View Full Version : Biggest Draft Risks

My three biggest draft risks this year.

Terrance Cody (Alabama) -- He can be outright dominant at times, but he has all the red flags of a draft bust - poor work ethic, overweight etc. Not too many 365 pounders have had success in this league. Ted Washington certainly tipped the scales around 350 and Vince Wilfork is probably close to that, but I can't think of too many more. Will Cody get in shape or eat himself out of the league?

Brandon Lafell (LSU) -- There's a lot to like about Lafell. At 6-3 he has good size, he is a nice downfield blocker (team player) and has been productive in the very competitive SEC. But, he doesn't have good hands. In so many ways Lafell reminds me of Derek Hagan, an ultra-productive college receiver without the primary skill set (hands) the position demands.

Arrelious Benn (Illinois) -- Benn will be over-drafted based on nice measurables. I'm 50-50 on him. With a good, patient coaching staff he could be a player. I don't know what his work ethic is like, but that's a factor as well. In Benn I definitely see his talent, but I don't like that he's a body catcher. That makes me question his hands, although that was also the knock on Jerry Rice.

Those are the three I'd stay away from on draft day. Just my opinion.

I can see only three DT drafted ahead of Cody: Suh, Dan Williams, and Gerald MCCoy. All four will go in the first round.

I would be surprised if any of them fall to us. Maybe Lafell but that's if the Tuna will let Ireland use a pick or not.

I'll take Benn in the second in a heartbeat. Earliest I would draft the others would be 3rd for Cody and 4th for Lafell.

you put benn with a real QB and his stats would be sick in college he had a QB that was a 57% comp passer and only 9 times in his whole career he completed 60% or more

i think Greg Hardy and Taylor Mays have bigger bust potential than Benn or LaFell.

Please stay clear of LaFell. Benn >>>>>>>> Lafell.

Taylor Mays should be #1 on that list. Add Ricky Sapp from Clemson to that list for me.

Greg Hardy in terms of talent is a great player but with everything off-field he could be a bust in those terms. Not talent issues but attitude and lifestyle could hurt Hardy's career

I'd put Carlos Dunlap up there. A lot of talent, but only showed up for half a season

Mays will be good IMO as long as you know what you are getting. He's not Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu, but he could be Adrian Wilson. Plus, Mays is a film room junkie

if cody can control his weight he'll be a hell of a player. but that's a big if - enough to drop him out of round 1.

lafell has huge bust potential for me. he needs some serious work running routes. guys like him are the reason people say receivers take 3 years to develop - he'll need every bit of that - and that's why i want the dolphins to have nothing to do with him.

benn ... not a chance. he's my favorite receiver of this weak class. people may think i'm insane but i like him even more than bryant. great hands, great routes, great speed. no question marks there for me.

That's a good point. He obviously didn't have the coaching at Illinois either. Has some things to work out, but yes the ability is there.

I forgot about Hardy. He could be the Quinton Moses of this draft, falling to 3rd round. The Ronnie Lott comparisons with Taylor Mays no longer seem close to legitimate, but he could be similar to Louis Oliver. I'd take that at the right spot.

Terrence Cody?? Third round? Remember how far Gabe Watson fell. He was considered a top 20 pick through most of the draft process. I think Cody will end up in the 2nd round.

Isn't the knock on Benn being his hands, couldn't that also have something to do with the QB's rating?
