Hey,
I'm 35 years old, and I grew up playing the "old school" game systems (Nintendo 64, etc).
But I have little experience with the new systems.

I'm buying this for my 7 1/2-year-old and 5-year-old sons.

Should I go with Wii, XBox 360, or PS3?

I'm leaning towards the Wii.

What's your advice?

As far as the kids go I can't speak to that, but if you want a little dad enjoyment the PS3 has a nice bluray player.

Get them a wii. Its perfect for their age, with many of the games you've probably been playing all your life. mario kart, Mario Galaxy, Legend of Zelda, Smash bros, etc. These are all great games and games they'll enjoy.

Also, it's the cheapest of the systems so thats a major plus as well.

Buy them a PS3 and keep it at your house. They can play with it when they come to visit you. I did the same thing for my cousins. They live about 1500 miles away though and I bought it for them for xmas. By the time they visit for the first time I'll have a PS4

My first thought is to go with a Wii. You don't want young kids messing with an expensive console like the PS3. On the other hand, if MS really does drop the Arcade 360 down to $199 come September 7th?

I'd go with that. Plenty cheap, but great graphics and mature games for you, but some kid games too, and plenty of cheap ones on the Xbox Live Marketplace. You can pick up some of the backwards compatible Xbox games really cheap too.

the wii would probably be the best bet for that age range. even though i still think the wii is a little gimmicky, they probably wouldn't even notice. a few games to try out, like citizen said, are mario galaxy, legend of zelda, smash brothers brawl, mario kart, i think there might be a mario party for wii as well. and of course...the wii sports is always a hit, and they're coming out with a part 2 of that early next year when they release the wiimote v2 (which will have more accurate motion controls)

the 360 (right now) has the better games/online content, but that stuff is usually for older gamers. the ps3 has the better hardware, but as of now doesn't have a whole lot in the gaming department *imo* but it doesn't matter...the wii has the better "kiddy/casual" games

Without question its a wii. Its the perfect system for kids. Dont have one myself but a couple friends with youngsters do and they love it.

For that age group it's the Wii without a doubt. Good games, and VERY VERY VERY few with any content issues for you to worry about at all. You have to try hard to find an inappropriate for kids game.

Good thought.
However, I'll be playing this too sometimes.
And it's something they'll be using for 4-5 years I hope, so I don't mind investing in *new* stuff to get a longer shelf-life (not to mention more fun along the way).

Wii and 360 if you must. Got about 4 years left till the next set of systems.

Wii is great though, I have one and love it.

I think the obvious choice is wii. You said yourself you like playing old school games, well the wii has the virtual console, in which you can download games from NES, SNES, N64, sega. For the kids, there is a lot of games they'll enjoy, like carnival games and mario party, and a bunch of others that are fun, and easy to play for kids.
