So, I havent had the opportunity to see much Iowa football aside from highlights etc. but had heard a little about OLB A.J. Edds and ILB Pat Angerer.

After watching the Orange Bowl, I'm now VERY interested in seeing one, or even both (!), come to Miami.

What do you think of them? Do you see or know of any weaknesses they may have that I'm missing?

The motors, speed and instints I've seen from these two guys has really impressed me.

Edds is a decent size at 6'4'' 244lbs and seems to do a decent job in coverage as well.

Angerer, to me, would be the "re-birth" of Zach Thomas! He's only 6'1'' 235lbs but man can he get to the ball carrier from the middle of the field. I realise he had a great D-line in front of him which kept him somewhat clean, but regardless, this guy is a football player and one I think we should target in the 3rd or 4th round in April.

Any thoughts?

my thoughts are angerer made a ton of plays yesterday and he should have...he was unimpeded due to the iowa dline just owning the ga tech oline

i'm gonna see how he does shedding blocks and sifting thru trash before i say what my thoughts are on him

edds is a very good cover lb...he was draped on his man in coverage last night

haven't reviewed too much tape of them yet but i plan on it

I thought Edds did very well covering his guy last night too.

hooshoops, when you get around to looking at that tape would you mind letting us know what you thought? I'd be really interested to know.

Thanks!

Edds reminds me of a Brian Cushing except not as violent. Gifted cover guy, VERY big and strong. Needs to work on dealing with blockers. Doesn't attack them or deliver the blow. Doesn't avoid them well, either.

For instance, Brandon Spikes attacks blockers. He slams them up and by doing so, he decides where the running back goes instead of allowing the running back to decide. Very valuable skill in a defense like ours.

On the other end of the spectrum, Navorro Bowman is a bit smaller, really very quick, and he has a superb ability to avoid blockers while still getting to where he needs to go. He just uses his quickness to beat the lineman to a spot, a quick hand move, and voila he's beyond the block.

Edds doesn't really do either, yet. But, that's not surprising because of the job description of the position he plays in Iowa's defense. He's a very smart guy, the professor of the defense, and he's a hard worker with natural talent. I believe he could get to where we need him, but he won't be there right away. He would have to be situational to start out here in Miami.

who do you see as logical STRONG possibility type of OLB and ILBs for this team?

Right now I see Norwood as a ILB with a strong shot of being a Fin come May and I like Graham a lot as well as a SOLB.

What are your thoughts on both of em' as well

I like Graham but I don't know that the front office will appreciate his lack of height.

As for Norwood on the interior, I don't know. Boomer's got a great point on this one. He's not good against the run at all so why would he suddenly be good against the run on the interior?

On the inside I think you have Spikes, McClain, Edds, possibly Sean Weatherspoon, possibly O'Brien Schofield although you might think about keeping him at 3-4 OLB...same with Dexter Davis...Von Miller...all guys you probably want to keep outside.

Edds seems to be getting a lot of recognition of late...
Isn't Weatherspoon small? or I have the wrong guy in mind. You think McClain falls out of hte top 10?

No way McClain falls out of the top 10.

I liked Mizzou's Weatherspoon last season, but kinda gone off him a little bit. He didnt show much in the Bowl game against Navy.

What are your thoughts on Mike Johnson out of North Alabama? He's probably going to go undrafted unless he has a good Senior Bowl week and good combine. But something about the guy I like. He is a two time D II All-American and won the defensive player of the year in 2009.

He's 6'4", 250lbs and should run in the 4.6-4.7 range. He's a former RB, and those usually translate to good LBs because they understand seeing the holes open up and can attack.

I like this guy a lot from what I have read and clips I have seen on him. I think he could be a real diamond in the rough as a late round pick or UFA.

I think the ease of success the Iowa backers had was in large part due to a dominating performance by the DL. Dont know if any were seniors.. but something to keep an eye on. They owned the interior of the GT OL.

Edds is very good in coverage and CK's comparison to Brian Cusing read my mind

I posted yesterday in another thread that I wouldnt be shocked to see us go McClain-Edds back to back if we got things shored up on Offense via FA...

angerer had 130 some tackles. is a first team all american. theres not a whole lot to dislike about his game. He's 6"1' and I would think he can pack on a few more lbs, maybe get close to the 250 range. so that may be a drawback for parcells. seems he wants his backers a bit bigger, and the 15lbs or so may be pushing it for pat. but that would bring him more in line with our current LB group.

well, I live in iowa so I tape every game. gives me something to do during the week.

this way I can not only watch film on the hawks, can also break down a lot of the big ten.

I had a lot of tape on shonn greene last year. wasn't happy at all to see the jets land him.

same with greenway when the vikes took him one spot ahead of us when he came out.

youtube is a good way to go though.
