THREE SURGERIES AND COUNTING FOR BRADY INFECTION (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/10/23/three-surgeries-and-counting-for-brady-infection/)

Posted by Mike Florio on October 23, 2008, 8:28 a.m.
After we posted an item earlier this week regarding the potential consequences of an infection (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/10/21/bradys-infection-could-have-serious-consequences/) in the vicinity of a freshly-installed ACL, some accused us of sensationalizing the story of a surgery aimed at cleaning out Tom Brady’s surgically-repaired knee.
Even if we were (and we don’t think we were), the story has just gotten a lot more sensational.
Brady has had a total of three surgeries to deal with the infection in his knee.
One procedure was performed on October 15 to “clean and test the wound.” In the eight days since then, two more similar procedures have been performed.
Per the Boston Herald, doctors fear that the patellar tendon graft used to replace Brady’y ACL “is in danger of becoming compromised (http://bostonherald.com/sports/football/patriots/view/2008_10_23_Brady_suffers_setback:_Infection_leads_to_2_more_procedures/).” If that happens, then the current ACL would have to be removed, and a new ACL would have to be installed.
That’s precisely what happened to lacrosse star John Grant, when an infection in his elbow traveled to a four-year-old replacement ACL and required doctors to remove it. Grant will have to wait a total of four-to-12 months before a new ACL can be installed.
And so that’s why we remarked that Brady’s 2009 season (and, possibly, 2010) could be jeopardized. If the current ACL comes out, doctors will want to wait until the infection is completely gone before even considering whether to put a new one in. Even if the new ACL is installed in January, Brady will miss all of the offseason workouts, and could be hard-pressed to be ready for training camp.
Meanwhile, Brady reportedly is receiving antibiotics via IV, and will continue to do so for a total of six weeks.
Look, we regard these guys to be Supermen because of what we see them do on the field. But it sure sounds to us like Brady is dealing with a very serious health condition right now, and we hope that the doctors get the thing under control.http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/

Even though he is in our division, I admit the League is better with Brady playing. Afterall, what any fan wants to see is the best players in the universe playing. Hope he recovers so we can beat the best.

I don't feel sorry for them in the very slightest bit.

Imagine how Joey Porter feels. The Steelers were one of those teams that the Pats managed to squeak by to get some of their hardware.

The Tuna is probably all teary-eyed about Mr. Kraft's and his former protege's woes. :D

It sure is.. as also evidenced by the possible career-ending injury to his teammate, Rodney Harrison who's generally acknowledged by his fellow players as the dirtiest player in the league. Metaphysically speaking, what you put out there is sooner or later gonna boomerang back in some form or other. Is Belicheat next??

This isn't nice. It isn't his fault he got drafted by that horrible franchise.

I'd much rather our 'team of the future' steamroller a strong Patriots side, with Brady at full health than have to rely on opposition injury to be the better team. Nobody should be celebrating this news. The Dolphins have to get better, not hope that other teams get inadvertently worse.

Hope he gets better soon and we see him on the field in '09.

I'm with you. I believe the rule is "worry about your own team first". I hate the Pats as much as anyone on these boards (the proof of that is in the holes in my living room wall, the shoe marks on my door and a good chunk of the damage to my furniture over the last decade), but unless I'm joking I never root for injuries and I never revel in an opponent's misfortunes in health.

As long as he can walk again I feel OK.

He's rich, set for life and has kids with a gorgeous actress and a super model. He can retire right now and he already has 4 times as many rings as Danny does. I don't feel the very slightest bit bad for him.

It's not about feeling sorry for anyone. The NFL losing its best players is never a good thing regardless of who they play for.

Florio is sensationalizing again. The 2nd procedure TB is having is nothing more than injecting fluid in the knee to make sure there isn't any infection left in there and they will keep injecting till they feel its all gone. The procedure is more proactive than reactive. The surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache who operated on the knee is one of the best in the world at this procedure. This is essentially the same procedure Rivers had done in the offseason.

I'll tell you what - it's much nicer knowing Brady ain't there when playing the Patsies! I couldn't give a rats you know what how he got hurt or how long he is out as long as his replacement isn't as good it gives Miami a better chance to win. You think My Dirty Harrison cares if he hurts someone when he is hitting a guy after he is down on every play! I don't feel bad for a second for the Pats. Mr. Brady got very cocky last year during their streak and they didn't think twice about kicking teams when they were blowing them out. I hope the league pays them back big time for what Belicheat tried to do! It bit him in the SB and I hope it keeps coming back to haunt him how classless he is.

He is being taught a simple lesson:

Watch where you crap on the way up because you don't know where you will end up on the way down.

I didn't particularly think it was cool the other night when the Patriots were up 34-7 and still throwing the ball late in the game. They scored to make it 41-7 and the camera panned to Bellicheck on the sideline just laughing it up. Anyone else see this?

I wish him a speedy recovery because regardless who he plays for, no one deserves that.

Maybe it is Karma on the Patriots but that aint Tom's fault. It's a shame if this is how it ends for one of the best ever.

