View Full Version : Matt Walsh has nothing new.

As has been expected, if you've been reading various reports over the last couple months, Matt Walsh does not have a tape of the walkthrough. His tapes (8 of them) showed taping coaching defensive signals, for which Bill Belichick already admitted to and the organization was punished for.

We've all gone back and forth for months about if Walsh has one, if he doesn't, if he does did the team know about it, if he does did it even matter if the team knew about it, etc. He doesn't have one.

I'm sure this will be spun by the haters, and in a sense by the Pats fans.

Personally, I'm glad it's over. I don't care what happens to the Boston Herald, the NY Times, Michael Levy, John Tomase. I don't even care what happens to Matt Walsh. In reality, the guy won big time. His name (and his lawyer's) was all over the place since Feb 2nd. He got alot of fame, and probably some extra business with his golf pro crap.

Now commence Operation Claim Cover-Up.

Apparently they also have them taping offensive signals as well as per the NYT articles, but you are correct they don't have the SB tape, which would have been the real problem for them, IMHO. If that's all Walsh has next Tuesday, then I suspect Goodell may not do much, if anything to them.

Or that it's been months and months and it's not like continuing to talk about it does anything. It's been discovered. It's been admitted. They were punished. This possibility of a walkthrough has been dominating the headlines and frankly, it obviously wasn't worth the stock you all put into it. You can just come out and say it really, you're disappointed it wasn't what you thought it was. If he produced a walk through, Belichick was done. The organization would've been crippled with salary cap fines and draft pick penalties and everything else. He didn't. He produced what Belichick already admitted he did and Goodell knew about.

The New York Times obtained a list of the Walsh tapes, and the league confirmed that list, which says that the Patriots taped offensive and defensive coaches in regular-season games against the Miami Dolphins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=mia), Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf), Cleveland Browns (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=cle) and San Diego Chargers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=sdg). The team also made video of the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=pit) in the 2002 AFC Championship Game.

"Mr. Walsh has never claimed to have a tape of the walk-through," said Walsh's lawyer Michael Levy, according to the Times. "Mr. Walsh has never been the source of any of the media speculation about such a tape. Mr. Walsh was not the source for the Feb. 2 Boston Herald article."

"This is consistent with what the Patriots had admitted they had been doing, consistent with what we already knew," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told

Guys chill out, save your stuff for the smack forum.

Matt Walsh deserves to be punished in some way or form. After months of speculation, why couldn't he just come out and say "I don't have video of the walkthrough, I never taped a Super Bowl walkthrough". All this caused was a media circus, and he turned in video that the NFL already knew.

Pretty unfair, you know, that Super Bowl walkthrough story was the topic on Media week before the Super Bowl game, and the Patriots' had to deal with those distractions at that time. Let me remind you the Patriots' were already punished for this; call it karma but I don't think it is anyway fair that they had to go through this BS story before the Super Bowl, then again, it is also not fair they had video taped opposing offensive/defensive coaches, though some of them, go back 6 years back.

The so called patriots dynasty will FOREVER be tarnished and have a big bold asterik next to it.

They were cheating the whole way as the tapes show regardless of whether he had a "certain game" tape or not. They were in fact cheating.

Their super bowl wins mean nothing.

I thaught the same just a few months ago, but I guess its not that way. When the punishment was handed down, I was definatly under the impression that it was for taping the jets coaches signals (a single incident). At the time, losing a 1st seemed huge, but at the time, I thaught it was only for taping the jets. I dont think they even saw the tapes before taking away a 1st rounder. And I thaught additional punishment would follow if they found evidence of it happening in the past.

Then it seems the commish took the stance that they will be punished for any past "illegal activity" unless they confess EVERYTHING that has happened. So when the pats confessed to doing it since 2000, it seems that the commish included all past acts (that they admitted to) in the punishment (the loss of the 1st rounder).

Seems to me they got punished for 1 act, confessed, and got off the hook for doing that same act countless times over a 7 year span. And it just so happens that those were the best years in team history :err: .

If any team is caught now, they will definatly lose a 1st rounder for their first offence. But somehow the pats do it for 7 years and recieve the same punishment.

Im not happy about it but its just the way it is. I just hate hearing pats fans (and several sports casters) make it sound like all this is nothing important, and how its all in the past. I watched those games. knowing the defensive play on any given down is a huge advantage. They cheated. The coaches knew it, and the players HAD to know (including the golden boy).

