The Lions have begun negotiations with the No. 1 overall pick to be, but the prospect's identity hasn't been revealed yet.
Unlike the Raiders two Aprils ago, the Lions plan to get the player signed before the draft. They probably are talking with several players (Matt Stafford, Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, and maybe Aaron Curry) and will choose whomever takes the smallest deal. If the pick is Stafford, he can expect a contract bigger than Matt Ryan's $72 million pact from last year.

As you have read by now the Lions are already negotiating with their number 1 pick. Well knowing who these guys pick could affect the draft. I think if they dont pick Stafford and pick Smith, Curry or Monroe. It will cause a free fall similiar to how to lasy year draft when Ryan was not picked. Certain players will be available to us when we picked that wouldn't in other circumstances.

There is alot of talent in this draft and I think Miami could wind up with a player that we did not expect to be there. I also think with the 25th selection we are in perfect position.

I think they'll pick Jason Smith. The one thing we ALL learned last year, is that it starts up front with the big boys. Plus, I don't believe the Lions are truly sold on Stafford.

Think Stafford should be the choice as they could get a good LT later in the draft in William Beatty or Eben Britton.

I think it would make more sense for the Lions to trade down....they can get Mark Sanchez later on as their QB, and I think he is just as good as Stafford.....there is no dominant QB in this year's draft so the Lions should trade down for more picks....they also wouldn't have to spend $70+ million on Stafford.

I really do not see how who they pick will have any effect on us. If WR's go on a big run unlike last year that will have the biggest effect. I don't see it happening because why would teams shy away from selecting a WR in the first round last year but jump all over them this year. There will be another big run on OT's once again and maybe Mack/Freeman could surprise with someone selecting them early.

I think we're in great shape anyway it ends up, if there is a run of WR's it will push the CB's and OLB's to us. You could spin that any way if OLB's go fast then a CB or WR will be there. I just hope some great player falls to our 44th pick to give us two excellent picks.

KFFL has learned the Detroit Lions (http://www.kffl.com/team/16/nfl) will take Baylor OT Jason Smith (http://www.kffl.com/player/21148/nfl) with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft (http://www.kffl.com/link/159).

Smart choice if true. Maybe they go the Cleveland Browns / Miami Dolphins route of OT first and QB second, they still have the 20th pick. I think Jason Smith / Josh Freeman is better than a Matt Stafford / Eben Britton (or William Beatty) draft. The safest pick is still Aaron Curry

Well Freeman is receiving similiar comparison to Culpepper, but with a brain. Linehan is the Lions new OC I think so you might have a point CJGOCANES

We did the same by taking Long then Henne, instead of Ryan and....

This seems to be a formula that could work best, remember when the Chargers took Tomlinson then Brees?

Having Jason Smith and Gosder Cherilus as book ends should help them out alot and Backus should be a very good guard also. I think they have a nice start.
