The Florida Marlins kickoff their spring training today against the St. Louis Cardinals. Last year we saw a 13 game turnaround from our boys, and I think they will do even better this year. Who knows? They might even shock the world again and bring home a third world series title. Whatever happens this year, it should be another fun season. Go Fish!

Seems like they only win the WS on odd numbered years, and every 6 years.

So...this would be it.

we do win every 6 years it seems... So maybe..
However with the recent spending sprees of the Nats and Braves, i think they'lll improve, and the Philsand Mets are always contenders..

This is the least confident I've been for the Marlins in a few years..
I think our pitching staff will be better, but i think we'll be last in the Division...
here's to hoping..

Are you kidding??? This should be the most confident you've been in years. Just cuz the Nats got Scott olsen and Adam Dunn and the Braves got Derek Lowe, doesn't mean they got better than the Marlins. We're pretty much even with the Mets and Phillies. Remember, had Kevin Gregg not lead the league in blown saves last year we could have made the playoffs. This year...NO KEVIN GREGG! :D

Marlins feature new lineup with same bad defense in spring training opener

The first four batters in the order, including John Baker (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/entertainment/john-baker-PECLB000310.topic) in the two-hole and Jorge Cantu at cleanup, all had hits. That did not lessen Larry Beinfest's disdain with the gloves.

The President of Baseball Operations, Beinfest is not one to wear emotions on his sleeve in front of reporters. Yet almost immediately after ambling up to manager Fredi Gonzalez's post-game media gathering he made his disgust over the four-error game (it should have been five) known.

"More runs than errors, we'll take it as a positive," said Beinfest, who did not maintain a facetious tone for long. "We've talked about it a lot. This team is going to take pride in its defense. It's the first day, but this team needs to play better defense. It's not the way you want to start. We want to set the tone right away."

I'd like to see them finish in first place for once. I know they've won the World Series both times they've won the Wild Card, so you're probably thinking of it as some supersticious thing, but I want the division. Best durnig the regular season and best in the postseason.

The difference was the bullpen. Namely the closer. Theirs went perfect, ours lead the majors in blown saves.

it should be a very close 4 team race with us, the Mets, the Phils, and the Braves and here's why...

1.The Mets are still filled with question marks in the rotation outside of Johan Santana. John Maine is coming off injuries, Pelfrey put together half a season, Livan is Livan, and Ollie Perez is inconsistent as well. Also, while their BP is better with K-Rod and Putz on the backend, the rest of the BP is kind of shaky.

2.The Braves are gonna rely on a lot on Derrick Lowe and Javier Vazquez; neither of whom have been the most consistent pitchers over the last few years. Plus, they are relying on an enigmatic outfield.

3.After Cole HAmmels, the Phillies rotation is full of question marks. Brett Meyers can never put a full season together, Jaime Moyer is another year older, Joe Blanton is a good inning eater but not much else, and Chan Ho Park hasn't been relevant in years.

4.Don't even worry about the Nats, even with us trading them Olson (whose nothing special), they have no pitching.

Now here are my thoughts on the Marlins...
1.Emilio Bonafacio beating Gaby Sanchez out on the roster was the best thing for defense. Jorge Cantu is decent and 1st, but was atrocious at 3rd (combining that with Hanley not always concentrating, and Uggla being a poor defensive 2nd basemen and that's a reason our defense was poor)

2.Good thing we kept Cameron Maybin in the minors for another year. He wasn't ready last year, but he is now. Having him in Center with Ross and Hermida on the corners is the best outfield we can have until Mike Stanton is ready.

3.The BP is a lot better IMO as a whole. Gregg was not a good closer, and while Lindstrom may or may not be good, adding Meyer, Calero, Nunez, and Penn to Lind and Pinto really helps. Once Proctor is ready, the BP should be a strength.

4.Dan Uggla won't be a Marlin much longer. Love the guy, but his defense is atrocious, and Chris Coughlin is about ready.

5.The Rotation could be great if JJ and Ani return to form from their rookie years after the injuries, and Volstad builds off of a decent rookie campaign. If MIller also improves a lot (he wasn't ready last year) it's just icing on the cake.

oh and I forgot...

6.Adding Russ Gload and Ronny Paulino to the bench really helps. Paulino is a very good back-up catcher that can also hit so between him and Baker we should have some production from the position after the Black Hole known as Treanor-Rebalo. Gload can also play so many different positions. Those 2 with Wes Helms, and a healthy Fredo give us a good bench as well

AMAZING way to start the season.
Bonaficio played his heart out for the fans. I dont understand how he made that into an inside the park HR. Soo fast, he even made that ridiculous diving grab. Lets see how he keeps it up. I'm LOVING his .800 BA right now.

I also can't believe ESPN is hyping up our pitching staff as the best in the league, or NL, they said one of the two. I've heard that from two guys now.
I might want to retract my first post in the thread, the one that says we'll finish last in the division. I think this first game, my friends and ESPN has convinced me, we're gonna be pretty damn good.

Josh Johnson's night is officially over.

6 2/3 innings. 7 hits. 0 ER. 0 walks.