If it was the Browns instead of the Pats, they would have lost a lot more than a 1st, and the team would have probubly fired everyone involved. But since its the pats... Its no real advantage, and all in the past. :shakeno:

Zach Thomas in 2006 after the Dolphins were accused of "stealing" signals from the Patriots:

ďThat whole thing is blown out of proportion. Itís kind of frustrating because it takes away what we did in the game. Everybody is thinking the only way we could beat the New England Patriots is if we steal their signals. Thereís no stealing signals. You watch tape. It just frustrates me to even be put in the whole conversation of stealing signals. If I knew the signals, I wouldnít tell them. Iíd be stupid. Youíd need to slap me if I told you I figured out their signals. Iím not the smartest guy. I donít win at Trivial Pursuit and Iím not very good at Jeopardy, but if I knew his signals, I definitely wouldnít tell you guys. Iím a poker player. You canít show your hand. They blew that out of proportion when somebody said we bought tapes. There are no bought tapes. Why do you have to buy tapes in this league? Weíve got enough tapes that we watch. Itís frustrating because it takes away a great win for our defense. Thatís the only thing that frustrated me, that thatís the only way we could beat New England is if we steal their signals. First of all, Tom Brady was going on first sound the whole time. He wasnít even really checking off a lot. He knows what weíre doing. Weíve played each other so many times.Ē

[On whether you can steal signals during a game]
ďYeah, if you play somebody and they donít change it up. But you donít think the New England Patriots change up what they do? They study themselves better than anybody. You canít sit here and try to act like thatís the reason we shut them out. We play well against Tom Brady, but itís not by knowing their calls. Sometimes he knows exactly whatís coming against him, too, and he still completes it. He reads us better than anybody. To be honest, I still havenít figured out whatís going on with the Patriots. Trust me. Iíve played them for so long. They always mess with your mind on defense, make you hesitate and things. But even if we knew their calls, I wouldnít sit there and admit it. Thatís ridiculous.Ē

[On whether the Pats stole signals from the Dolphins in a late 1990s playoff game]
ďFirst of all, theyíre the best at doing that. Theyíre the best at studying other teams and stealing signals from the sidelines. Itís just part of the league. Everybody is going to try and get an edge somehow. I donít know if it helps us any at all. Itís so loud at a home game, you can barely hear the audibles anyway. On th road, itís a little easier Ö Youíve got to give us credit. The reason we won that game isnít because we stole signals or anything. When do we steal them? Weíre just trying to prepare, study their quarterback on tap and see what he does to help us out. It might have helped and it might not.Ē

"This is consistent with what the Patriots had admitted they had been doing, consistent with what we already knew," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told

The Associated Press.

That is not entirely correct... BB admitted only to taping Defensive Signals...

Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nwe)' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3244687

Further noting that Goodell only stated that "Defensive Signals" was the only information that BB divulged on taping.

Goodell noted that "we were the ones that disclosed" the Patriots' illegal taping of the New York Jets (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyj)' defensive signals in Week 1 of last season. Further, Goodell said, they had an admission by Belichick.

So now Walsh has submitted more proof that BB did not divulged all to the commissioner.

If a persistent problem is identified, the leagueís eight-member competition committee suggests changes to rules. In discussions of changes since 2000, one team, the New England Patriots (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/newenglandpatriots/index.html?inline=nyt-org), has surfaced more than any other, according to a longtime N.F.L. team executive with direct knowledge of the meetings.

I don't know if Belichick told Goodell he only taped defensive signals or that he had taped other teams signals, but it seems to me that is a rather minor point. Plays are called in through the headset to helmet communication system. The only offensive signals are also yelled out loud; they're in regards to type of formation (regular, two tight ends, empty backfield, etc.) so the appropriate players know who should be on or off the field for the next play. Everybody sitting in the stadium and watching TV can see the same thing just by watching who is coming on the field and who is running off the field. Taping offensive signals is a complete waste of time but it does prove one thing: Belichick is totally anal. He deserves the label of "idiot" rather than "genious" for risking getting suspended or banned for making these tapes.

Keeping (way too) busy. There just aren't enough hours in the day sometimes. My oldest is in college so I have to work 24 hrs a day to pay for that.....okay maybe not - it just seems that way sometimes. I've got a band concert to go to tonight. My 12 year old is in 6th grade band. Kind of funny, she had always been in choir and last year decided she was tired of it; so she joined the beginning band.....back to choir next year, though.

Well, so as to not completely hijack the thread; I think it's safe to say the spygate fiasco is finally being put to rest.
Looking back at all of it, one conclusion that I've come to is that Matt Walsh isn't really the villian alot of people painted him as. I believe he was dragged into it reluctantly. Did you watch Goodell's PC? According to him Walsh was being hounded by up to 14-15 reporters at a time. I think he just put his foot in his mouth but would have preferred to have been left alone to begin with.
The only unanswered question is whether Tomase had a source (concerning the Rams' walkthrough) or did he just make it up to add to the drama.
