View Full Version : Opinion of an open-ended ending

What are everyone's thoughts of open-ended endings for either a movie or television series? I recently saw a movie with an open-ended ending and at first, as I always am, I was disappointed, but after a while where I started to think about it more, I started to appreciate more and the idea in general of that type of ending. What do you guys think?

Developing an ending is one of, if not the hardest part of writing anything. There are some creative ways of using an open ending (the book ending of Stephen King's The Mist, for example), but usually I just find it a little worse than the deus ex machina.

It depends on what you mean by open ending. If you mean an ending with a clear set of outcomes, but which we are not told which outcome occurs, I would find that cheap. But an ending where nothing is resolved at all I like. It is more realistic.

I can take them or leave them. It all depends on how it's delivered.

100% dependent on the movie. if its to create hype for a nonsense sequel than i hate it. but if its american psycho - then its a diferent story.

I agree that it is a choice that can be positive or negative. On the one hand, it can enhance the story line by leaving a little imagination to the audience or letting the ideas or philosophical questions behind it to percolate (Blade Runner comes to mind). Then again, it is usually done for producers to squeeze out an unnecessary sequel if the movie is successful at the BO.

Would Swordfish be in that category?

I liked the ending of Fabulous Baker Boys (One of my favorites). Open ended and perfect, I thought.
