WASHINGTON -- When Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as the first Democratic House speaker in 12 years, she promised to reach across the aisle to Republicans, to be "speaker of the House -- the entire House." In tribute to that spirit, she dressed in purple -- blending the red and blue that are symbols of partisan division.

But she did not look like a speaker of the whole House this week, as the financial industry bailout she helped negotiate was unexpectedly defeated. Republicans deserted in droves, Democrats were split, and Pelosi ended the floor debate before the vote with a passionate critique of Republican economic policies.

She needs to go away. There's liberals and then there's San Francisco liberals. She's a San Francisco liberal that's out of touch with the rest of the country just like her city.

Pelosi conducted herself very poorly in making that speech, but she got a majority of her majority party to vote for it. It isn't her fault it failed. The Republicans killed it, whether or not they want to believe it.

House Members Voting 'Yes' On Bailout Received 54% More Money from Banks And Securities Firms Than Members Voting 'No'

Dems voting 'Yes' received twice as much as Dems voting 'No'

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives today voted against a $700 billion financial system bailout. MAPLight.org has found that, over the past five years, banks and securities firms gave an average of $231,877 in campaign contributions to each Representative voting in favor of the bailout, compared with an average of $150,982 to each Representative voting against the bailout--54 percent more money given to those who voted Yes. 205 Representatives voted Yes and 228 voted No, with 1 Not Voting.

House Democrats split their votes on this bill, 140 voting Yes and 95 voting No. Democrats voting Yes received an average of $212,700 each, about twice as much as those voting No, $107,993.

House Republicans also split their votes on this bill, 65 voting Yes and 133 voting No (and 1 not voting). Republicans voting Yes received an average of $273,181 each, 50% more than those voting No, $181,688.

“Profit-driven companies wouldn't be making campaign contributions if it didn't buy them influence or access," said Daniel Newman, MAPLight.org's executive director. “Votes in Congress align with the river of money that flows through our political system.”

95 Dems voted no.
133 Reps voted no.

Not exactly just the GOP killing this bill is it?

What's sick it that those that voted yes for this bailout/power grap. Received more money from the banks. Not our interests at heart. I'm glad this bill failed. It was a good thing for America. For once the people won.

You know what, i do think it was a crappy bill. Just a way to socialize and give welfare to the wealthy. BUT, to claim that Pelosi's speech was the reason the republicans voted it down...what a joke!!! Let me get this straight, they were going to vote for it, then she hurt their feelings, so they voted against it? ROTFLOL!!! What about the good of the nation? Kill the bailout because it sucks, not because these grown men got their feelings hurt! Poor little republicans. Remember, sticks and stones.... lol lol lol lar lar lar (laughing at republicans!)