Very effective game by Johnson. He looked like he was getting a feel for the umpire's strikezone early in the game nibbling on corners. Greg Maddux made his living doing this. If you were going to beat Maddux, you had to do it in the early innings. I'm not saying Johnson is the second coming lol, but the way he approached his game tonight was very Maddux, Glavine-esque. I was highly impressed. Hopefully Johnson can repeat this kind of performance throughoutthe season.

You know, for the first time in quite a few years, our farm system is very strong with people who aren't just pitchers. I was shocked to see we had 3 people in the preseason top 20 prospects on Baseball America (Cameron Maybin, Mike Stanton, Logan Morrison). Stanton will be a flat out stud, and I really don't know a lot about Morrison, but he could be up real soon (I believe Cantu is a FA). We also have Matt Dominquez at 64 (Future stud at 3B), Kyle Skipworth at 85 (led the GCL in throwing out base runners), and Sean West at 96 (one of the pitchers we took in Volstad's class who many think could be better than Volstad if he can overcome his blister problems).

If either Ani or Volstad can become a solid number 3 behind JJ and RiNo IMO we'll win the NL East. If all 4 can be good to great all year, we'll be dominant. No more Rick Vanden Hurk,Mark Hendrickson,Sergio Mitre, Brian Moehler, or Burke Bradenhop starting this year.

Hanley is the face of the franchise. I couldn't see the Marlins parting with him. If our pitching staff turns out as advertised, I would do everything to keep them together. Especially Nolasco, Johnson, and Volstad. If Bonifacio keeps going at the rate he's going, he's going to be a keeper. I love Uggla and Cantu, but Uggla's defense is absymal (see today's game) and with some of the talent down in the minor leagues I could see the team letting them walk or dealing them. That being said, these are probably the most exciting times for a Marlins fan. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Uggla ain't going nowhere this year, especially if they're still contending at the trade deadline. Gaby was basically given the first base job and he stunk it up in spring training. If anything, Uggla will be traded in the offseason.

Josh Johnson is a true workhouse, he's got great stuff and a heavy fastball. I'm loving our young starting rotation, just have to get th ebullpen figured out now.

How bizarre was it when the Mets hit the ball along the third base line and the security guy had a brain fart and attempted to get the ball? I was like...wait, did he just do that? And then he casually flips the ball to Carroll, that was quite the scene.

the bullpen was good last night, Atlanta's however definitely is not good I don't see why foxsports just wrote an article about the Braves being big contenders. They haven't faced good pitching before us and now look how much they are scoring. they went from 5 or 6 runs per game to 5 runs in two games. and we had Miller on the mound thats the only reason they scored those 4 runs, lets see Sanchez finish them off now

you have to love what Dan Uggla is doing, he used to be such a swing hard and either hit a HR or strike out kinda guy, now he is just going for singles with men in scoring position and he is driving them in leading the league in RBIs right now then we have Bonifaco who I believe is still leading the league in runs scored. We just need more production from Ross and Maybin, Hermida could also do a little more hitting. But I just love what John Baker is doing very nice job in the #2 spot. 1-5 hitters might be the best in the division, after that we have little production so far.

Well, It's pretty obvious they celebrated 4/20 before the game today.

miller is not the answer as the 5th pitcher i think it is safe to say that we need to trade for a lefty or call up vandenhurk to be the 5th

i take it back miller did ok, logan kensing needs to get send down you allow 4 runs in 1 1/3 inning that is uncalled for, miller allowed 4 runs in 4 innings, at least it wasn't 5 like jj did in one inning even though we came back

at least we did not strikeout as much today, unreal that they could not hit that pitcher who is that guy

i gotta pin this loss on freddie for not taking out kensing when he did, and for our line up not being to hit whats his face. we need a new hitting coach, conine should be the hitting coach how awesome would that be

Our bullpen has been overworked so he had no choice but to stick with Kensing. Also, Conine as hitting coach??? Are you celebrating 4/20 too? :ricky:

Yea they threw him on the DL, said he has been struggling with an oblique injury. He usually throws up to 93 mph . . . and he topped out at 87 mph. Whether he pitched or somebody else . . . we had 2 hits and zero runs . . . . we werent winning this game.

It will probably be Vandenhurk. Not that I have a whole lot of faith in him either, but I'm not going to trust Andrew Miller for a good while.

If by "Miller wasn't too bad" you mean he only lasted a crappy 4 2/3 innings, was wild, let runners run on him like crazy, and totally sucked ***... you're right, he wasn't too bad.

Don't worry, they'll win the season series over the Phillies again this year, too.

Only because the Phillies party on South Beach and get swept every time they go to Florida.

Seems like it happens alot. Same thing happened to Russ Ortiz in 2006, then Lincecum took his place..the rest was history.

Not saying Badenhop is Lincecum, but he can't do any worse than Miller.

Look at brian moehler of the astros, he had 2 horrible starts and then was put on the dl.

we just struggle against the Pirates for some reason. Although Ohlendorf and Karstens have been decent since being traded to the Pirates.

Miller, injured or not, needs to go to the minors. He's not ready to be a major league starter.

So there's no chance his bad play was b/c of injury?