I'm sure there were plenty of Pats fans who wanted the best for Ronnie Brown, there are plenty of Pats fans outside Boston, just like you're outside South Florida. Don't judge everyone by your own, bottom rung standards.

True but in that case, rat on Bellicheck, Brady wasn't even in the game so don't sing and dance on his grave.

The Pats are undoubtedly class-less but for me, celebrating something like this happening is the ultimate act of disrespect and lack of class.

That's really too bad. I wanted to see the final result of Parcells Dolphins beat the Pats while the Pats are 100%. Instead we Phins fans will have to hear Pats fans blame our victory (and future wins) on their star QB being out. To be honest, winning against the Pats is great, but seeing Brady hit the dirt during a victory is the best. I, for one, wish him a speedy recovery just so our D can knock the crap out of him.

IM A DIE HARD DOLPHIN FAN AND TOM BRADY BEING HURT REALLY HELPS THE DOLPHINS CHANCES NEXT YEAR.I DONT WANT 2 SEE ANY BODY BADLY HURT UNLESS IT IS REALLY GONNA HELP THE FINS.
IF SOME 1 TOLD U THAT U CAN HIT A BUTTON AND THAT WOULD MAKE TOM BRADY MISS NEXT YEAR AND THE DOLPHINS WIN THE SUPER BOWL THAN IM SURE EVERY 1 HERE WOULD HIT THAT BUTTON.

I THINK I MIGHT BE THE ONLY PERSON THAT KNOWS THIS AND IM SURPRISED THIS NEWS ISNT EVERY WHERE, BUT TOM BRADY WAS LINKED 2 BARRY BONDS TRAINER WHO WAS FEEDING EVERY 1 STEROIDS.THERE WAS NO SPECULATION ABOUT BRADY TAKING THEM BUT IT WAS STATED THAT BRADY AND THE STEROID DEALER WERE FRIENDS.
I SAW TOM BRADYS SCOUTING REPORT COMING OUT OF COLLEGE AND HIS BIGGEST NEGATIVE WAS HE WAS REALLY SKINNY.EVERY SINGLE SCOUT SAID THAT THEY WERE SCARED OF BRADYS SKINNY FRAME AND THEY THOUGHT HE WOULD GET KILLED IN THE NFL.NEXT THING U KNOW BRADY IS HANGING OUT WITH THE STEROID DEALER AND MAGICLY HE PUTS ON 10 POUNDS OF MUSCLE AND HE IS THE MVP OF THE SUPER BOWL.IS IT ME OR IS THAT SHADY. HIS ONLY NEGATIVE COMING OUT OF COLLEGE CAN BE FIXED WITH SOME (HGH) STEROIDS . HE HAD A GREAT ARM , GOOD SIZE, IF THE SCOUTS FELT LIKE HE WAS GONNA GROW INTO HIS FRAME THAN HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DRAFTED A LOT SOONER.U DONT LET A STRONG ARM, TALL QB SLIDE THAT MUCH UNLESS U REALLY FEEL HE COULDNT GAIN THE SIZE HE NEEDED.AND THATS WHAT THE SCOUTS FELT.

Pure, unadulterated speculation on your part. Completely unfair to judge someone based on your own entirely made up formula. I don't care how 'die hard' you are, wishing injury on anyone in this league is classless and undefendable.

And that's a ridiculous thing to say about the button. I want this team to win the superbowl based on being the best team. I want to win it with skill and class, not relying on other teams' or players' misfortunes.

Don't embarrass the franchise you root for and it's fans with that crap. Why would you want that? To forever have an asterik with your season? If your team can't beat another because of one player, sorry that guy is so damned talented, but to enjoy seeing guys get hurt if it is "really gonna help the Fins" is disgusting.

Well, if he isn't back next year then this excuse is crap.

Their fans can say all they want about us beating them because they don't have Brady. Well, after they have an offseason knowing he won't be there, they should be able to prepare.

You can't just go around saying 'you only beat us because such and such player isn't here anymore.'

If you have a whole year, your team better have a replacement. If they don't, sorry, that excuse is crap and we're the better team.

That's like us saying 'You only beat us so much over the last 8 years because we don't have Dan Marino here.'

I'm not sure which is correct. Though I think when it comes to a HOF Qb in his prime the Patriots would be cautious. They haven't been with everybody though, allegedly. Carson Palmer had his surgery for a similar injury after a playoff game. I really doubt Brady misses games next season. It's fun to speculate and assume though.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache who performed the surgical knee repair on Brady is one of the best in the field, specializing in sports medicine, shoulder, elbow, and knees. So the Patriots should be upset Brady chose this surgeon,.. why?
Surgical infections in knee surgey are rare unfortunately they can and do occur and are the primary concern in any surgical procedure. It seems these days every hack with a word processor has made it their personal objective to try and dig up dirt on the NE patriots orginization. Accusations were made and the Patriots org responded directly to those accusations. I just don't see any smoking gun here.
