View Full Version : Do Angels Exist?

This time of year, angels are among us in a big way. You could say it's their high season. They play a starring role on just about every Christmas tree. A magnificent example at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art is filled with Neapolitan figures from the 18th century.

Angels are often seen with flowing robes, like the ones at the Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, California. Others wear little more than wings (as in Victoria's Secret's version).

But what exactly are angels, anyway? And are they real?

The Bible says they do.

Here's a few things about angels:

There are an immeasurable number of angels.

Revelation 5:11 (New International Version)

11Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.

Angels are not to be worshipped.

Colossians 2:18 (New International Version)

18Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind puffs him up with idle notions.

Angels are not immortal, but they are very ancient.

1 Timothy 6:15-16 (New International Version)
15which God will bring about in his own timeóGod, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

Angels are not omniscient.

1 Peter 1:12 (New International Version)

12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Matthew 24:36 (New International Version)

36"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[a (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%2024:36;&version=31;#fen-NIV-23991a)] but only the Father.

The angels do not marry, nor have children.

Matthew 22:30 (New International Version)

30At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

One important thing to remember:

Angels are subtle beings, reject fanciful stories, and especially stories were angels add doctrine.
