piss off a very large install base.

until you hear something from a place like IGN, I'd be VERY skeptical about any of this

toms hardware.com? I just cant see MSoft paying probably hundreds of millions for licensing fees

 Good one. IGN breaks every video game story, confirmed.

Seriously though, Tom's Hardware didn't break the story, they are just one of the many places reporting it. Also, I put "Rumor" in the title for a reason. You want a source, here you go.

Blaj, they are just copying Sony. Think of another idea Microsoft, stop trying to copy our designs.

I think it's a great move by Microsoft. Their customers no longer have to pay money into a doomed format to get their HD movie experience.

Yeah, it's a fallacy that Sony owns Blu Ray exclusively. Its more like Sony has stock behind Blu Ray. ANYONE can make a Blu Ray player.

Anyone who thinks that is simply ignorant. However they are the original creators of BluRay, along with Pioneer. The investors didn't play a role until many years later when Sony finally had a plan to turn DVRB into BluRay.

I still remember the big deal they were making out of the DVR Blue back in 2000 or so. It just took them a while to get the format into a consumer-ready version. The funny part is with all of their delays, HD DVD beat them to the punch with an earlier release, even if it wasn't by much.

That's great but HD DVD lasted like 6 months ;>

Yeah, I have to imagine that Toshiba/Microsoft thought they could smell blood in the water when Sony was jumping on starting a newer format. They were all around when Sony flopped with Betamax and were hoping to cash in on another failure.

I think Sony did a good job selling BluRay as the superior format mostly due to their far better connections within the movie industry, along with the technical aspects they were able to boast above HD-DVD. While HD had merits of it's own, it was just really easy for Sony to play the "Mine's bigger" game. BluRay was marketed brilliantly by Sony to the film industry, and in the end it starved out any potential for HD to survive for long.

heh, your not thinking big enough. Myamoto created the freakin D-pad and Nintendo was the first to have joysticks on the 64 until sony came up with the 'dualshock'. You could argue that both M$ and $ony controllers wouldn't exist today without Nintendo.

yeah NO one thought of the joystick before Nintendo, I mean that thing that I always used to play with doesn't count as a joy stick right?

oh and also there were early concepts of the d-pad in Intellivision, and apparently something called Microvision. So nintendo didn't create the pad, they just took something that was already under the sun

---And they created a fully functional controller out of this. You can hate on Shiggy for it but he won many awards in the early 90s for the D-pad.

As for your 'joystick' response, obviously there's a big difference between that and modern day controllers. The atari joystick was not compact and, as that picture clearly shows, could never fit on a modern day controller. The N64 showed that you can have both a joystick and a Dpad, which paved the way for all the current controllers on the market right now.

I never said the companies wouldn't exist, just the concepts built into their controllers. I mean come on, the dualshock was created in a direct response to the N64 controller. (a controller that plays incredibly different from the controller they had at launch?)

As for the fanboy comment, whatever you say man.
